ROTARY EXPO IN MELBOURNE Greeter McBAIN, Bruce Greeter HOGAN, Gerard Reporter DURAS, Peter 8. GALLERY Photographer O'BRIEN, Frank NEXT MEETING GUEST SPEAKER: PETER FRUEH TITLE: CLUB VISION FACILITATION PROGRAM Peter will talk about how the Club Vision program works in preparation for our Club's Strategic Planning day on 26th July Peter became a Rotarian in 2006 and was President of the Rotary Club of Balwyn in and has served two years as an Assistant Governor. In Peter will be District Chair of Community Service. He has completed the RLI program and is a current facilitator for Club Vision within D9800. He has been heavily involved with DIK over the years and with the Eastern Emergency Relief Network and many other project areas. Peter s passion in Rotary is enhancing and being part of high performance teams. This reflects his vocational experience and its application to enhancing Rotarian, Club and District performance in the positive, collegial, volunteer environment that Rotary provides. The Rotary Club Vision Facilitation Program is designed to assist individual Rotary clubs in developing a vision and the genesis of a strategic plan as a foundation for their future progress towards that vision. The Vision Facilitation Program provides independent processes, conducted by trained Rotary vision facilitators that help clubs capture their members ideas and reach agreement on their club s vision and goals. The outcome of a Vision Facilitation process is not one decided by the Rotary District or by Rotary International but is a vision designed and agreed to by the club s own members. While designed to facilitate the identification of a club s vision and key goals, the process has also proven to help transform the collective energy and talents of club members whereby the formation of a cohesive team can be achieved. REPORT IFTAR DINNER 2 JULY 2015 Dinner held in conjunction with the Australian Intercultural Society [AIS] at the AIS Office, 441 St Kilda 1 of 8 4/07/2015 3:42 pm
2 Road from 4.45pm to 7.30 PM Following the success of our inaugural Iftar Dinner, last year, RCCMS again co-hosted a dinner this year with the AIS. While fasting and self discipline are the most recognizable features of the month of Ramadan, hospitality, sharing and charitable works are also intrinsic to the observance of its traditions. So it was that over 60 people including 30 or so Rotarians, partners and family shared a meal at sunset, when Muslims break their day long fast. This time was signaled by a call to prayer by Mustafa Kadioglu, Religion and Values Teacher at Sirius College. This was followed by a toast to Rotary International and the traditional partaking of dates and water. The MC for the evening was Superintendent Charlie Allan, from the Priority Communities Division of Victoria Police, a former Rotary International Peace Fellow. Guests included The Hon Daniel Mulino, Parliamentary Secretary for Treasury and Finance, DG Julie Mason of District 9800, Mr Ahmet Keskin, Executive Director of AIS and President of RCCMS George Mackey, with other community, business and government representatives. A recurrent theme of the night, advanced in the opening remarks of President George and Mr Ahmet Keskin were the commonalities between the Rotary values and the key tenets of Islam, ethics, hospitality and giving. Keynote speaker for the evening was Azmeena Hussain, an Associate at Maurice Blackburn, Vice President of the Muslim Women s Council and external advisor to the Victoria Police Human Rights Advisory Committee. She started the practice of Iftar dinners at Maurice Blackburn in 2010, a practice that has spread from Melbourne to interstate branches. She values Ramadan as an opportunity to detox and for training in self discipline. She also remarked on the strong emphasis on charitable works. Her abiding message was, it is not where we come from that is important, it is what we do when we are here. A reading from the Holy Quran, Ch2 : Ar-Bagara Verses by Mustafa Kadioglu also provided a valuable insight into the theology behind the observance of Ramadan. second keynote speaker for the evening was DG Julie Mason who stated that one of her objectives was for Rotary in D9800 to be more reflective of the communities they serve. She reflected that the school at which she is a principal has 1800 students fro 60 different cultural / language groups. She also spoke of the efforts of the Rotary Club of Flemington, which has sponsored cultural group leaders in their area to join the club. A lighter note was introduced through a video clip highlighting the performances of 60 students from 19 countries at Australia s first International Festival for Language and Culture organized by AIS. A series of reflections from the floor emphasized the value that those attending saw in the night and a willingness for it to continue in future years. Following a series of presentations, the evening concluded with a vote of thanks from Daniel Mulino MP. He remarked that there was a universal enjoyment of sharing food with others and this was a key plank of our multiculturalism. He also reiterated the common values of sharing, charity and tolerance. DONATIONS IN KIND 2 of 8 4/07/2015 3:42 pm
3 Our new President, George Mackey, was quick off the mark when he received an offer from Princes Hill Secondary College of some 144 school desks, to be collected by Rotary with the caveat that they could only be collected during the current school holidays. Frank O'Brien liaised with Margaret Fry, the Assistant School Principal, and Margaret was very happy that the desks would find their way overseas through Donations-in-Kind. Frank, along with Bob Glindemann at DIK, arranged for the DiK Man and A Van to be at the school on Thursday 2 July 2015 at 8.00am. Given the size of the tables, which Peter Duras and Frank inspected (1200L x 600W x 650H), Bob reckoned 2 loads should complete the transfer in the morning. We won t be required to offload at West Footscray as help will be on hand at DIK. Frank was hoping that 6 people would be available at the College to load the desks. Subsequently, Frank, Rob Hines, Peter and Sue Duras, Kevin Walklate, Herb Greenwood and Allan Driver arrived to provide assistance which was gratefully accepted. Margaret Fry visited the hard working volunteers and was very impressed with the effort.the job was completed with a minimum of fuss with all hands on deck in good Rotary spirit. FITZROY CROSSING PROJECT Rotary Club of Central Melbourne - Sunrise Rotary Australia Benevolent Society (RABS) Project number Fitzroy Crossing WA, Indigenous Project Report Date: 30 June 2015 About Fitzroy Crossing About 1,500 people live in Fitzroy Crossing, a tiny country town about five hours east of Broome. Another 2,500 people live in small settlements and camps spread out across the 150-kilometre length of the Fitzroy valley. About 80 per cent of residents are indigenous, mostly from five language groups that have lived on these lands for generations. There is a very high rate of indigenous unemployment in Fitzroy Crossing with only about 200 paying jobs in the community out of a potential workforce of over 800. Background and Objectives of the Project: This project was brought to the attention of Rotary by The CEO Circle and, in particular, one member, Michael Doery. Michael's connection to Fitzroy Crossing was through his daughter who had attended the Yiramalay/Wesley studio school internship in Fitzroy Crossing. As a Chairman of the CEO Circle and member of the Rotary Club of Central Melbourne - Sunrise (RCCMS), Rob Hines acted as the conduit to facilitate this joint project. The objective of this phase of the project was to work with the indigenous people of Fitzroy Crossing to provide a transfer of skills to the men and women of the Fitzroy Valley to enable commercialisation of the existing arts and crafts of the region and to support other commercial ventures. This skills transfer is being facilitated by the Marninwarntikura Women's Resource Centre and the local Men's Shed. Overview of the Project: From June 17 to June 23 a team of 18 volunteers, consisting of Rotarians, CEO Circle members and partners visited Fitzroy Crossing. 3 of 8 4/07/2015 3:42 pm
