This time of year holds a special place in my heart for so many reasons. One, is that November is celebrated as National Hospice & Palliative Care month. This designation gives a more visible platform to the importance of our care and the benefits it can provide to patients and families. Much of this year has been one of reflection as we are celebrating 25 years serving western Colorado. Our growth and change over the years reminds me that the impact of your generosity is extraordinary. We served 81 patients our first year of operation and 25 years later, we have served more than 22,000 hospice patients and families. We are proud of our tradition of collaboration and innovation within our very generous communities and could not do this without your support. Yet, there remains more to do. The coming year will be a transformational one for HopeWest as we launch our P.A.C.E. program and open the Center for Living Your Best. These programs will allow aging residents to remain at home while we provide expert medical care, social activities and other services that otherwise would not be available. 2 Philanthropy Corner When you donate to HopeWest, where does your money actually go? Debbie Horwitz, VP, Chief Development Officer If you are reading this, you know how important generosity is to sustain the care HopeWest offers our community. We simply could not provide the level of services we do without your support. So, we join with your friends and neighbors in thanking you. As a donor you have the privilege of directing your gifts to specific programs and services provided by HopeWest. When you do, the regulations that go along with being an IRS recognized non-profit obligates us to use that gift for expenses specifically related to carrying out that program or service. For instance, if you designate your year-end gift to HopeWest Kids, that money can only be used to pay for expenses connected with delivering those services. HopeWest Kids offers grief counseling for our community s youth when they lose a loved one. These specialized programs are available to any child in our community, not just those who lost a loved one in hospice care. Last year, HopeWest Kids provided support to more than 600 youth, through grief in school groups, camps, individual and family counseling and equine assisted therapy. With little to no insurance reimbursement for these services, your donations ensure the viability of the program. If you make no designation, the money will be used where the need is greatest. What does that mean? Medicare and insurance reimbursement does not cover the cost of the care we all want our loved ones to receive. For instance, having 24/7 access to medical assistance when your loved one is suffering (without calling 911 or going to the Emergency Room) is, to quote one of our families, a sense of security no amount of money could buy. In other words, your generosity enables HopeWest to do what is best for the patient and family without worrying about keeping expenses equal to or below what Medicare pays. Other programs that may use non-designated philanthropy funds include our palliative care and adult bereavement programs. Like HopeWest Kids, these programs would not be available without your generosity. 3 HopeWest Kids November 15 is Children s Grief Awareness Day Did You know? Last year School grief groups were held during school hours. 41 Children and teens participated in equine therapy groups. 215 HopeWest Kids participants experienced the loss of a parent. More than 600 children and teens were helped by HopeWest Kids Individual counseling sessions were held. 78 Children and teens participated in HopeWest camps.

4 Spotted around Happenings across Calcutta for a Cause Our 2nd annual golf tournament in Grand Junction, Calcutta for a Cause, was a smashing success! All proceeds from this event support our HopeWest Kids program. Thank you to all of our amazing underwriters who helped make this happen and all the tireless work on behalf of our golf committee and Development Team we couldn t have done it without you! Concert Benefiting HopeWest featuring Internationally Acclaimed Harpist The Montrose community was in for a treat recently as internationally acclaimed harpist, Martha Gallagher, shared her musical talent while supporting HopeWest. Martha was accompanied by her husband, Dennis Gallagher, on guitar. The duo performed unique arrangements from a variety of genres including Celtic, classical, and swingin jazz. 04

5 our communities the Western Slope Meeker Gala Under the Big Top This year s new gala theme, Under The Big Top, was met with excitement from the community. Nearly 275 people attended the annual event in support of HopeWest-Meeker. Kiwanis supports HopeWest Kids Thank you to Kiwanis Club of Grand Junction for donating $5,000 to the HopeWest Kids program. The awarded money will support Forget-Me-Not, a group that families attend together. The group, open to school-age children, teens and adults, provides a safe and caring place to explore grief and its impact on the family. Forget-Me-Not also offers education and support to adults who are parenting grieving kids. 05

7 HopeWest Volunteer News Welcome Hedy New Volunteer Coordinator in Delta Hedy Hodges I am very excited to be the new Volunteer Coordinator for HopeWest in Delta! Like many of you, I knew of HopeWest s excellent reputation in our community and hope to add to this wonderful organization in my new role. I was born and raised in Sitka, Alaska and am Alaska Native, from the Tlingit people. I have always had a strong sense of community and a passion to volunteer. Moving off of the island, I ended up in Durango, CO at Fort Lewis College where I got my BA in Psychology and met my husband. We were married eight years ago and have two kids who are seven and two. We settled in Cedaredge four years ago and love that we are close to family in this area. Some of my hobbies include taking care of my 13 chickens, my 7-month-old Small Munsterlander puppy, hunting, knitting and baking. REMINDERS TIMESHEETS are due the 5th of every month. Every hour you dedicate to our organization counts and must be reported. Contact your local office with any questions. WINTER WEATHER Please remember during this time of year to use caution when volunteering. If the roads are bad, please stay home. If you can t see your patient, please call them and let them know you need to reschedule. If you are working at one of the offices, call or your supervisor to let them know that you are staying home. Your safety is important to us! Holiday Closures Administrative Offices will be closed for the following holidays: Thursday, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23 for Thanksgiving Monday, Dec. 24 and Tuesday, Dec. 25 for Christmas Monday, Dec. 31 and Tuesday, Jan. 1 for New Year s For updates or questions about your patients during these closures, please call the HopeWest main line.
