Greetings! A Note from the PTSA President Many thanks to all the parents, teachers, and others who survived our delayed opening, got their students to school, navigated the adjustment to devices, and made it to Back to School Night - the start of a new year can be lots of work! At Back to School Night, we welcomed the news from Friends of Dulaney that AC units should be installed in our non-air-conditioned classrooms in time for the return of hot weather in the spring. We are very interested to hear your feedback about the BCPS devices students are now effectively required to carry. Do they seem like a helpful addition to the educational experience? Have they caused problems for you? What does your student think? We're forming a Devices in Schools Committee. If you'd like to serve on that committee or have feedback to share, please your thoughts to me with "DHS Devices" in the subject line. We're very glad to have new friends involved in our expanding range of PTSA programs and activities, and there's always room for more! Come to our meetings when you can; our next one is Oct. 24th. All monthly DHS PTSA meetings are at 7pm on Wednesdays in the school library. Even if you can't get to the meetings, we have lots of great volunteer opportunities, and starting this month, each newsletter will include an updated list. See page 10! Another way to support the PTSA's work is to use the Dulaney-based services of Elite Driving School and The Answer Class SAT prep service, both of which share their proceeds with us. Here's a link to the next SAT prep classes, which will be at Dulaney in the evenings of October 22 and 24: Dulaney High School SAT401 - The Answer Class Finally, special thanks to those of you who have joined the PTSA and supported its work through your generous donations to Lions Share, our annual fundraising appeal. Our goal this year is to reach a total of $17,000 in Lions Share donations, and we're not there yet, so if you haven't joined and donated yet, please do. Here's the link: Donation Page v3 We wish you all a cool, crisp, beautiful October. Sue Battle-McDonald PTSA President

A Note from the Editor Hello DHS Family, I only have a couple announcements to make. First I want to thank all the parents who have already donated and joined our PTSA. Your support helps us provide funds to many activities within the school that otherwise would not happen. If you haven t donated or joined, please do so. Any amount is welcomed. Please join us clicking here. Secondly, I want to share that this past week I have been training to become a Youth Mental Health First Aid trainer. This course helps everyone that has interactions with young people to recognize signs and symptoms of mental illness. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to me. I will be advertising a class in our area soon. Last but not least, please spread the word about this Newsletter. Some people may not be receiving it and if that is the case they need to correct their with the school office. It is our duty to keep communication open and accessible. As always, we are here to help. Reach out with any questions and concerns you may have. Autumn Cheers! Camila Januario Newsletter Editor camilasjanuario@gmail.com

NHS National Honors Society will be having a Red Cross blood drive in the satellite cafe on Tuesday October 30 from 9AM to 1PM. Students receive two service points for donating blood! Parents may also donate and their child will receive credit for their donation. Choral and Orchestra Concert. Thursday Oct. 25th at 7pm in the auditorium. In honor of Rob Hiaasen, who was one of the victims of the Capital Gazette shooting and the husband of our beloved English teacher Mrs. Hiaasen, we will be offering a concert which celebrates poetry. While most concerts are free, for this concert we will be taking a voluntary $3 admission at the door and all funds collected will go directly to a scholarship managed by the English Dept. to be awarded to a journalism student.

School Counseling Join us for Paying for College Night on Thursday, October 4th, at 7PM in the Satellite Cafeteria to learn all about Financial Aid. To apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study, and loans, you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ) form after October 1st and before March 1, Completing and submitting the FAFSA form is free and easier than ever. Many states and colleges use your FAFSA information to determine your eligibility for state and school aid, and some private financial aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid. Counselors did Naviance/College Application lessons in all 12th grade English classrooms in September. Seniors are prepared to use Naviance to manage their applications and deadlines. On their home page is a step by step guide of the application process. REMINDER: Students must send their own SAT and ACT scores to colleges through the testing web sites. All grade 9, 10 and 11 students will take a PSAT on Wednesday, October 10th. All they have to do to is show up with pencils and a calculator. Upon receiving scores reports in December, encourage your students to link their PSAT/ NMSQT results to Khan Academy to access their SAT practice plans. Your student s score report will have instructions on how to link to Khan Academy. Counselors will be visiting 9th grade classes to introduce ourselves, and to get them thinking about careers and colleges via the 6 year planning process. Up Next: October 17th, 7:00-8:00 PM, in the Dulaney Auditorium: Dr. Karen L. Swartz, a renowned psychiatrist from Johns Hopkins, will be presenting to parents on Adolescent Depression Awareness. Parents and Teachers are encouraged to attend.

