Wolstein Research Building Case Western Reserve University Cleveland, Ohio Presented by Neurological Institute University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
3 A Global Conference of Neurocritical Care and Music Introduction Neurocritical care has evolved over the past twenty years in parallel with the growth of critical care medicine and the stunning developments in the fields of neurology and neurosurgery. Advances in imaging and a better understanding of pathophysiology of neuronal injury have revolutionized the management of an acute stroke patient in the last decade. Today the Neurological Intensive Care Unit is the epicenter for acute stroke intervention and the care of complex, critically ill patients with neurological disease. The multidisciplinary approach of the NICU brings experts in all specialties shoulder to shoulder at the bedside and it is no different in the educational setting. For the Neurocritical Care and Stroke Conference and the Bioinformatics Workshop you have the option of participating on-site or via the internet.
4 8 th Annual Cleveland Neurocritical Care & Stroke Conference Objectives After attending this program participants will be able to: Apply the new definition of stroke that incorporates brain imaging in order to best plan for treatment. Utilize CT angiograph / CT perfusion, Diffusion Weighted MR Imaging and Perfusion Weighted MR Imaging. Recognize how Diffusion / Perfusion MRI Imaging can be used to treat patients in whom the exact onset of stroke is not clear. Identify the spectrum of hypercoaguability syndromes, when to order the work up and when not to and how to interpret the results. Identify the risks and benefits of each carotid endarectomy and carotid stenting and how to select the best procedure for a specific patient. Understand the natural history of patients with malignant MCA territory stroke, how to optimally manage patients medically, and which patients and when to perform decompressive craniectomy. Review the natural history of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, how to optimally manage patients medically, and which patients and when to perform surgical evacuation. Recognize the benefits of hypothermia, how to initiate this approach and the pitfalls to avoid. Approach patients with severe strokes and know what factors determine prognosis. Identify ramifications of DNR orders and the interactions between physician perceptions of outcome and outcome. Continuing Education The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education to physicians. Neurocritical Care and Stroke Conference: The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Bioinformatics; Transcranial Doppler; Music & Medicine: The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine designates each educational activity for a maximum of 4 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. W h o S h o u l d Attend This symposium is designed for neurointensivists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, critical care physicians, internists, anethesiologists and emergency medicine physicians. Nurses and other allied health professionals may also find this education of value.
