3 D E C E M B E R I S S U E 2 8 P A G E 3 Kessingland W.I. November is the month in which we hold our annual meeting and elect our officers for the coming year. Margaret Parker agreed to continue as our President, heading a committee with several new members. She awarded the President's Cup to Sandra Warner for the outstanding contribution and effort she puts in to Kessingland WI. Craft and cookery cups are presented members who have entered items. This year muffins and cakes including root vegetables were judged, with Karelyn Smithson entering the winning cake. The Craft Cup entries included lanterns and photographs, with Sue Mickel winning the trophy with her photograph. Additionally, the Bloom of the Month exhibited was from the garden of Karelyn Smithson. Four members walked through the village down to the beach on a circular route, while next month they will be in the Sotterley area. The Darts players will be enjoying friendly matches with local teams and plan to defend their Pairs title in the Spring. Some ladies will go to a performance at the Marina theatre, and the Craft group will be making brooches for Christmas this month. Our December meeting will take the form of a Christmas Celebration, complete with refreshments and entertainment.

Suffolk Photography Competition Calendar Launched in Aid of Deafness Charity The winners of a local photography competition, raising awareness about untreated hearing loss, have been rewarded with their photos being featured in 2018 charity calendar. The Sounds of Suffolk competition was created by family run hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, who have a local clinic within the Rosedale GP Surgery in Carlton Colville. The competition has helped encourage those struggling with hearing loss to seek help, as well as highlighting some of the incredible sounds that can be found in and around our county. During a prize giving presentation organised at the company s headquarters on Upper Brook Street in Ipswich, the calendar was officially unveiled, along with a series of greeting cards which are both to be sold in the run up to Christmas. Competition winner James Stannard and second place runner up Stephen Squirrell attended the presentation, along with Brian Platt and his hearing dog Elton. Karen Finch, The Hearing Care Centre s managing director said We were incredibly touched by how many people entered the competition and told us just how much they would miss their favourite sounds if they couldn t hear. Producing this stunning calendar and beautiful cards will hopefully prolong the message of seeking help if you are struggling with your hearing. All sales from the calendar and cards will be donated to the company s chosen charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Hearing dogs not only help deaf people by alerting them to sounds they would otherwise miss, but they also give a deaf person a newfound sense of independence and confidence with their loyal companion and true friend at their side. The Sounds of Suffolk calendar and greeting cards can be purchased for 4.99 and 3.50 respectively from The Hearing Care Centre s website or by calling
6 P A G E 6 Fire at popular local Restaurant During the early hours of Wednesday 22nd November, fire struck Kessingland s most popular restaurant and caused severe damage to the roof and smoke damage to the Restaurant. Many local people who had booked the restaurant for their Christmas celebrations, woke up on Wednesday morning to hear the sad news. David and Tina Wall would like to express their thanks for the support they have received from the local community, and are working hard to have the restaurant open in the New Year.

10 A Christmas Message from Revd Janet Blessed art thou, O Christmas Christ, that thy cradle was so low that shepherds, poorest and simplest of earthly folk, could yet kneel beside it, This Christmas prayer is a favourite of mine and one that I share with everyone every year and at every possible opportunity. For me it says it all, God loved us so much he sent a part of himself to tell us of that love. Just think how awesome that is; God came into the world as a tiny baby, vulnerable and poor so that we could come to know and love him, just as he loves us. He chose to be with us and he has never left us. But the real miracle of miracles is this - for a brief moment in time frail and failing humanity was able to gaze upon the face of God, and see there not a God of retribution, threat or punishment; but our God of peace who yearns to be loved by everyone who yearns still to be allowed into our hearts to love us and show us a better way to be. God s love and peace is for everyone. Just as no one is excluded from Christmas and everyone is invited to celebrate the wondrous mystery of God with us, no one is excluded from God s love. We are the ones who chose to turn away from God s promise of peace; we are the ones who have the choice to make Christmas about love, peace and a better world for our children or make it just another excuse for an expensive party. The message of Christmas is that God loves us and that he wants us to live in love and peace. That was the message the Babe of Bethlehem brought to us. He came into a world of turmoil and hatred but left it better than he found it an example to us all. As we look around a world much in need of peace and love and celebrate another Christmas and New Year may God s peace and love surround you, and those whom you love, this Advent, Christmas, this New Year and always. Janet The Revd Janet Wyer, Rector of the Kessingland Benefice [ ] Come See the Stable! St Edmund s church has a very special treat for little ones this Advent and Christmastide - we have our very own stable for children to come and play in. Please do come along and have a look. There is also a selection of costumes available so that the children who visit can enjoy dressing up to become a part of the wonderful story of Christmas.
11 Perfect for that very special photograph. The church is open every day between 10.00am and 4.00pm. From December 9 th an In Loving Memory Christmas Tree will be in place at the West end of St Edmund s Church. Please do feel free to bring your own remembrance card to place on the tree or simply use one of those provided. On Christmas Day the cards will be gathered together and offered to God during the 10.45am morning service. Christmas Services All Welcome Sunday 17 th December 3pm - Carol Service Christmas Eve 6pm - Family Crib Service Christmas Eve 11.15pm - Midnight Mass Christmas Day 10.45am - Celebrating Together The Clergy, Lay Minister, Churchwardens and Congregation of Kessingland, St Edmund s Church Wish You All A Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Joyful New Year