Current PTSA Volunteer Opportunities For more information about any of these, contact PTSA Volunteer Coordinator Dawn Stellman or PTSA President Sue Battle-McDonald. 1. Help us form a new "Devices in Schools" committee to follow issues associated with the assigned BCPS devices, and also to consider related issues such as health implications, research relating to device usage for education, and options for limiting cellphone usage during the school day. 2. These committees have chairs who can use help: Beautification - gardening and sprucing up the school grounds Reflections - short-term need for judges, I think in Jan or Feb Hospitality - bring food and other items for, and/or helping at, events at school - mostly for teacher/staff events - great fun to stay and see how happy the free food makes them :) Advocacy - many opportunities depending on your areas of interest Prevention Partners - grant-funded substance abuse prevention activities 3. Serve as Dulaney's liaison to the Maryland PTA and the Baltimore County PTA Council. 4. A number of national organizations offer resources and programs that we would love to bring to Dulaney; we just need volunteers to take the lead. Three examples are below; you may find others that interest you: Help prevent Nature Deficit Disorder! Lead Dulaney in developing green schoolyard spaces. Sandy Hook Promise - to prevent gun violence - Dulaney needs a "Promise Leader" We need a coordinator for Youth Mental Health Matters Week in the spring. This is a great Maryland program, and school coordinators, called "Champions", are needed.

KEY CLUB Key Club is the largest student run organization in the world, and Dulaney's chapter includes almost 200 members who complete thousands of hours of community service every year. Students volunteer at soup kitchens, local elementary and middle schools, senior living communities, nature centers, homeless shelters, and numerous other locations in the Dulaney community. Key Club also hosts annual fundraisers for non-profits such as Children's Miracle Network and the Thirst Project, and us sponsored by the Towson-Timonium Kiwanis Club. For more information, check out our website at dulaneyhighkeyclub.wixsite.com/dulaneyhighkeyclub or feel free to contact our president Alan Zhang at FROM THE NURSE SUITE Parents please send in the completed pink discretionary medication forms (see next pages) that will allow the nurse s office to give your child the discretionary medications during the school day. This form also enables us to reach you in the event of a medical emergency as contact phone numbers are included on the form. Also, if your child needs prescription medication during the school day, we need a doctor order filled out and the medication brought in in its original container with the pharmacy label attached. 14 Student Support Network, Inc E. Joppa Rd, Suite 200 Baltimore, MD The Student Support Network improves the lives of Baltimore County students in poverty by providing food, other basic necessities, and advocacy support. The Student Support Network began as the Loch Raven Network, a holiday project created by Laurie Taylor-Mitchell in December of 2015 to assist students at Loch Raven High School in Baltimore County. A request for 4 volunteers to help 5 students and families, either homeless or in dire need, led to 17 days of donations before the project ended on Dec. 20. In that time, 128 volunteers donated food baskets, hundreds of gifts, winter clothing, sheets and blankets, and over $6000 in monetary donations for 25 families. The Loch Raven Network became a non-profit (501c3) organization in October of The change to the Student Support Network resulted from the growth to programs now operating in three schools: Loch Raven High School, Parkville High School, and Pine Grove Middle School. The Student Support Network receives assistance from local churches, businesses, community groups, foundations, and individual volunteers who have donated funds, inkind donations, and their time to the Network. Contact: Laurie Taylor-Mitchell, Founder and President ltaylormitchell.ssn@gmail.com The Student Support Network is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, tax ID Gifts are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
