2 The Rarest Vintage I work hard, and I earn a fair, if not generous, wage. i don t complain and I never hint about deserving a raise. This is part of my nature, and also part of my discipline as a recovering alcoholic. Nevertheless, after a long week, I sometimes forget to feel grateful for the fact that I have steady employment. on a Friday afternoon, holding my paycheck, I sometimes think enviously of those who earn more than I do. Tired from a hectic day, I too easily forget that my drinking once rendered me completely unemployable,. And after almost three years of sobriety, I still slip into the daydream of how much better my life would be if only I had wealth. On a recent Saturday evening, through my husband s work, I was invited to dinner with a group of professionals and their spouses' The setting was a fashionable restaurant where the entrees looked like works of art and tasted like manna from heaven. Across from me sat an attractive, well-heeled couple. My guess was that their combined income in a day was probably equal to what i earn in a month. As the evening progressed, I watched them kill bottle after bottle of expensive and rare wine. At first they spoke intelligently about grape regions, bouquets, and such. Their knowledge of wine was so vast that they seemed to have earned divine permission to drink, and drink deeply. Only d drunk like me would have noticed how they began to fumble with their cutlery and struggle with words as the evening wore on. Their appetites weren t particularly keen. Most of all, I noticed that despite their educated palates, they seemed to have no taste buds when it came to food. when the conversation turned to our dinners, they were unable to identify the subtle flavors: the lime on the swordfish; the savory in the grilled vegetable; the tart blueberries in the jasmine rice. It dawned on me that this wealthy couple probably didn t even get much pleasure from their rare vintages. The ruse of being connoisseurs simply gave them permission to get drunk in nice company. My higher Power must understand that I learn best through irony and coincidence. Earlier that same day, I had been summoned to a coffee shop by as AA newcomer who was in great distress. Unable to hold her coffee cup because of the shakes, this impeccably dressed but worn-out looking woman told me her story. Years of success and a high income had added up to nothing. Her children were strangers. Her marriage was almost finished. She d reached the point where she kept a bottle in her desk at work. She could barely hold down food. Passing out had become her only form of sleep. In short, despite all her money, she was just as sick, desperate, and miserable as any other alcoholic in the world, rich or poor. After this interesting sequence of events on the weekend, I went back to work on Monday much happier with the state of my affairs. I remembered to be thankful for my job, my health, my family, and the sobriety that had brought me these gifts. Perhaps my new attitude showed. O perhaps it was God s intention that I earn my wage on many different levels. That next Friday, after over two years at the same job, I got my first raise. I hadn t even mention to my boss that I d been dissatisfied with my income. And to top it off, she included a onethousand dollar bonus to show her appreciation for my uncomplaining loyalty to the company. How strange! Now that I have a better income, it doesn t actually matter. I m just grateful that I have enough sobriety to appreciate the rarest vintage of all: twenty-four hours of sobriety. Lynn F. Hamilton, Ontario From the April 2002 Grapevine.
