The First to Offer 3D Mammography in Pierce County In my 29 years of mammograms, the experience at Carol Milgard is absolutely superior and has improved every year.
A Message from the Board Chair Dear Friends: The main purpose of a mammogram is to detect breast cancer as early as possible, which gives women more treatment options and increases their chance of survival. As a non-profit organization, the Carol Milgard Breast Center s mission is to make sure that all women, regardless of their ability to pay, have access to potentially life-saving mammography services, using the best available technology. To fulfill this community promise, the Carol Milgard Breast Center was the first in Pierce County to offer 3D mammography a revolutionary new tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer. Thanks to an extraordinary gift from the Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation, our caring physicians and staff provided 19,834 screening mammograms in the first nine months of offering 3D mammography. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we gratefully acknowledge our generous donors who gave the breast center more than $2.8 million in 2013 to help provide 3D mammography and other programs and services to women in our communities. And most of our revenue supports patient-centered care, in addition to financial aid offered to eligible patients. With our leading-edge technology, access to exams for all through financial aid, and our compassionate staff, we not only help save patients lives, but ensure their future health. With Gratitude, Sharon Snuffin, Chair Board of Directors Carol Milgard Breast Center Carol Milgard Breast Center 2013 Annual Report 1
2013 Year in Review Major Accomplishments & Milestones In June 2013, became the first facility to offer 3D mammography in Pierce County Conducted screening mammogram events for over 125 underserved women who could not afford needed services Partnered with the Leaders in Women s Health to promote breast health awareness in the African-American community and among women of color Hosted and participated in 38 breast health and community events to educate the community about the importance of annual mammograms and how to access financial aid Raised $10,325 from the Tacoma Rainiers Pink at the Park Fundraising Auction to support screening mammography for underserved patients Increased access for non-english-speaking patients by publishing financial aid forms in five foreign languages Maintained prestigious designation as Breast Imaging Center of Excellence awarded by the American College of Radiology Received 4th consecutive perfect score in mandatory FDA inspection Carol Milgard Breast Center 2013 Annual Report 2
Although many women passed through the days I was there each staff member I met treated me as though I was their only concern for the day true gifts of compassion and caring.
3d MAMMOGRAPHY As a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and a leader in breast health throughout the South Puget Sound, the Carol Milgard Breast Center was honored to be the first in Pierce County to offer 3D mammography in D mammography is an FDA-approved imaging technology used in combination with 2D digital mammography. It improves the detection of breast cancer over 2D imaging alone and can find breast cancer at an earlier stage. Women whose breast cancers are diagnosed at an early stage have a 93% or more survival rate in the first five years. The tech who took care of me explained the new machine and allayed my fears.
Saving More Lives and Improving Patient Care Advantages of 3D Mammography: Increases a woman s chance of survival when breast cancer is found earlier Gives women more treatment options because of earlier breast cancer detection Reduces the likelihood of call-backs for further imaging which reduces patient anxiety and expense Provides peace of mind due to greater clarity and accuracy Education Campaign: The implementation and launch of 3D mammography was a major undertaking. In addition to training breast center radiologists and staff in the new technology, we launched a comprehensive campaign for patients, providers and the greater community to educate them about the details and benefits of 3D mammography. Patient Demand and Volumes on the Rise: Patient demand and volumes have increased at the Carol Milgard Breast Center following the implementation of 3D mammography services. First-Time Patients: The breast center began offering 3D mammography in June, and from June through December 2013, more than 1,200 new patients scheduled their screening mammograms. Patient Volumes: From June 2013 through February 2014, the breast center welcomed 19,834 patients for screening mammograms, which is an increase from prior years. To serve the backlog of patients, the breast center extended its hours to include weekday evenings and Saturdays. Carol Milgard Breast Center 2013 Annual Report 5
Thanks to Our Supporters When I made a donation a couple of years ago, you mailed me a breast self-exam card. Because of that card, I found my lump in my breast. Donors & Volunteers Make a Difference As a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization, the breast center relies on charitable gifts and volunteer support to fulfill its mission of providing exceptional breast health services to all women in the community. We are very grateful for the generous support of individuals, businesses and foundations that make charitable contributions to the breast center. Our deepest thanks go to our selfless donors and compassionate volunteers who contributed hundreds of hours of service to the breast center in Thanks to our donors, the Carol Milgard Breast Center received more than $2.8 million in gifts and pledges to help provide programs and services to women in our communities. 11 Thanks to Our Leaders Leadership Helps Fulfill Our Mission In 2009, community leaders pioneered an innovative model of delivering breast screening and diagnostic services. Franciscan Health System and MultiCare Health System, along with managing partner TRA Medical Imaging, closed their respective breast imaging centers in Tacoma and opened the Carol Milgard Breast Center. It was the community s first imaging center focusing exclusively on breast care. Inspired by the vision of Khai Tran, MD, and the commitment and generosity of the Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation, the Carol Milgard Breast Center became a reality. The breast center s dedicated board of directors, owner representatives and staff continue to support us in fulfilling our mission of providing excellent and sustainable breast health services to all women in our community.
