1 JULY, A DISTRICT GOVERNOR JIMMY HO S NEWSLETTER Message from DG Jimmy My dear fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos, It is truly an honour for me to serve as your District Governor. As you may know, it is a once in a life time experience serving as a District Governor and I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all of you who have supported me throughout the past few years. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. MULTIPLE DISTRICT 19A.VANCOUVER.BC.CANADA The 97th LCI International Convention held in Toronto this year was a great success and it was an eye opener for me. Although I am not a first time participant, being the District Governor Elect opened up the opportunity to meet a lot of the Past International Presidents, Past International Directors, Past District Governors and of course those Incoming ones from around the world, what a privilege! Better yet, I was fortunate to have a chance to meet and had a good long chat with our freshly installed International President, Joe Preston - a very down to earth, energetic and passionate person. Incidentally, I have found some common traits with our new President, our career path and our passion for music. There, I have brought home his new introduced Award Programs to share with you and your clubs as listed on the District GLT-Award Program template. Our District Goals for this year is simple but it takes your vision, commitment and implementation to achieve. We expect to see 2 new charter clubs of minimum 40 charter members before the end of December We like to see a net gain of 1 member in each club and it starts by inviting one friend, one neighbor or one family member to join. Give them a chance to be a Lion, a chance for your club to grow - just "Ask One" today. Our District Project this year is to help fundraising for Lions Foundation of Canada, a National Charity Foundation that was created by the Lions of Canada. Its mission is to assist Canadians with medical or physical disability by providing them with 6 different types of trained Dog Guides AT NO COST. Funding for the training of the dogs is by donation, sponsorship and fundraising activities, since Lions Foundation does not receive any government funding. Our district goal this year is to raise $20, with the support of all of the clubs in the district. We, lions, are much more than just volunteers, we are an International family working together to STRENGTHEN our communities and the clubs we belong. I know you will share my vision and I do need your full support so that we can contribute more by serving Together as ONE. I wish you all a happy and safe summer season. Yours in Lionism Lion Jimmy Ho District Governor

6 LCI Peace Poster Contest Our World, Our Future Annual Art Contest for Kids Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For more than 25 years, millions of children from nearly 100 countries have participated in the contest. The theme of the Peace Poster Contest is "Peace, Love and Understanding." Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, are eligible to participate. Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners. International winners will be notified on or before February 1. One international grand prize winner will receive US$5,000 and a trip to a special award ceremony. Each of the 23 merit award winners will receive a cash award of US$500 and a certificate of achievement. LCI Environmental Photo Contest The Lions Environmental Photo Contest provides a way for Lions to portray, through an original photo, their pride and commitment to improving, protecting and preserving the environment. Every Lion from a club in good standing can enter a photograph of his or her immediate surroundings into the club-level Lions Environmental Photo Contest. This year s Lions Environmental Photo Contest includes the following five categories: Animal Life, Plant Life, Urban and Natural Landscape, Weather phenomenon, and Special Theme: Lion s Pride in our Environment. Grand Prize (Best of Show) The contest begins at the club level and winning photographs will advance to the district, multiple district, and international competitions. Lions can submit only one photograph of their environment. If the submitted photograph meets all of the criteria, it will be displayed at the Lions international convention where registered attendees will vote for their favorite in each category, as well as their overall favorite photograph. The six photos will appear on the Contest Winners page and the Lions photographers will receive an award. Click the link below for details: Page 6

10 1st Vice District Governor s Talk of the Lions / A-H-I District Facilitator I had the great pleasure of participating in the 97 th Lions Clubs International Convention in Toronto in early July with DG Jimmy and quite a number of MD19 Leaders. This global event was well organized with lots of events at the Air Canada and the Metro Convention Centres. Free buses connected to all the major hotels every 15 minutes or so but the downtown city centre was very busy and there is construction ongoing everywhere. The musical productions were impressive as was the annual Flag Ceremony, 206 in total always a very moving acknowledgement of all our many Clubs, Districts and participating Nations. I also enjoyed a day exploring Toronto s Harbour with Jimmy, Cindia and their Daughter, lots of activities. And on the Monday evening the DG & I visited with various Lions Districts & Clubs. The Kentucky Lions Youth Band performance was especially noteworthy. Two of their rousing numbers were conducted by PIP (1994~95) Prof. Giuseppe Grimaldi from Italy. He clearly appreciated their talent. All in all, a very busy five days! On July 19 th our Zone A-6 Sunshine Coast Lions celebrated their 50 th anniversary in Sechelt. Our DG, 1 st & 2 nd VDGs & partners all attended as well as PDG Linda & A-9 ZC David. A historical presentation was handled by long-time Lion Gary Foxall most interesting to note all the different community projects, fundraisers and housing projects this Club successfully completed. The highlight for many was the Big Band performance, musicians from all over the Sunshine Coast. It is difficult to find any Big Band to dance to these days so that was a very welcome surprise and many Lions danced the night away. This fall on Saturday, Nov. 1 st District 19A shall host the *AHI* meeting in West Vancouver. I have arranged for our *Tiddlycove* Clubhouse (see photo) to be available, it is th Street just half a block up from Marine Drive on the right. This is a very comfortable facility with plenty of space and easy to find from Upper Levels highway (#1) either from the Horseshoe Bay ferry or 