1 GFWC Capital Woman s Club Member of General Federation of Women s Clubs JUNE 2017 GFWC is the best organization for women wishing to make a difference! MAY SPEAKER At our meeting, May 15, we had speakers from Meals on Wheels Senior Services South Sound: Stephanie Watrous, Nutrition Coordinator & Meals on Wheels Assessor and Issac Wagnitz, Volunteer Outreach Coordinator. They gave a passionate presentation about their jobs, the organization, the need for volunteers to deliver meals and the need for office and kitchen help at the senior center. Nardine Sandberg, is organizing a tour and lunch at Meal on Wheels' Senior Services Center for our members. She will send out an when details are available. October 2016: Lacey Police Officer Hadley, personal safety; January 2017: Lacey Fire Chief, Steve Brooks, fire safety and CPR training; March 2017: SideWalk organization to end homelessness. Speakers, Kim Pham, SideWalk volunteer and Miguel Pineda, Community Outreach Coordinator; May 2017: Meals on Wheels, senior services. Speakers, Stephanie Watrous, Nutrition Coordinator & Meals on Wheels Assessor and Issac Wagnitz, Volunteer Outreach Coordinator; June 2017: Road Scholars, educational trip organization, speaker, Teresa Wilkin, Road Scholar Ambassador. JUNE MEETING: Looking ahead to this next year... Please let Nardine know if you have suggestions for speakers from a non-profit organization you think we would want to learn about or a speaker on health issues, fun trips, crafts, etc.. She will be lining up speakers starting September 2017 (perhaps Battle Buddies as one). 2 GFWC CAPITAL WOMAN S CLUB SUPPORTS GFWC-WS PRESIDENT TINA BAIR S SPECIAL PROJECT: FISHER HOUSE During the month of May, GFWC Capital clubwomen provided an evening meal for guests at JBLM Fisher House on 3 separate days. A big THANK YOU goes out to them. LEFT: Ellen Wagner and Karen Smith (project coordinator for our club) pose with JBLM Fisher House manager on May 9 as they delivered the first meal which was prepared by Marilee Massari, Rita Edwards and Ellen Wagner. It included an Italian casserole, fresh veggie tray, rolls & butter and two kinds of cake. Menu included meat loaf, scalloped potatoes, green beans, baked beans, fruit salad, brownies and spice cake. May 30 meal was prepared by Nardine, Ellen, and Karen and featured Summer Cilantro Pasta Salad Fresh Fruit Salad, Corn Meal Muffins, Blackberry Honey & Seven Layer Bars. Donations are greatly appreciated and needed year round.

3 GFWC-WS ANNUAL FEDERATION FOREST WORK DAY MAY 13, 2017 Rena spreads bark chips in the interpretive garden bed we have adopted to maintain. Rena & Linda hard at work in the interpretive garden beds. Tina on the right. Total of 27 GFWC WS clubwomen and family members along with park staff worked together & enjoyed a day at our beloved park! Not all are pictured. Our Gail (far right) joins others who assembled info packets for park visitors. Linda and Beth haul bags of bark chips. Lynn, Rena & Linda spreading bark chips. Char with hand up. Her son & 2 grandchildren stopped by after their swim lessons. Passing on love of the park, three generations enjoyed the beauty of the forest! Rain sprinkles didn t stop Rena & Linda from getting their work done.

4 WOMEN S HISTORY: VINTAGE FASHION SHOW Norma, Linda, Karen, Dorothy and Nardine attended the P.EO. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Vintage Fashion Show and Luncheon, May 6 The fashion show was educational and included women's history. Nardine reports it was a wonderful event. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is an international women's organization of about 250,000 members with a primary focus on providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide. The Sisterhood is organized with chapters throughout the United States and Canada, headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa. Norma is a member.

5 GFWC-WS ARTS CONTEST Dorothy Crowder provided information about our state Art Contest and eleven students from Black Hills Secondary Options High School submitted entries. (Dorothy delivers Homeless Backpacks food weekly to the school.) Only 2 students out of 11 were able to make it for the celebration, but the teachers were there. Dorothy made up certificates for all who participated and provided them with snacks and juice. Their art was displayed. Two students won at State Convention: Annalisa Hand won popular and juried vote for 1st place and Jim Blosl won first place popular vote. First time Capital had participants!! Saturday, August 19, :00 am Char s driveway SIDEWALK DONATION: President Marilee presents our $50 check to Miguel Pineda, Community Outreach Coordinator at the Sidewalk office May 22. VP Nardine & Treasurer Ellen accompanied her. Staff welcomed them as they were given a tour of the 1900s house. SideWalk is a local organization on a mission to end homelessness in Thurston County, WA. We combine volunteerism and intensive community engagement with data-driven, evidence-based methods to accomplish our mission.

6 Musings from Marilee Hello Ladies, I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend either out of town or here at home. The weather was so nice and such a treat! It was a nice reward from Mother Nature for slogging through all the months of rain and gloom. Our next meeting will be the final one before summer. I would like you to be thinking about any changes you might like to suggest to the club for changes to or additions to the list of charities our club supports. Maybe a charity you volunteer with. At the State Fall Conference tables will be available for $15 for each club that wants to sell anything of the clubs' choosing as a fundraiser for both state and clubs. We need ideas for something to sell. Get creative. The summer can be used to get ready for it. Please remember to bring groceries to the meeting for the Food Bank and any spare quarters for the quarter tube to support Friendly Waters. We will be having the sign-up sheet for cooking meals for Fisher House during the summer. Unfortunately the need doesn't stop with the change of the season. And if anyone wants to donate anything from their wish list you can bring it to the meeting and we will get it to them. I hope you have been saving things to put in our yard sale this summer. It will be at Charts on Saturday, August 19. Although we have agreed not to sell any clothes unless they are really special, we want you to collect as many clothes as possible because we get paid the most by Value Village for bags of clothes. So we will want you to bring any bags of clothes you have when you bring anything else you are putting into the sale.[ Looking forward to seeing you all at our next meeting.
