3 Dear Friends, As Her Majesty s representative in Nova Scotia, it is my great pleasure to extend greetings for the fourteenth performing season of Nova Voce, Nova Scotia s Provincial Men s Choir. 7 The Nova Voce Board of Directors and I welcome you to our 14th season of bringing music to Nova Scotia. Nova Voce is a varied group with members who come from many parts of the province. We are university professors, students, truck drivers, technicians and doctors, to name a few. We are young and we are old. Though we are diverse, we have a common love of music and we enjoy sharing that love with you through our songs. Our season begins with an evening at Government House in Halifax where the Lieutenant Governor will open his doors to the public as part of Nocturne, an annual evening of celebration of the arts. This will be followed by concerts in metro Halifax, Lower Sackville, Tatamagouche, Fall River and Stellarton. These vibrant communities provide wonderful opportunities for residents to enjoy all the fine culture that our province has to offer. They have hosted such illustrious groups as the National Youth Choir and the Camerata Singers. Speaking of the Camerata Singers, we will be their guests this fall at their concerts of Remembrance. Our annual Christmas concert, with the Halifax Boys Honour Choir, always a rowd favourite, will be returning this year. Our season also includes two fundraising events, where we get to let our hair down and join you in an evening of fun for the family. These fundraisers enable us to travel to all parts of the province and beyond. As you can imagine, sending a group like Nova Voce abroad can be a costly venture -your support helps make that happen. Our love of singing extends beyond the concerts that we bring to you. We also mentor young male singers, provide a scholarship to voice students and support Phoenix Community Choir. This choir is near and dear to our hearts. It is part of Phoenix, a Halifax social agency that has been offering programs and support for homeless and at-risk youth in Halifax for 26 years. On behalf of the Nova Voce Board, I would like to thank our artistic staff which includes Artistic Directors Bryan Crocker and Bill Perrot, as well as accompanist Lynn Pelton. Thanks also to Gina Sanford, our concert manager, and Judy Porter, our publicity manager. We are grateful for their dedication and hard work. Finally, we thank you our audience, advertisers and supporters. You make all of this possible. John Wallace, President A Message from the President 5
8 CONCERT MANAGER - GINA SANFORD Gina is passionate about music, as a soloist, choir member and choral conductor. Travelling and organizing travel for the group is another one of her interests. 15 Charitable Endeavours Nova Voce has sponsored the Phoenix Community Choir for the past three years. They have funded hoodies for new members and sponsored the dinner meals the youth receive each Monday and Wednesday. In addition, Nova Voce provides a Bass (Duncan Miller) and a Tenor (Dick Hodgson) to mentor the young men who sing with Phoenix. Phoenix provides a safe and joyful environment for youths at risk between the ages of 12 and 24. Nova Voce is proud of their relationship with Phoenix and has performed in concert with their Choir with amazing enthusiasm. Charitable Endeavours 13
16 GRAHAM BOLTON - Tenor ll Graham has been singing for as long as he can remember. He went through his school choirs, sang with the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir for three years, the Nova Scotia Youth Choir for four, and is now in his second year with Nova Voce. He is excited not only to sing with the choir this year, but to help behind the scenes through the music committee and board. Fun fact about Graham: he almost single handedly drops the average age of the choir by ten years! 14 Meet a few of our members
17 DUNCAN MILLER - Bass Stay close to your desk and never go to sea and you all could be rulers of the Queen s Navy (which he was after 38 years of lots of time at sea poor Ann!). Duncan took voice lessons in Montreal at age 11 and was promptly put on tour with a vaudeville act. He fell in love with musical theatre and has played all the major patter roles in Gilbert and Sullivan productions in Ottawa and Halifax. He recently soloed KoKo s List song with the Stadacona Navy Band in May. He has performed in many choirs from church to glee. He was the lead singer of a rock band in Montreal and President of Bishop s University s Choir Deep Purples. He has sung in several folk groups and plays banjo and his home made 12 and 6 string guitars. He presently sings with the amazing Phoenix Community Choir, Nova Voce and folk group LPD. He is delighted to sing with NV and the amazing sound an auditioned male voice choir can make. STEVE BEELER Baritone A native Haligonian, it is rumoured that Steve was singing when he exited the womb. His early choral training occurred at his church under the guidance of Bernice Finck and Charles Underwood. Steve has sung in many choirs including Seton Cantata, Dalhousie and Bethany Chorales, and studied voice under Donna Dodge. As a founding member of Nova Voce, he has served on the Board, including as Chair. He also sings in the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo Choir and his church choir. For 29 years, he and his wife have co-produced the Jubilate Singers Festival of Carols at St. Mark s, raising funds for Christmas food boxes. Steve works for Public Services & Procurement Canada where he can be found singing Happy Birthday to his co-workers. Meet a few of our members 15

20 Pleased to support Nova Voce! Congratulations on 14 years of charitable service! Planning ahead for them. Why preplan your own funeral? It s not something most people like to think about, but preplanning is a great benefit to you and your loved ones. Preplanning allows you to choose the type of service you want with your funeral home of preference. It eases the emotional and financial burden placed on your loved ones during their time of grief, and gives them confidence in knowing they are doing exactly as you wished. Everyday, we see families who are overwhelmed trying to figure out what their father, mother or spouse would have wanted for their funeral. A Purple Shield Plan resolves the confusion about what type of arrangements should be made, and what the financial implications of each choice are. It is truly a gift for those you love. Call us today for a free, personal consultation in your own home, or in a location of your choice.