2 nd Narrows and/or via Lions Gate Bridge. The overnight accommodation for Friday, October 31 st has been booked at the Comfort 1748 Capilano Road, North Van again just half a block north from Marine Drive. A goodwill rate has been $85 CAN and from this location it is only about an 8-minute drive west into West Van to the 20 th street. I shall furnish a detailed map closer to the actual meeting date. The Hotel # is For anyone wishing to make a full weekend the Capilano Suspension Bridge and extensive shopping at Park Royal are nearby as are various excellent restaurants along Marne Drive. Yours in Service & Fellowship, Eric R. ~ 1 st VDG. The Global Membership Team (GMT) which includes 1st VDG, PZC Teresina Lau, IPP Alex Wong, provides a global structure for membership development which is continuous, focused, and integrated. Collaborating with the Global Leadership Team, the GMT works in an interdependent manner with all Lions in the association for the benefit and success of the club. Members of the GMT and GLT work together to develop membership through service and engagement and also to support present Lions leaders and identify future leaders. The two teams operate as parallel structures and are connected and coordinated at the international level by an executive council The GMT/ GLT executive council is led by the LCI international president, with the international first and second vice presidents overseeing and providing guidance to the GMT and GLT respectively. Both the GMT and GLT are further supported by two international coordinators and a joint operations committee composed of the chairpersons of the Membership Development Committee, the Leadership Committee and the District and Club Service Committee, as well as a team of appointed constitutional area leaders. Page 10
11 2nd Vice District Governor s Corner Although most of the clubs are relatively inactive during the summer months, I have managed to keep busy with various activities around our District. On June 20 th, I attended the BC Lions Society Board of Directors meeting in Whitehorse, Yukon. While there we recognized the local Lions clubs for their contribution to the Easter Seals program. We met with the Premier to promote the services the Society provides in the hope of getting support from the Yukon Government. We also attended a fund raiser that was put on by a very special 12 year old girl who had stayed in the Easter Seals House while she received specialized treatment for a rare liver tumor. This amazing young lady raised in excess of $ for the Easter Seals House. The highlight of the trip was to take part in Air North s Midnight Sun Golf Tournament where we got to play golf among the mosquito s at midnight. The other thing that I did was to visit kid s camps to see where our donation money is spent. On July 12, I visited Camp Kakhamela on the Sunshine Coast. At the camp, I learned that there are two very important things that kids learn at camp. They learn that they are not alone with their Diabetes, there are other kids who have the same condition and are faced with the same life challenges. They also learn with the help of the Doctors and Nurses who volunteer their time to self diagnose their sugar levels and to administer the proper amount of insulin. This skill enables them to go home, confident that they can care for themselves for the rest of their lives. They also go home with new friendships that will last a lifetime. On July 17 th, I visited the CNIB camp at Camp Zajac in Stave Falls, North of Mission. This camp offers the kids challenges that the visually impaired and blind kids learn that they can conquer despite their disability. The self confidence that they learn and the friends that they make will last a lifetime. What I learned most is that our donations are being put to good use and that it s too bad that all Lions couldn t get to go to camp to see how great these programs are. District Global Leadership Team Highlight Members of the GMT and GLT work together to identify, develop and encourage opportunities for present and future Lions leaders, and to develop membership through service and engagement. The Global Leadership Team (GLT) which includes 2nd VDG, PZC Grace Hwo, IPZC Clara Chow, provides for an enhanced focus on leadership development, which is critical to the future vitality of our association. The GLT directs its efforts toward identifying and cultivating effective leaders through active training and leadership development initiatives, while providing necessary information, guidance and motivation. Operating as an action-oriented, parallel, mutually supportive team with the GMT, the GLT was developed to augment the local efforts of our DG Teams. By integrating the efforts of the GLT, the GMT and our DG Teams, we will be better able to address regional growth and development needs, while building our membership base, improving club health, and enhancing the quality of our leadership at all levels of the association. 16 Dear Lion and Lionesses, When I became president of Lions Clubs International, it was a dream come true. Now, I am honored to follow another dream as Chairperson of Lions Clubs International Foundation. The Foundation is a vital part of Lions' international service efforts, so I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve this year with support from LCIF. Last year, LCIF set a goal to raise US$35.7 million in funding to meet Lions' humanitarian needs worldwide. I am proud to say that you hit that mark! More than ever, Lions are involved in service projects to meet the needs of their communities. LCIF has seen an increase in requests for disaster relief assistance in recent years; Lions Quest continues to expand around the world, reaching more students than ever; we continue to fight preventable blindness, including from diseases like trachoma and river blindness; and we continue in our commitment to our partners at the GAVI Alliance in fighting measles, among many other humanitarian projects. Your contributions have helped people all around the world by providing disaster relief, saving sight, preventing measles, supporting youth and meeting humanitarian needs. To be able to help even more people, we have a new goal to raise US$38.3 million for LCIF and I know that we will be able to achieve it. In fact, I am going to challenge you to set the goal even higher! What if every Lions club donated US$100 per member to LCIF? We would raise US$136 million - imagine all of the good that could be done with those funds! As Lions, we can do almost anything. By working together, we can help each other to follow our dreams for a better world. You can make a difference, and LCIF can help. Sincerely, Barry J.
