1 Program Goals Mission With the goal of improving the quality of healthcare, the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical and Dental Education activities are offered to enhance the skills and knowledge of physicians, dentists, and other healthcare professionals at the local, state, regional and national levels. Course Objectives Attendees will leave this conference with the basics of cardiology and pulmonary information as well as knowledge of the most recent advances in the field. At the conclusion of this program, the participants should be able to change their method of care by using gained knowledge to Recognize symptomatic aortic stenosis presenting as angina in the elderly and determine appropriate use of stress perfusion Identify high-risk patients to screen for abdominal aortic aneurysm Appraise the symptoms of claudication and refer patients with peripheral vascular disease for appropriate intervention and treatment Evaluate latest findings and new treatments for hypertension Select lipid-lowering strategies in at-risk patients based on race and gender groups Visit online and register: Call: (865) Continuing Medical Education Credits Accreditation The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Here are the grim statistics: Tennessee ranks sixth highest in mortality from diseases of the heart. Additionally, lung disease is the third leading cause of death of Americans, and in Tennessee each year, respiratory diseases account for 5.5% of the deaths, the fourth leading cause. New strategies and treatment options are coming to light every day. 5 Program Agenda Friday, October 3, :00-8:30 a.m. Registration and Continental Breakfast Visit Exhibits 8:30-8:45 a.m. Opening Remarks Course Director and Moderator Stuart Bresee, M.D. Conference Pre-Test 8:45-9:15 a.m. Healthcare Reform: A Political Reality David Hall, M.B.A. Both of the major party presidential candidates have prioritized healthcare reform. Mr. Hall will present the key components of each candidate s plans and provide his assessment of post-election change in the healthcare industry. 9:15-10:00 a.m. The Approach for the Patient with Painful Legs Tjuan Overly, M.D. Dr. Overly will use a case-based presentation to outline the evaluation and management of the patient with leg pain, including clues in the history that help distinguish claudication from neuropathy, arthritis, and spinal stenosis. He will also discuss the use of ABIs and segmental pressures in helping to decide whom should be referred for angiography and possible intervention. Interventional options for patients with arterial insufficiency, including newer alternative endovascular techniques, will be presented. 10:00-10:20 a.m. Break and Visit Exhibits 10:20-11:05 a.m. Breakout Sessions: 1. Robotically Assisted Cardiac Surgery Jeffrey Everett, M.D. Robotically assisted cardiac surgery achieves superior results with less morbidity. This combination can impact the accepted indications for several procedures, including valve repair, allowing earlier intervention. Dr. Everett will describe advances in this field and how they have benefited patients at UT. 2. Incidental Solitary Pulmonary Nodule Paul Branca, M.D. Dr. Branca will present a case-based update on the approach to the patient with solitary nodules with specific guidelines on which presentations to refer for fine needle biopsy, transbronchial biopsy, or wedge resection and which can be followed with PET and serial CTs. 3. Clinical EKG Review Rubinder Ruby, M.D. Dr. Ruby will review common EKG patterns in arrhythmia, ischemia, and metabolic abnormalities and present clinical pearls for their recognition. 11:05-11:50 a.m. Atrial Fibrillation: A Longstanding Persistent Problem James Cox, M.D., and Thomas Gaines, M.D. Name changes, CHADS2 scoring, advances in therapy: What the primary care provider needs to know to be up to date. Dr. Gaines will outline the Mini-Maze procedure and explain our results using it at UT Medical Center. 11:50 a.m.-12:35 p.m. Lunch and Visit Exhibits Friday Afternoon Session Moderator: James W. Cox, M.D. 12:35-1:20 p.m. The Recognition and Management of Aortic Valve Disease Bret A. Rogers, M.D. Aortic valve disease is common, frequently overlooked in the elderly, and often accompanies vascular disease, severely complicating its management. Dr. Rogers will present current concepts of pathogenesis, recognition, evaluation and management of aortic stenosis and regurgitation as well as other aortic valve conditions. 1:20-2:05 p.m. Hypertension Management as part of Total Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Thomas Giles, M.D. Hypertension is a major public health issue and common primary care problem. Dr. Giles will discuss the latest findings and recommendations for treatment as well as new therapies. 2:05-2:25 p.m. Break and Last Opportunity to Visit Exhibits

6 Program Agenda (continued) 2:25-3:10 p.m. Breakout Sessions: 1. High Altitude and Dive Medicine Bruce B. Ludwig, M.D. Dr. Ludwig will discuss common questions regarding fitness to dive and outline recommendations for pre-dive physical screening. He will review essential points in the diagnosis and treatment of decompression illness. Additionally, he will outline the recognition, management and prevention of acute mountain sickness and high altitude pulmonary edema. 2. CT Coronary Angiography Dale Wortham, M.D. CT coronary angiography study is here. Which patients should have this study versus myocardial perfusion imaging or conventional angiography as an initial study? Dr. Wortham will outline how to use this technology now to make cardiac diagnoses and to plan therapy. 3. The Cardiac Physical Examination Gayathri Baljepally, M.D. Even in today s world of high tech evaluations, the cardiac physical examination can have great value in providing real-time information literally at your fingertips. Dr. Baljepally will present information useful to the primary care provider in methods of determining the severity of left ventricular dysfunction, valvular lesions, and restrictive or obstructive cardiomyopathies. 3:10-3:55 p.m. The Management of Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms Scott Stevens, M.D. What is the best assessment tool for descending thoracic aneurysms? Is it an appropriate screening test for high risk individuals? Once an abnormality is identified, how often should the study be repeated in follow-up? At what diameter should the patient be referred for surgery or endovascular repair? Dr. Stevens will answer these questions and describe the state of the art for aortic interventions and the planned Aortic Center at the UT Medical Center. 3:55 p.m. Adjournment Saturday, October 4, :00-8:20 a.m. Registration and Continental Breakfast 8:20-8:30 a.m. Opening Remarks Dale Wortham, M.D. 8:30-9:15 a.m. Coronary Heart Disease and the Millennial Woman Nanette Wenger, M.D. This presentation reviews gender differences in the clinical presentations and outcomes of coronary heart disease. 9:15-10:00 a.m. State of the Art in COPD Management James E. Shamiyeh, M.D., M.S.P.H. Dr. Shamiyeh will discuss the latest advances in pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapy for COPD with particular emphasis on the role of hyperinflation in the disease pathophysiology. He will also discuss interventions that may have the potential to alter the natural history of this progressive chronic disease. 10:00-10:15 Break 10:15-11:00 a.m. The Management of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Oscar Grandas, M.D. Which patients should have ultrasound assessment for AAA? Is it an appropriate screening test for high risk individuals? Once an abnormality is identified, how often should the study be repeated in follow-up? At what diameter should the patient be referred for surgery or endovascular repair? Dr. Grandas will answer these questions and describe the state of the art for aortic interventions. 11:00-11:45 a.m. Management of Lipid Disorders in 2008 Stuart Bresee, M.D. The results of recent cholesterol trials can guide us to improve patient management.
