1 October 2016 Omaha, Nebraska President's Message This month was busy as usual. We went to the Golden Living Retirement home on Grandparents Day (it is rumored that some of our members were able to reserve their future living quarters) and Apple Jack Fest in Nebraska City. Those traveling to the Apple Jack fest were joined by some of the Model A ers from the Lincoln Club. Some of us traveled to Beebeetown to eat at the Twisted Tail Restaurant, what a great place to have Bar-B-que ribs. October is the month for our White Elephant sale so we all need to go through our stash of treasures and bring some of your extra treasures that another member can t live without. I have seen things like auto parts, food items, beauty products and such items and handmade items. There seems to be a demand for any of these items. As I stated last month we will be looking for volunteers to help with the Regional in We will need tour leaders, people for solicitations from businesses, helpers for the many activities that will happen at the Ramada Hotel. A list of volunteer positions will be put out in the near future. We still need door prizes, silent auction items, security help, help with Kids activities and many other areas. We need especially for OUR CLUB members to talk positively about the Regional. It is an important objective to raise sufficient funds through advertising, sponsorship and attendance fees to fully fund the Regional. Esther is still seeking volunteers to be next year s candidates for our Club s officers, anyone who is interested please contact Esther. Unfortunately, I m still having trouble with my Pick-up. I went out Saturday to start it so my wife and I could go to with some of the club members to Nebraska City Apple Jack Fest and nothing happened, the starter wouldn t even click to try to engage. Keep your Model A rolling, Ken Grigsby Table of Contents: Calendar Upcoming Events Past Events Member News Ads Our Treasurer, Mike Cahalane, will start collecting 2017 dues at the October meeting. Dues for the local club are $24 per year, IF they are paid by December 1. After December 1, dues are $30. Looking forward to 2017 Esther Miller, our President-Elect, has been working hard with the Nomination Committee to find candidates for the 2017 officers and board. She reports that they are still looking for candidates for Vice- President/President-Elect and Secretary and can always use more for the Board. She is also looking for volunteers for Annual Banquet Chairperson (Jan 2018), Tour Committee Person, and the Monthly Eat Out Chairperson. October is the month for our White Elephant Silent Auction. Bring items that you no longer want, but that might be just what someone else want. Model A parts and literature are always good, but any household, garage, personal items are fine. Also, baked goods and home-made items are always big sellers. Profits go to the club treasury. 1

MONTHLY EAT-OUT NEWS September Eat-out On Friday the 16th, the weather was great as 19 people made their way to Beebeetown and the Twisted Tail. Ribs were the main menu and all agreed they were great, lots of good eating and even some "take home" boxes. As always, it was good company and good conversation. Be sure and sign up because after wards we will be seeing where we will be having the different events during the Regional. 3 Upcoming Events Highway Pickup October 15 Don t Miss It!!! The Club needs a minimum of 12 hardy, fun loving, civic minded members that want to spent an hour outside with fellow members picking up the shoulders of a two mile segment of highway 36 west of Bennington. If we can get 12 volunteers, job is a lot easier. We will meet at 10:00 am at Cubby s, C W Hagan Dr., Bennington, NE. (156th & Highway 36). From there, we will carpool to our section of Hwy 36. So bring some gloves, a bucket, and some good walking shoes. Following our short walk we will return for lunch at Runza. So don t miss the fun and the opportunity to do some good while getting some fresh air and enjoying the company of fellow members. A sign-up sheet will be available at the October meeting. If you can not make the meeting, please call me at (402) Thanks, Howard Denker Meadowlark Scavenger Hunt Sunday Oct 23, 2016 Cass County is not doing their Scavenger hunt this year. For October we have created our own scavenger hunt. We will be going to four cemeteries, hunting for head stones, and answering question about pioneers and prominent people of the history of Cass County. We will stop at the South Bend Rock Island rail bridge that is now a walking bridge across the Platte River. It once supplied many goods to these small towns and was the reason for their existence. Our last stop will be at the Slattery Vintage Winery. We will meet for Lunch at Parker's Smoke House at 11:00 am off Hwy6 at Hwy 63 west of Ashland Neb. and plan to depart Parker's at 12:15. Will drive about 80 miles. So come out and enjoy the fall leaves changing, a little history, and maybe even some ghost stories. The current newsletter has entertaining stories, puzzles, cartoons, and even a Model A to color. Any Model A lover of any age should find something of interest in it. Could you do this? Sometimes we think our long Model A tours are kind of grueling, but they are nothing compared to what antique motorcycle owners have been doing recently. The Cannonball Run from Atlantic City, New Jersey to Carlsbad, California is 3304 miles. You can see the route at That would be hard enough on any motorcycle (editor s opinion), but all of these motorcycles are from 1916 or before and have original engines. 4

5 Past Events SEPTEMBER 11 TH AT GOLDEN LIVING On a beautiful late summer Sunday afternoon 14 Meadowlark families met at Barney Deden s shop for cold sodas and treats (courtesy of Linda Crisman) and a chance to visit with members of the Centennial Model T Club. The Meadowlark Board of Directors also used this time for their monthly meeting. After 1-1/2 hours, 24 Model T s and Model A s made the 5 minute drive to the Golden Living Home for an event celebrating Grandparents Day, Patriots Day and a special recognition of those lost in the terrorist acts of 9/11/2001. We had an enjoyable 2 hours to visit with the seniors at Golden Living as they reminisced about their memories of early times in old Ford cars. The home hosted a very nice event with live music and children s activities and treated us to snacks and lemonade while we sat under a great shade tree in the cool breeze. Submitted by Barney Deden It s hard to see in this photo, but the gentleman at the right is wearing a cap that shows he is a Purple Heart recipient. We missed getting a photo, but the local fire station was visiting at the same time in a big fire truck. The Firemen appeared to be enjoying the cars as well. It was fun talking to both the Golden Living Residents and the Firemen. They had lots of good questions and the Golden Living folks especially had lots of good memories to share. Of course, sitting in the shade was also enjoyed. 5

6 More Past Events MODEL A S AT ARBOR LODGE September 18 TH was the last day of the annual AppleJack festival in Nebraska City. The Meadowlark Club participated again this year by displaying our A s along with those of the Cornhusker Model A Club from Lincoln. We had a total of 9 A s and one AA truck lined up in front of the Morton Mansion. A very large crowd wandered through our cars and asked questions about their history, mechanics, body styles, driving comfort and similar topics. Our hostess, Laura Steinman, provided lunch, cold drinks, free tours of the Mansion and met any other needs we requested. The weather was perfect to sit in the shade with a mild breeze and imagine our cars as they would have looked in front of this beautiful mansion 85 years ago. 8 Member News Contact Karen Wickey ( ; if you have any member news, good or bad, that you would like to share. Dale Freyer had knee surgery recently and is at Brookestone Village for rehabilitation. Audrey says he went through the operation with flying colors. He will be at Brookestone for awhile. Audrey said that his doctor said it would be a month, but Dale said it would be two weeks. Sounds like a determined patient! Audrey said Dale would love to have company. Don and Janet Graves have a greatgranddaughter! Arielle was born on September 6 to their grandson, Mark and his girlfriend, Samantha. Vicki Heeren received the prestigious Excellence in Education Award on September 24 in Sioux City. Bishop R. Walker Nickless presented the award to Vicki at the 20th annual banquet of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sioux City. Vicki teaches Kindergarten at St. Mary s School in Remsen, Iowa. You don't always see them, but you know they're always there.
