1 HE HANGAR Our New Logo The T you see in the name of our newsletter is our new logo. The split T design was inspired by the doors of the historic Tustin Blimp Hangars and was created to honor Tustin s military history while being a clean, modern look that represents the doors opening in our future. Ch Ch Ch Changes Welcome to the first edition of The Hangar - The official newsletter of the Tustin Police Officers Association (TPOA). Over the past two years the TPOA has undergone a renaissance of sorts. We have a new and motivated board of directors who are re-inventing the association and driving it forward into the future. In the pages of this and upcoming newsletters you will read about many of the improvements we have made and are working towards making in the future. From bringing our by-laws up to today s standards, to improving benefits for not only our current members and their families, but retired members as well, to an increased focus on building relationships in the community we serve by starting TPOAcares 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization, the future of the TPOA has never been brighter. 2 2016 FUNdraising Drive At our recent TPD Open House many people asked us why they hadn t yet received our annual fundraising letter. That question is a good one, and one that illustrates the amazing support we get from the residents and businesses here in Tustin. Here is the answer. THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS While our membership dues pay for the day to day operations and many of the benefits we provide our members and their families, a lot of what we do would not be possible without the benefit of our generous sponsors. Words cannot express our appreciation for your continued support. In the past we have always used a professional fundraising company to assist us with our fundraising efforts. As part of a thorough examination of ALL of our practices, we realized two things. First, we realized by not doing our own fundraising, we were missing out on a wonderful opportunity to build a personal relationship with our supporters, like you. Second, we realized our supporters would prefer the knowledge that 100% of your contribution was going to the TPOA and it s causes rather than expensive fundraising companies. Lastly, in March 2016 our new 501(c)(3) - Charity Organization, TPOAcares, was officially approved by the IRS. This is a great benefit to our association and more importantly - to our donors. Tustin POA OLD TOWN JAIL To put the fun into fundraising, our members built the TPOA Old Town Charity Jail. JAIL n BAIL For $5 you can jail someone for 10 minutes. They can bail out for $10 or stay out of jail all day for $20. PHOTOS At larger events, we can simply use our jail for great photo opportunities. $2 suggested donation. All proceeds go to TPOAcares. 3 2016 TPOA AWARDS BANQUET The 2nd Annual TPOA Awards Banquet was held at the Marconi Auto Museum in January of The purpose of this TPOA Award Winners TPOA Officer of the Year Officer Robert Nelson Supervisor of the Year ceremony is to reward the Sergeant Dana Harper outstanding work of Tustin TTPOA Rookie of the Year Police Department sworn (TPOA) and civilian (TPSSA) personnel, and volunteers. The ceremony also saw TyRon Jackson win the inaugural Tustin PD Officer Stephanie Kimosh Dedication & Professionalism Community Award for his tireless efforts to assist homeless Detective Natalie Nguyen families through his charitable organization - Operation Warm Volunteer of the Year Wishes. Richard Ruedas Cadet of the Year A beautifully decorated Marconi museum was Brandon Jehoich packed with Tustin PD Explorer of the Year employees and Michael Duff volunteers and many Community Service Award distinguished guests, Detective Natalie Nguyen members of the Officer John Hedges community, and PSO Megan Evans generous sponsors, all there to show their support not only to PSO Adriana Tokar the night s award winners, but to the Tustin Police Department PSO Marilyn Packer as a whole. A special thank you to our TyRon Jackson event sponsors. Without Life Saving Award your generosity, this Officer Bonnie Breeze wonderful night would not Officer Tim Carson have been possible. 4 TPOAcares TPOAcares 501(c)(3) Non-profit organization was established in early 2016 as the charity arm of the Tustin POA. TPOAcares will be vital in our efforts to better serve our officers and the community they serve. Our focus is as follows; TPOAcares Widows and Orphans Fund: Our goal is to take care of the family of any officer killed or disabled in the line of duty be helping pay for college education, youth sports,etc. TPOAcares Youth Programs: We believe creating and running youth programs such as TPD Explorers, Run with a Cop, and Knowledge is Power after school programs will make Tustin a better, and safer place to live, and work for all of us. Community Charity Partnerships: Tustin has so many important community organizations and events already. In addition to creating our own events, we enjoy being part of all community events. Awards and Scholarships: In addition to our annual Awards Banquet, we also have two scholarships for Tustin High School Students. RUN WITH A COP TPOA members created, planned, and ran a 9 week running club at Heideman Elementary School. Throughout the program par@cipants not only ran, but were given a series of challenges to reinforce healthy ea@ng, physical ac@vity, proper sleep habits, and being a good ci@zen. The program concluded on Saturday June 11 with the Run with a Cop Summer Celebra@on. Par@cipants ran their 26th mile of the program and received a medal before the whole community had fun at a carnival that included free dental care, free vision screening, free haircuts and several other important community resources.
