Volume 41, #10 October, 2009 President s Message As September has come and gone, I want to thank all those members who helped with the different activities.

Thanks to all who helped with the litter pick-up, always satisfying to do something for the community. Thanks for all who showed their cars at the Listeners Appreciation Party.

1 Volume 41, #10 October, 2009 President s Message As September has come and gone, I want to thank all those members who helped with the different activities. The annual picnic/grandparents Day was a huge success; thanks to Lee and Bob for being the cooks and thanks to Don and Karen for setting up the Hubley track, as all the men had fun with their toys. Thanks to all who helped with the litter pick-up, always satisfying to do something for the community. Thanks for all who showed their cars at the Listeners Appreciation Party. International Model A Day was fun going to Woodbine Apple Fest/Car Show/ Flee Markets. Couldn't pass up the chicken and noodles again this year. I won't say which Lloyd Burke was first in line. Our tour to Tekamah s, Silverhills Winery was fun. Started out chilly but warmed up as the tour progressed. As November is fast approaching, it is time to think about running for office or as a Board Member. I've enjoyed being Secretary, Vice-President, and President and thank you for all your support. Contact Howard Denker if you decide to throw your hat in. Also on our election night is our annual White Elephant sale, so bring all that unwanted stuff to help the club's treasury grow. Seven Model A s, several clowns, games, free food, ice cream, pop corn and music were all present to help the radio station thank their listeners for their continued support. I would like to give a big thank you to Ed & Millie Jankowski, Bob & Mary McKinney, Don & Karen Noodell, Steve Lustgarten, Lee Hendrix, Don Graves, and Howard Denker who supplied cars to share with the listeners, and helped get the Meadowlark Model A club some good publicity. If you are not on The board and would like to come, please call the Rand s and let them know to expect you. Thanks to all of you for the cards and calls during my recent stay in the hospital, they were all appreciated. Still have a lot of stuff in the garage that I probably won t be using. Call and let me know what you need, want, or are looking for. I ll make a list and when I can get to the garage, I ll look it up. 6 Grandparents Day picnic and Hubley races The picnic was incredible weather good food, great friends and a fun time for the big boys and their toys. There was some illegal activity going on but in the spirit of the games, some aerosol can activity was ignored. All in all the hubley races and car games were a fun time.

7 THE YEAR 1909 This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! The year is One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1909 : The average life expectancy was 47 years. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower! The average wage in 1909 was 22 cents per hour. The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME. Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which Were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard. ' Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from Entering into their country for any reason. Five leading causes of death were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea

8 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!!! Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea Hadn't been invented yet. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health' ( Shocking? DUH! ) Eighteen percent of households had at least One full-time servant or domestic help. There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE! U.S.A.! (Mainly because there was a firearm of some sort in almost every home! An armed society is a POLITE society!!) I am now going to forward this to someone else without typing it myself. >From there, it will be sent to others all over the WORLD - all in a matter of seconds! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years. IT STAGGERS THE MIND

Volume 40, #3 March, 2008 President s Message As I sit writing this letter, it is 42 degrees outside and I am getting the itch to take a Model A out and drive it. Then the TV set said snow is coming in.
