2 Welcome President Euan welcomed members, guests and in particular, guest speaker Samuel Drown. Apologies for non-attendance received from Graham Perrin, Pat Brown, Peter Poulton, Peter Bodimeade Gail Casey, Di Clements, Di Hagger, and Nilam Samy s Announcements President Euan Nilam s son is currently attending the RYPEN program at Woodhouse Pamphlets promoting the National Youth Science Forum [NYSF]. These will be distributed to local schools. The other announcements were listed in last week s bulletin. Happy Dollars were collected Guest Speaker: President Euan introduced guest speaker Samuel Drowns. National Youth Science Forum 2016 Session C Samuel Drown Sponsored by Norwood Rotary Club District 9520 Post Session Report Student Number: Quite simply the National Youth Science Forum opened my eyes to a completely new world. I have never experienced an atmosphere of such energy, motivation and likeminded people. I am completely confident in saying the two weeks were life changing and attending the Forum would easily be in the top things I have done with my life. Opportunities like this come very rarely and I am so thankful to everybody who was involved in the National Youth Science Forum whether it be Rotary, partners of the forum, the administrative staff involved, the past students or any of the other amazing people who made this experience possible. I first heard of the Forum through one of the science teachers at my high school. Being interested in science, it seemed like an opportunity that I may be interested in. Actually proceeding with the application was a task that I only completed after being personally encouraged by the same science teacher. The next step was getting my application endorsed by a Rotary Club. My local Rotary Club was the Norwood Rotary Club and my gratitude for what this club has done for me is immense. Upon gaining approval from my local Rotary Club, the final stage was to attend the selection day, which involved a speech, an interview and a team exercise. Thankfully I managed to be chosen as one of approximately 30 students out of over 100 who attended the selection day in South Australia. Like many other students I was nervous and apprehensive in the days leading up to the Forum. In my mind I pictured 200 intelligent students and I tried to consider how I was going to fit into this group. As there is so much mystery surrounding the Forum I had very little idea of what I was getting into. From the Forum I hoped to gain further insight into my passions in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Leading up to the National Youth Science Forum I
3 had discovered that I had an interest in Aerospace Engineering. I also hoped that I would be able to meet likeminded students and grow my network of contacts. From the very first minute the National Youth Science Forum was extraordinary. Travelling on a bus for 12 hours with people from across South Australia quickly became a good bonding experience. After just a few hours it felt like I was a part of a small community and by the end of the two weeks this community had expanded exponentially. Making friends and connections at the NYSF seemed almost surreal. Everybody was accommodating of different personalities and while friendship groups formed they were never exclusive and entering into them was never an issue. I now have friends and connections across Australia which is amazing. Hopefully after I conclude school I will be able to continue these friendships and maintain the connections I have made. On the NYSF several speakers and lecturers presented to the group. These were done at individual lectures or at semiformal occasions. From these people I gained insight into how I can go about being successful in the fields of science and engineering. Furthermore their knowledge on ethical issues like climbing the corporate ladder was fascinating and insightful. I also learned a great deal about how I can contribute to society. A variety of topics were presented and I found all of them interesting and relevant. Some lectures that were highlights of the trip included the entrepreneurial session, the speaker at the Rotary dinner and the science in society speeches. The speaker at the Rotary dinner quoted that the average number of days in a person s lifetime is 30,000. This shocked me and has energised me to try and make the most of everyday. The videoconference with a scientist working at CERN- the European organisation responsible for the large hadron collider and many other projects-, was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Hearing such an esteemed scientist talk with us was simply amazing. He was able to answer every question directed at him ranging from topics such as the Multiverse Theory to the greatest scientific discovery in his lifetime. This night will remain with me and it has encouraged me to pursue my studies to the best of my ability and hopefully one day to have a better understanding of the world. During the Forum I attended eight lab visits, all terrific individually. These lab visits were diverse in nature and allowed our group to see several different practical uses of chemistry. Three lab visits really appealed to me. The first of these was going to the Chemistry labs at ANU where we conducted practical experiments and conversed with current Chemistry students in university about their degrees. Observing what a real laboratory is like was a great experience and showed a small example of what university is like. The Deep Space Station was another incredible opportunity and something that captivated my interest. Hearing the input of space exploration on the world and the possible solutions space exploration could hold really inspired me to continue my career path into aerospace engineering and aspire to work in the space field. This visit also assisted me with choosing a topic to research for my high school research project, currently in the SACE curriculum. Finally visiting the microscopy lab at ANU showed a field of science I had never considered before. Observing blood cells with the malaria parasite was fascinating and gave me a greater understanding into how diverse science really is. I would like to thank several groups for their time, effort and dedication in making the 2016 National Youth Science Forum run so perfectly. Firstly, without the sponsorship NYSF receives through Rotary and the financial assistance to students this program would not be possible. Not only do Rotary assist in the financial side of the program but also in the selection process, finding accommodation for students and so much more. The partners of NYSF are another crucial factor to the program s existence. Without the funding and support these organisations provide, the NYSF would not have the monetary means to continue. All of the NYSF past students and staff were amazing and made the experience incredible. Finally to all other parties internal and external to the organisation that made the experience possible, thank you all so much. From the NYSF I learnt a great deal about myself. I feel far more confident in my current career choice, looking towards aerospace engineering. I realised I am interested in the entrepreneurial side of business and I hope to some day gain experience in this field to decide if I wish to pursue it. I was also reminded that there are so many other people who want to make a significant difference in the world, something that is often difficult to observe. The best thing about the program for me was the atmosphere; created by the student staff and welcomed by all the students. Our own community was made
4 within just two weeks, a community that will remain with me for the rest of my life. My current aspirations are to obtain a degree in aerospace engineering with either commerce or science included in a double degree. I m aiming to travel around the world to expose myself to the wonders of life. I wish to put back into the community somehow and a first step towards this may be joining the youth program for Rotary called Rotaract. In the future I hope to work with many of the people I met on the National Youth Science Forum to make our world a brighter place.
