1 WAA-Fox Valley Chapter 10/8/18 Monthly Chapter Meeting Attendees: Nancy Schanke, Jonna Higgins, Kathy Jezwinski, Lou Blasczyk, Tom Shambeau, Jerry VanDynHoven, John Siebers, Marion Peterson, Rick Peterson, and Jackie VanDeHey Greeting Nancy Schanke welcomed everyone to the meeting. Consent Agenda: Read Only (opportunity at the meeting for questions/comments) Action items are listed within the body of the meeting notes in red. Sept Meeting Notes: 4E/edit Questions or comments? Reports Executive Team: President: (Nancy Schanke) 1. Kathy and John will be attending the Chapter Leaders Conference. I will be attending some of it as well as part of the Advisory Council. Looking to be a good time of learning and networking. 2. Fox Valley Chapter clothing opportunities. I got the approval from the Licensing and Trademark Department to use our logos for clothing we might want to purchase. We will need to go through 4Imprint in Oshkosh. 3. Team and Event leaders for We will discuss this as the last item on the agenda. Vice President : (Travis Powell) Immediate Past President : (Nancy Scheuerman) Treasurer : (Jonna Higgins) Nicolet National Bank - Checking Account $11, WAA Fox Valley Chapter - Foundation Account $11, Community Foundation Account - 9/30/18(unaudited) $27, Secretary : (Paula Vandehey) Nominating Team Report : Nancy Scheuerman: Nominations for Fox Valley Chapter Leadership positions: President: John Siebers Vice-President: Kathy Jezwicki
2 Treasurer: Jackie VanDeHey Secretary: Paula Vandehey Past President: Nancy Schanke Are there any nominations from the floor? There were not. Marion commented that it was unfortunate that one of the executive team members resigned after contributing so much in past years. Nancy Schanke explained that our chapter was in violation of WAA by-laws by not having all UW alums on the Executive Team & it was critical that the resignation be accepted. Chapter Leader s Conference Call ( Nancy Schanke, Travis, Jackie, John) Jim Kennedy WAA Marketing: Day of the Badger 4/9/19. Giving Day event. Goals: Raise funds Show pride Connect with other alums We are only 1 of 2 in the Big Ten that doesn t do this. Very successful in retaining donors, getting new and younger alums. Partnership with WFAA and chapters. Chapters will have ways to energize event, maintain that section of the website, secure matches/challenges. Communications on Day of the Badger begin March 2. Jonna commented that Purdue does a Giving Day and it is a very successful fundraiser. Mark Rein: Heart of Illinois Chapter fundraising Old program: similar to what we do with similar results as us. Minimal returns for high effort New program: Send one fundraising letter where they connect alum with kids with pictures. Sent it to entire chapter area, not just suspected donors. Highlight that donations go directly to students in our area. Emotional, not logical approach. Hand written notes from scholarship recipients to each donor. Continue to engage scholarship winners in future events. Follow up with donors and BOTY winners. Where are they now? follow up in newsletters. Endowment with UW Foundation. Continue to look at other chapter webpages and facebook posts for the best ideas. Travis Powell comment: one thing I picked up on was that funds from signed memorabilia can t be used for scholarship funds. Can be used for operating expenses. Jackie to send the addresses of the scholarship winners to Nancy, John, and Kathy so they can follow-up with recipients on attending the scholarship reception next week at the WAA conference. Next chapter leader teleconference: Oct 24 3:00pm. Topic: Founder s Day Fundraising Team (Jonna Higgins) 1. Red Smith Sports Banquet silent auction (Jonna Higgins) Tuesday, January 15, 2019, Red Lion Hotel Paper Valley, Appleton, WI *Room Confirmed for Set-Up the night prior to event *Letters/ s/Online Donation Request sent 9/20/18 *Eric Wenzel, Consignment Mdse, is reviewing possible large ticket items for consignment Please send names of popular sports players to Jonna, so she can get them to Eric. *Follow Up phone calls will begin today to businesses from donation request *Have received some donation request responses via tickets, vouchers
3 2. Scheels Badger Tailgate (Jackie Van De Hey & Travis Powell) From Travis: The weather for this event was beautiful. Another good turnout. The team raised $550 at this event this year. We had the Square Credit Card reader, but I believe the battery was dead - didn t seem like it would have increased the number of people that purchased tickets. Seemed like a lot of people purchased the arms length for $20. Scheels was more organized and had people get a ticket to get food. They had 400+ people show up (not sure of exact number). One thing that was different this year was that they didn t put all the prizes out for people to look at - Scheels thought it was too windy. They asked if we could take the prizes this year and bring them to the winners, but I strongly recommended (and they eventually agreed) that they should keep the prizes to be claimed at the front desk for people to pick up. Otherwise I would have to find a place to meet the winners, etc. Package #1 - Won by Best Package #2 - Won by Jason Laumel Jackie to follow-up with Travis on the final report. 3. Sustained Giving Team (Travis Powell, Lou Blasczyk, Conor Duffin, Nancy Schanke) Next meeting is Tuesday, Oct 23 at 5:30 at Solea on Casaloma. New team members welcome. Kathy and John will attend to gain an understanding of what this team does. 4. Just a reminder, we are in the period of fundraising until Nov 30 when the UW All Ways Forward Campaign ends. Scholarship Team (Bill Devine) Outreach Events Team (Nancy Schanke) Minority Student Trip (Rick & Marion Peterson) Founder s Day (Paula Vandehey) Student Send Off (Jonna Higgins) Badger Cafés (Jackie) Appleton Beer Factory will be the site for the Tues Oct 30 event Registration will start at 6:15, with the event from 6:30-7:30 from WAA has not yet gone out Correction: the first did go out, on 9/25. The event was submitted to WPR, and to the Post Crescent A Facebook Event has been created Building Partnerships/Wisconsin Idea Events (Jim Perry) Tom- German Event: Any updates we need to know? Jackie will send Tom the list of attendees at the beer tasting so he can invite them to the German dinner. We decided to auction off 2 of the remaining Orange Bowl footballs. We will use our red raffle tickets and Jonna will purchase some new ones that we will use as drink tickets. Kathy, Marion, and Rick offered to come early and help with registration & set-up. Kathy will pre-print name tags. Tom is looking for a projection screen (one that has a stand, where the screen is large and pulls out and then hooks on the stand). Contact him if you have one. Jackie will submit the event to WPR and the Post Crescent.
4 Community Service Projects John Siebers- Homeless Connection. Will share the details of what needs to happen for Saturday morning. Marion & Rick Peterson, Jackie, and John & his wife Tina will all help on Sat. John will purchase all the food and submit a receipt to Jonna. The chapter will fund the food but if anyone wants to give a personal donation give it to John. Social Events Team Game Watch Parties: Some of our younger alums at the beer tasting expressed interest in having game watch parties. We might want to consider one for the Penn State (11/10) game since there is a Penn State alum group you like to come to watch games. We will do a game watch for the Penn State game at the Appleton Street Sports Bar. The Penn State alum have challenged us to be there. Jackie will submit an event request. We will auction our remaining Orange Bowl footballs at the game watch. Wine & Beer Tasting events Unique Alumni Events (i.e. Red & White Ball) Emprize Beer Tasting was a big success!
