2 What is the Walk for Water? The goal of our Walk for Water is to raise awareness and make an impact in the global water crisis, while putting us into the shoes of those who experience walking for water daily. This non-competitive, educational walk is being held on August 4, Halfway through the walk, participants will fill their buckets with water along the route to simulate the true burden of life in a developing country. We encourage everyone to participate in Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church s Walk for Water. Sponsorship Opportunities Sponsors are one of the most essential elements of the Walk for Water. Our sponsors provide support in the form of financial contributions and in-kind donations of goods or services. Sponsors will gain a high degree of visibility with event attendees, and in the community. Sponsorship also provides outstanding marketing and public relations opportunities. In addition, your sponsorship is a charitable donation that is tax deductible. These children in Dundu, Uganda, fetched contaminated water from a small stream prior to receiving safe water. They live in one of the first communities to receive the liquid hope that businesses and residents joined together to provide through a Walk for Water in another community. We look forward to the new stories of safe water and sanitation that will come from our Walk for Water!

3 About Water Missions International: Their Mission to Address the Crisis Water Missions International (WMI) is a Christian engineering non-profit organization founded in 2001 with a mission to provide sustainable safe water solutions in developing countries and disaster areas. By designing and implementing sustainable, low-cost safe water and sanitation technologies, WMI has brought relief and hope to more than 2 million people across the globe. Water Missions International serves as a responsible steward of all donations. For the sixth consecutive year, Water Missions International was awarded Charity Navigator s coveted 4-star rating for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances. This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Water Missions International from its peers and demonstrates to the public that it is worthy of their trust. The Global Water Crisis 884 million people lack access to clean drinking water; that s almost 3X the United States population. (WHO/UNICEF) At least 2.6 billion people, about 41 percent of the global population, do not have access to latrines or any sort of basic sanitation facilities. (UN WATER) 1.8 million children die every year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. This amounts to around 5000 deaths a day, one every 20 seconds. (UNDP) An American taking a five-minute shower uses more water than the average person in a developing country uses for an entire day. (UNDP) 443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related diseases. (UNDP) The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives through disease than war claims through guns. 4 The Impact of Water Missions International Your Donations Put to Work Thank you for helping the people of Lataka, Kenya! Their Story: Just shy of Kenya s north border to Ethiopia and about 150 miles east of Lake Turkana, the Borana people of Lataka were challenged daily by their water supply, or lack thereof. The community s sole water source is a small water pan, which is essentially a man-made pond created by a dam. The small pond struggled to provide for the needs of 3,000 people and their livestock and often dried up. When water was available, it was murky, contaminated with waste, and filled with worms. Water is life in Africa, and the people of Lataka had no choice but to drink and wash with this water. The physical reality of this water source was bad, but the ramifications for the people of Lataka were far worse: a lack of time, health, resources, and dignity to start. The people of Lataka commissioned their own Living Water Treatment System. In addition, WMI installed a sedimentation tank, a solar-powered pumping system, two 10,000 Liter water storage tanks, and two community tap stands. With the equipment also came months of relationship building with the community, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) training sessions, and an ongoing partnership with a local pastor and his church. Community development workers for Water Missions International have led numerous ministry outreach efforts following the installation of the system. Today looks a lot brighter and healthier for the people of Lataka thanks to a successful safe water project implementation by Water Missions International through the support of generous investors like you!
