6 Objectives Our educational objectives are to discuss the most recent research in the field of nutrition support. All our topics are knowledge-based with the following objectives: List criteria that support the indication for parenteral nutrition in acute pancreatitis Discuss how parenteral nutrition could negatively influence outcomes from acute pancreatitis and list approaches that could mitigate that risk Initiate and manage parenteral nutrition in patients with acute pancreatitis Discuss principles of shared decision-making and challenges to achieving this. Describe how palliative care and hospice are different and how each may be applied to seriously ill patients. Interpret preferences regarding survival, quality of life, and costs to patients in determining optimal patient-centered outcomes, and predict educational efforts and practice changes needed to maximize this in nutritional support. Provide brief background on fats and oils in diet Discuss history of development and use of IV lipid emulsions Describe IV lipid emulsion compositions Compare and contrast properties of IV lipid emulsions Review current literature & guidelines regarding alternative IV lipid emulsions Define Enterocutaneous and Enteroatomspheric fistulas. Know the principles of fistula closure. Describe a team approach in the care of these patients. Compare and contrast Smoflipid with Soy Based Lipid emulsions Describe the use of lipid emulsions in parenteral nutrition Discuss the role of Smoflipid in current &future parenteral nutrition practices Analyze clinical cases for potential ethical challenges that are present or may present Relate basic ethical principles to specific case examples encountered. Determine appropriate resources needed to approach challenging cases Identify the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) criteria of coverage for parenteral nutrition therapy: diagnoses and length of therapy Recognize impact of third party reimbursement of parenteral nutrition Understand the ethical dilemmas to maximize coverage and minimize consumer s financial responsibility The opportunity to interact with the experts is offered as part of the break-out sessions in the afternoon.
