Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement Paws Trifecta: Kids+Autism+Dogs Our mission is to bring Autism Service Dogs and related services, including community outreach and education, service dog awareness, informational training and social skills classes, to children who demonstrate autism spectrum behaviors. Our vision is for all children on the autism spectrum and for those with spectrum behaviors to have access to specifically trained autism service and/or therapy dogs to assist with their peer interaction and improve social integration in their schools and communities. Background Statement Our Co-Founders bring more than 53 years of experience working in various forms of businesses. Our President has over 26 years of Business, Marketing and Consulting experience. Terri has experience teaching elementary and special education in the urban schools. Our Vice President has over 25 years of direct customer interaction as well as experience working in a group home environment with disabled people. As parents of an Autistic child, our Co-Founders are able to use their personal experiences, and extensive autism and behavioral training to help others cope with many of the issues related to the acceptance of those afflicted with Autism in the community. Impact Statement Accomplishments in 2015: Canine Assisted Social Skills In Education (CASSIE): Served 40 individuals and four groups at Ozanam. Community Outreach and Education: 10 luncheon speakers, 3 corporate diversity inservice, 12 support groups. Raising PAWS: Expanded training program. EVERYTHING IS PAWSABLE TRAINING CENTER AND DOG PARK: The EIP Training Center will be a community-based service dog training and autism awareness center. Paws 4 Autism will use the facility as a physical location to provide daytime obedience training for service dogs, as well as provide an opportunity for youth and young adults on the autism behavior spectrum to take part in hands-on training. This will increase the number of service dogs that Paws 4 Autism can provide, allow more families to foster our puppies in training, and provide an opportunity for youth and young adult volunteers to learn valuable life skills and work on social skills. PAWSabilities Resource Center: Goal is to secure a permanent location for training & social skills groups. Puppy Partners/Raising PAWS: Currently we have ten donated puppies in training. 3 Needs Statement Capital funding for Training Center & Dog Park ($800,000) Strategic sponsors and partners for events ($100-$20,000) Donation of funds for vehicle to transport large service dogs Minivan or SUV preferred. ($20,000) Donation of funds/product for dog food, supplements, Training equipment ($100 - $5000) Donation of funds to cover training and seminars for volunteers CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement The CDC reports that autism effects 1:68 children. Recent international studies report that the frequency can be as high as 1:32. Autism is a debilitating disorder for children and devastating for the families that care for them. The average cost to treat an individual with autism averages $60,000 per year. There is no known cause. There is no cure. There is no standard protocol of treatment. Every child is unique in their diagnosis, symptoms and effective therapies. Paws 4 Autism has been serving children with autism and their families since July Service dogs and animal therapy is not a cure-all for those on the spectrum. Service dogs do however provide the child and their families with an effective tool to not only learn to control their behavior and participate in the community, but also be kept safe from dangers they do not perceive. We are currently 100% volunteer driven and most administrative costs are donated in-kind. We will remain volunteer until all current programs are fully funded. We look forward to the challenges ahead as we continue to help give area families the tools they need to work with autism on a daily basis. 4 Programs Programs Community Outreach and Education Description Paws 4 Autism staff and volunteer speakers are available to present assistance dog demonstrations for meetings and events throughout the region. A presentation can be done with or without a dog and can educate your guests about autism service dogs, disability awareness, assistance dogs and assistance dog etiquette. In addition, a Paws 4 Autism staff member will demonstrate some of the over 50 commands autism service dogs learn during their training. In addition to our availability to present as guest speakers, staff and volunteers will help raise awareness and the need for autism service dogs in our community by having a greater public presence of our dogs in training. Category Animal-Related, General/Other Animal-Related, General/Other Population Served People/Families with People of Developmental Disabilities,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Participants in our education and outreach seminars will leave with a greater understanding of what autism is and how service dogs can assist the children and families with whom they work. The use of autism service dogs in the treatment of spectrum disorders has been used for over five years, but is a relatively new concept here in the KC Metro. Our community education and outreach program will increase community awareness and understanding of the need for and benefits of autism service dogs for children with spectrum behaviors. Participants will be requested to complete both a pre- and post-seminar survey to compare their perceptions on autism and autism service dogs. 80% or greater will leave with a more comprehensive understanding of the needs of autistic children. Mishel, a mother of a child with Asperger s, found out about autism service dogs and their benefits through a support group meeting where we presented. She and her son are now in a training group for getting their own autism service dog. Her son used to have meltdowns multiple times a day. He is down to 2-3 meltdowns per week and does not yet have a fulltime service dog. 4
Canine Assisted Social Skills In Education (CASSIE) Program Description Service Dogs for Classroom/Facility - These specially trained ADA compliant service animals are paired with autism specialists and/or special education teachers who specialize in working with children who have emotional or developmental disabilities. Children with spectrum behaviors have a multitude of issues that they must cope with on a daily basis. Many are overwhelmed with sensory input, do not know how to interact appropriately with peers or authority figures, are easily frustrated and overwhelmed due to their lack of communication skills. Empathy, moral conscience, respect and appropriate peer interactions are difficult at best to teach in a structured environment. Through the Paws 4 Autism Canine Assisted Social Skills In Education Program, service teams will work with the children on a one-to-one basis and/or in small group settings to focus on the skills needed to improve their ability to function appropriately in the school and community environments. Category Animal-Related, General/Other Animal-Related, General/Other Population Served People/Families with People of Developmental Disabilities, K-12 (5-19 years), Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Clients participating in the CASSIE Program will: practice teaching the animal something new; engage in play with the animal and other types of appropriate interactions; learn about and practice care, grooming and feeding of the animal; learn other information about the animal (breed, history, etc.); reminisce about the animal or past animals; remember and repeat information about the animal to others; take the animal for a supervised walk; receive and give appropriate affection and acceptance with the animal; discuss how animals may feel in certain situations; learn gentle ways to handle animals; follow a sequence of instructions with the animal; observe and discuss the animal's response to human behavior; interpret animal behavior as it happens; and generalize animal behavior to human circumstances. Clients completing the CASSIE Program will have an increased ability to: socialize and communicate with family and peers; improve memory and recall; improve concentration and attention, and increase engagement; decrease manipulative behaviors; appropriately express feelings; reduce general anxiety; reduce abusive behavior; trust others; and demonstrate appropriate touch. 5
Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Through coordination with the Special Education Coordinators, Autism Specialists and the IEP team, individualized Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) based curriculum will be created for each child who has been recommended for the Paws 4 Autism's Canine Assisted Social Skills In Education Program by district staff. The curricula and results will be tracked using the ReThink Autism Webbased Autism Treatment Platform ( Full reporting and data will be available to evaluate the progress of each student and the program as a whole. Due to the nature of the reporting and tracking program, reports can be accessed at any time (ie: when needed for an IEP meeting) or during the periodic program review. The ReThink Autism website is fully secured and safeguards are in place to preserve confidentiality of students. CASSIE has grown to service 32 individuals metrowide as well as two groups from Ozanam. We have over 100 on our waiting list who wish to participate. Our group classes at Ozanam are going so well that their Day Program staff would like to bring us in as well. As of February, they are searching for funding. Parents report that many of the skills learned by their children are also being transferred to everyday situations. Families are able to participate in the community more that they did before we began therapy. Puppy Partners Description Category Through our Puppy Partners Program, local families in our CASSIE program are able to truly become a part of the training process and earn sweat equity towards the cost of their own service dog. They get to train and live with several different dogs throughout their tenure in the program and gain the experience and confidence of becoming basic trainers themselves. This also ensures the best match for both the family and the dog. Mental Health, Substance Abuse Programs, General/other Animal- Assisted Therapy Population Served Children Only (5-14 years),, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success By the end of one year in the program, 80% of youth in the program will have the skills needed to socialize in neuro-typical social outings. 90% of the youth in the program will have acquired the training experience to be able to accomplish basic obedience of a service dog in training. For youth completing the program, 80% will have increased social and communication skills. 75% of the youth completing the program will have attained mastery of dog training skills that can be applied to a profession in dog services. Success will be monitored by both testing of the youth skills in a online assessment. Success of the skills our participants have trained their puppy will be measured by the ACI standard Public Access test. Youth in our Puppy Partners Program have reported that they feel more at ease in the community when working with their autism service dog in training. Max states, "I used to hate going out because people would stare at me. Now, I can go shopping and people are actually happy to see me!". 6
Everything is PAWSable Training and Resource Center Description Category The EIP Training Center will be a community-based service dog training and autism awareness center. Mental Health, Substance Abuse Programs, General/other Animal- Assisted Therapy Population Served Other Health/Disability,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success The PAWSabilities Resource Center will find donated or low cost space that will accomodate both social skills groups and dog training facilities.collaborative agreements with other agencies will be fullfilled. Ultimately the PAWSabilities Resource Center will be a hub and satellite office for both autism charities, support groups, and dog trainers. 90% of participants in PAWS programs will return for advanced training and job skills. Program Success will be monitored by participation in programs as well as pre and post therapy self/parent evaluations. An example of program success would be a child who enters through our CASSIE program, acquires the skills and confidence to continue through both our Puppy Partners and Job Skills Training program. The highest success will be those who go into business for themselves or are hired as staff by Paws4Autism after successful completion. 7
Train the Trainers Program Description Category Our continued commitment to serve youth in the autism community drives this organization to provide every opportunity to foster and encourage each participant and volunteer to help increase autism awareness and support for the community at large. Autistic youth are not afforded the same advantages that non-challenged youth in the community enjoy. Many will leave the educational system with little more than basic life skills. This program, if sustained, will expand the social and work skills of this demographic. The Train the Trainers Program will allow youth who have been diagnosed as falling within the autism spectrum to attain more comprehensive skill sets, while helping to train autism service dogs for youth in an expanded regional area at a reduced cost while also providing the opportunity to learn both job and social skills, thus increasing their long term employability. Program Goals: Teach autistic youth employable job and social skills that are more readily acceptable to the general public ; Attain a greater capacity to train autism service dogs for youth in our service area; An increased connection to the community through expanded fostering opportunities. Philanthropy, Voluntarism & Grantmaking, General/Other Fundraising Population Served K-12 (5-19 years),, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success We hope to increase the number of families that we assist from our current 18 to at least 30 by the end of In 2015 our goal is to assist at least 50 families. As a result of this program, families will be able to raise the funds needed for their individual autism service dog. 60% of those who begin the process will raise their complete amount in 12 months. Success is monitored by the amount and frequency of donations each family receives. We have helped eight families raise their complete funds through this program at no out of pocket cost to Paws4Autism. CEO Comments We will continue to be 100% volunteer until ALL our current programs are fully funded! We have a wonderful resource and very talented, and dedicated professionals whose passion is to help those youth on the upper end of the autism spectrum. It is these youth who are typically left with minimal resources to help them improve their social and communication skills so that they can overcome their challenges and work towards becoming contributing members of society. 8
