3 3 Welcome Message Dear SIOG Colleagues and Friends, Following the great success of the 2013 SIOG Annual Conference in Copenhagen, it is our pleasure to welcome you this time in Lisbon for the 14th Annual Conference of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology. This year's conference celebrates its mission by bringing together multidisciplinary experts in cancer and aging via its annual conference theme, "Bringing Two Worlds Together: Oncology and Geriatrics." The 2014 Programme Committee, Track Leaders and Portuguese experts in the field have been working tirelessly to put together this year s sessions. The focus of these sessions intends to bridge the gap of best practices between geriatrics and oncology featuring multidisciplinary sessions on hard tumours, haem malignancies, new therapies, geriatric assessment, supportive care needs and an educational forum dedicated to nurses. To illustrate this approach, this year s Partnership Session promotes the new SIOG collaboration with the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS) involved in the planning of this conference and in the development of other SIOG educational on-going projects. The SIOG meeting also includes special sessions in collaboration with industry to present the latest therapeutic data and their application to the older adults. SIOG is also dedicated to the development of new research, of nursing and allied health practice knowledge and of junior faculty with the scheduling of new abstract based award sessions. Planning this meeting has called for year-long dedication from SIOG members who volunteered for leadership positions. They have given selflessly of their time in order to advance the field of geriatric oncology and to share their findings with you. For this we are very grateful. But ultimately the success of this gathering rests with you, your presence, your expertise, your ideas, and your participation. We look forward to exchanging knowledge and best practice with you here in Lisbon! We hope you will enjoy this moment together. Best wishes, Dr. Vesa Kataja Chair, Scientific Programme Dr. Arti Hurria President Dr. Francisco Pimentel SIOG 2014 Scientific Liaison
