2 Thank you for your interest in sponsoring the Department of Medicine Dancing with the Docs 2015, a fundraiser in support of our Transplant Victory Fund. Money raised this year will help establish a Research Chair in Advanced Stem Cell Therapies. Pa ents at The O awa Hospital have access to more transplants for a wider set of illnesses than most countries in the world. At The O awa Hospital innova on and experimental marrow transplants bring hope and health to pa ents with a variety of blood cancers and immune disorders. The O awa Blood and Marrow Transplant Program performs about 150 transplants a year (each one taking months to complete), and treats about 25 out of province pa ents every year. Why Fund a Research Chair? Innova ve stem cell therapy is already being done with great success at The O awa Hospital without a primary researcher dedicated to leading the clinical research in this area. However, huge poten al exists under the guidance of a research chair to oversee the clinical applica on of new and novel techniques and treatments for fatal blood cancers and immune diseases. With recent faculty addi ons and research developments, we are perfectly poised to take our research to the next level right now!

3 In O awa, for pa ents with life threatening autoimmune disorders we have successfully developed an approach to eliminate the immune systems that are a acking the pa ents. With a blood cell transplant we then restart the pa ent s immune system with stem cells that are purified, with the hope that the regenerated immune system will not become self-destruc ve again. We are basically star ng the pa ent up with an immune system of a baby. Transplant-based therapies are already used for some of the world s most devasta ng diseases including blood cancers, severe autoimmune diseases, and certain inherited diseases of children. Other innova ve treatments are being developed for mul ple sclerosis, heart a ack vic ms, pulmonary hypertension, sepsis, and other cri cal illnesses. Tina Ceroni had a rare disease called s ff person syndrome, a neuro-muscular disease with an autoimmune component. It was life-threatening. Tina underwent a bone marrow stem cell transplant and has been symptom free for three years. Before the transplant, I had no hope for a future. Now I have a future of hope. I was given a gi.
