1 PO BOX , DALLAS, TX President s Message: The Final Word I find it hard to believe my year as President is up. Like many things in life the year goes by fast. Right when you figure things out it is time to move on. So let s recap the year and see what we have done! Objective #1 Provide timely updates on Healthcare Reform in Washington, Texas and Dallas. August- Town Hall Meeting with Congressman Pete Sessions September- Update and Panel with John Stacy from Not in Texas October-Dr. Devon Herrick from the Goodman Foundation on solutions for Healthcare costs March-Texas Representative Carl Isett from Lubbock discussing his ideas on HCR. We did both and because of their hard work and dedication we were recognized as the Large Chapter of the Year for Texas! Objective #3 Provide a Strong Educational Focus (CE s) dealing with Legislative issues and Educate the Community on the HCR debate Tamela Southan & Jacqueline St Hilaire lead the way for us in Texas with both serving on the TAHU State Board in Legislative positions. 8 LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY By: Ed Oleksiak - State Legislative Chair Texas Sunset Advisory Commission, TAHUs and DAHUs role important during Reform: The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission reviews the operation and efficiency of more than 130 state agencies. Most agencies undergo Sunset review every 12 years. The Sunset Commission is comprised of five members of the House, five Senate appointees and two public members make up the panel. Appointees conduct comprehensive evaluations of agencies such as the Texas Department of Transportation, the Railroad Commission, the Texas Public Utility Commission, and the Department of Insurance. Twenty-nine agencies are scheduled for Sunset reviews during the biennium. The Sunset Commission s meetings associated with the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) have been tranquil due to the enormity of the impact which National Health Care Reform will have on TDI. Most of the 2011 recommendations are carryovers from the 2008 recommendations which were not passed during the last Legislative Session. DAHU/TAHU will play a critical role between now and 2014 representing and informing members on issues related to National Health Care Reform. HHS will be relying on State Insurance Commissioners to assist with the implementation process. We need to be very vocal. Stay involved at the local, State and National level. SB 79 certification was a huge success and a win-win for all involved especially DAHU and its members. Have you ever wondered how you can get a copy of the pictures taken at our monthly Luncheon / Events??? Well, you are in luck! They are now available at 4 x 6 Pictures can be purchased online for $1 per picture. DAHU will donate all the proceeds collected to Jonathan's Place, a non-profit organization that provides temporary shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children and also offers Foster & Adoptive Family Programs.
