1 Beth Shalom Garden Club Newsletter November 2009 Volume 10-2 Letter from the President Many thanks to all the bima and cornucopia designers who have created beautiful arrangements thus far in our bima schedule. The High Holy Days and the festival of Sukkot challenged everyone to do their best to provide beautiful floral, vegetable and fruit arrangements. The beginning of Garden Club is always very busy because of our responsibilities to the Temple, but we receive bountiful rewards by working with gorgeous flowers. The Board hopes that you all enjoyed the Opening Meeting with Lou Greenstein who was extremely entertaining with his demonstrations of clever garnishes and edible centerpieces. The meeting was very well attended and we welcomed four new members to our Club that evening. A special thanks to Penni Jenkins, our Program Chair, and the Hospitality Chair, Sandy Mills, and her committee members Marlene Cohen, Barbara May and Sandy Schneider, for working on this program to make it a success. A special thank you also goes to Sylvia and Marjorie Golden for organizing our October program, It s Party Time. Teams of randomly selected members worked together to plan a table arrangement for a party of their choice. Similar to last year s Guess Who s Coming to Dinner? this team event proved to be fun for all. Photos of the tables are provided in this newsletter. Our thanks to Hospitality Chair Avis Simon and her committee members Beverly Litman, Sharon Mills and Sandy Schneider for providing the October refreshments. Anyone who did not volunteer yet for Hospitality is welcome to provide help and refreshments to any meeting during the year. Please contact Marlene Cohen for specific details. A reminder: The Antique Show will take place on Sunday, November 8 at the Needham High School from 10:00 AM to 4 PM. Set up is on Saturday, November 7. Our programs are very full this year with a 2 nd Needham Art in Bloom, and we need everyone s help to make THE ANTIQUE SHOW, OUR ONLY FUNDRAISER, a success. 2 ART-IN-BLOOM WORKSHOIPS MARISA McCOY WILL PRESENT A TWO-PART WORKSHOP TO HELP EDUCATE AND PREPARE MEMBERS WHO WILL INTERPRET PAINTINGS FOR OUR CLUB S ART-IN-BLOOM IN THE SPRING. PART ONE: Connecting with the Artist and His/Her Art Monday, November 16, 10:00 AM - Community Room Part One is a lecture/demonstration that will provide an in-depth lecture about how to approach the art, what elements to think about and how to choose materials. Marisa will bring artwork and illustrate the process with a demonstration. This workshop is free. PART TWO: Complementing the Artist s Work with Floral Art Monday, December 7, 10:00 AM - Community Room Part Two is a hands-on workshop. (Marisa would like all participants to have attended the lecture/demonstration on November 16.) She will bring in two different prints to interpret. Participants will interpret the pictures with the materials Marisa supplies, after which she will discuss each person s floral design in her usual kind and encouraging manner. The cost of all materials (container, flowers and Oasis) is $20.00 per person. 3 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US! At the GCFM Fall Conference, BSGC was given a certificate in recognition of our 50 years as a Federated garden club. PROGRAM TUESDAY NOVEMBR 17, 2009 Refreshments at 7:00 PM Program at 7:30 PM - Simon Hall Guests are Welcome CELEBRATION OF OUR 50TH YEAR AS A FEDERATED GARDEN CLUB Several members of our club will interpret the theme of our 50th Anniversary in flowers designed for different locations within the home. The floral designers will then explain their thinking as they complete their designs. THANKSGIVING CENTERPIECE WORKSHOP Monday, November 23, 7:00 PM Simon Hall This workshop will provide an opportunity for us to create a lovely centerpiece for our Thanksgiving tables. In a manner similar to last year s program, each participant will supply her own container, basket or low bowl, and will purchase her own fruits and vegetables. Marisa will provide an information sheet to help us with regard to scale and color, with hints for choosing appropriate materials. Marisa will supply foliage and greens, flowers, berries and other suitable plant or dried material. She will guide us in making our arrangements, using the materials according to the elements and principles of design. She will discuss each person s design at the conclusion of the workshop.
