1 19A-1 Zone Newsletter Better Understanding & Effective Communication Dear fellow lions, lionesses, and leos, support. ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW GOODS It is my great pleasure to bring you the GOOD NEWS of the birth of a NEW Cyber Lions Club, the VANCOUVER GALAXY LIONS CLUB who has of icially joined our Lions' Family at the end of October This Club is sponsored by Vancouver Shaughnessy Lions Club with myself and PZC Ellie Chan as the Certi ied Guiding Lions, and with the special honour of having PZC Grace Hwo as our New Club Planning Of icer. KUDOS to DG Linda Wong for all her work behind the scenes guiding us along, and a special warm Lion s hug and great big thank you to PZC Grace Hwo for all her endless efforts and tireless As you may know, I worked for the Fairchild Group of Companies Retail Division from During that time, I had the golden opportunity to interact and work with hundreds of young part time student workers who were either in University or High School. Throughout my time, the part timers came and gone but I had the good fortune of establishing close relationships with a few of them whom I consider family. I sensed in the summer of 2011 that the timing was ripe and called upon my young friends to form the irst Cyber Lions Club in the Lower Mainland. The core members liked the idea of service and being an integral part of one of the biggest charitable organizations that strives to make a difference in the world we live in today. Ultimately, they encouraged their friends and families to participate. This initial group of 21 charter members consist of 75 percent of my ex/co workers and 25 percent of family members and friends, all of whom are based in Vancouver. I believe this ratio is important as the members have already established strong working relationships and genuinely care for one another. We still have some prospective members lining up, who are currently either working overseas or emigrated to other country. The beauty of a Cyber Lions Club is that distance is never a constraint, thanks to the mobility of modern technology. I am delighted to see our Zone is growing so steadily with lots of fun members and full of leadership and determination to serve. As of now, we have 15 Lions Clubs, 1 Lioness Club and 3 Leos Club within our Zone. H O O R A Y!!! 4 Page 4 Better Understanding & Effective Communication Remembrance Day and the Vancouver East Lions Club It is no luke or chance that the Biggest Little Club in Lionism is a stalwart participant in commemoration services of our fallen heroes and veterans of all wars. Since the aftermath of WWI and WWII the Korean War and now the war on terrorism is Afghanistan our service men and women have been willing and able to rally to the calls for freedom against tyranny. Sacri ices of our young ighting men and women are beyond reproach as seen in the rows upon rows of the fallen in Flanders ields and other memorial sites around the world. To our members it has always been that way since the notion of commemorations services for our fallen and our veterans now and in the past. (left-right) Rachel, PP Alex, Pres. Winnie, PZC Grace and PP Renzo (including PP Betty Poon not in the photo) After chartering of our club on December 7 th 1943 it has become decided after VJ day by the founding members to make the notion into a tradition for all members of the Biggest Little Club in Lionism. The idea of honouring our fallen and our veterans took root marking every November 11 th Remembrance Day to celebrate their sacri ices (Lest we forget) every year up to the present. At irst all members congregated at Victory Square (Cambie and Hastings cenotaph) in Downtown Vancouver, BC. As the years progressed the Commercial Drive Cenotaph was eventually built separate for the Victory Square site in a park setting. Today the tradition continues with our club President Winnie Yu placing the wreath at the cenotaph while many members and others were present. Members from the Legions, Army and Navy veterans were present as well as members from the American branches. Dear Lion, I would like to share with you some exciting changes to our donation procedures that will enable us to help even more people. Many of you have shared with your Board of Trustees and me interesting ideas for expanding giving opportunities to our Foundation. As a result, you can now choose from five general categories to designate your donations and receive Melvin Jones Fellowship recognition for each donation: Area of Greatest Need: Donations in this category will support all program areas and allow LCIF the flexibility to supplement initiatives where additional funding is necessary or where the need is most urgent. Disaster: Donations designated here enable LCIF to direct the funds to the areas most in need following disasters in order to provide for immediate, mid and long-term relief. Sight: Donations here seek to support hundreds of sight-related activities ranging from equipping eye clinics to providing Braille computers for the visually impaired. Youth: Donations in this category support the Lions Quest program and other initiatives such as educational infrastructure improvements and programs to assist at-risk youth. Humanitarian Needs: Donations here will fund projects that meet diverse community needs beyond sight, disaster and youth, such as the measles program, water wells and vocational training programs for the disabled. I know you will agree with me that these positive changes will help LCIF to provide aid to even more people in need around the world. These changes are effective immediately for all future donations. Donating is as easy as before - details on each program can be found online. I thank you for your continued support! Serving today for a better tomorrow, Sid L. Scruggs, III, Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation
