1 DISTRICT 19A DISTRICT GOVERNOR JIMMY HO OCTOBER 2014 NEWSLETTER Dear Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos, Female membership increase to 26 percent up to date. This fiscal year was a banner one for female membership. A forty percent of all new Lions before end June were women and that brings female membership up to 26 percent. Statistic from Lions Club International shows 28 percent of female Lions in the U.S. and 28.2 percent in Canada. The Constitution area with most women was South America, Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico with 43.5 percent. Last was Europe with only 20.7 percent. The Board of directors approved in July, the continuation of the family and women task force to increase female membership and leadership as part of a longstanding effort toward those goals. It has been a vital demographic for new membership since the first women joined Lions in Women add new perspective to club activities and community needs and are known to increase hands-on projects for clubs. Please continue encouraging both men and women in your community to join Lions so that we can help others fulfill their dreams and as we progress towards a 50/50 membership. Last year, IPDG Peter Cheng had partnered with Lions Club International in an ongoing effort to grow women in Lions and recruited over 30+ women lions. Zone A7 alone had 32 women lions joined in (Vancouver Diamond Millennial Lion 13 and Vancouver Diamond Lions 9). As a result of his achievement, he was awarded with the "United in Service Pin" by the Lions Club International. Furthermore, he has achieved Top five fundraising to Lions Club International Foundation around the world and First place fundraising to Lions Club International Foundation in Canada. Congratulations! He has contributed so much to the Sunshine Coast Lions Club since joining in He served in many different capacities including twice as President. Through his service he, along with fellow Lions, did much for Sechelt and surrounding communities including the Cold Weather Shelter. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Mary Anne, his wife of 47 years and the rest of the family and friends. Bob passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Unit at Lions Gate Hospital where many friends of the family were able to say their final goodbyes. Marianne has arranged for a Celebration of Life will be held at the Seniors Activity Centre in Sechelt, Saturday, November 1st, from noon to 4 pm. There will be a short service of Remembrance followed by a buffet style meal as well as stories and recollections about Bob. In lieu of flowers the family will be requesting donations to either the Sunshine Coast Lions Club or the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society. There will be an announcement to this effect in the Coast Reporter on Oct 17th. Yours in Lionism A6 ZC Clifford Moss Page 3
4 1st Vice District Governor s Talk of the Lions Well, Ladies & Gentlemen, this was one busy October filled with Lions events. I attended and joined in with many! Visitations with the DG, a successful MD19 Fall Convention in Ocean Shores, Washington; a very successful Leos Leadership Workshop facilitated by Kirk Dickson - a full house no less and great enthusiasm; a GLT/GMT meeting discussing many membership, retention & Club issues with our ZCs and Cabinet members. An extraordinary Cabinet Meeting was held to fill our 2 nd VDG vacancy welcome aboard Simon Yau. I also connected with the Diamond Club Charity Halloween Bowl for Children s Hospital; many showed up in hilarious costumes. Who s in that Gorilla suit, you ask? None other than our PP Alex W. getting warm quickly. This, truly, was a fun event; I had not bowled in 15 years but did my best. Pres. Cheryl K. & Co. kept everything moving smoothly. And the Vancouver Legacy Club invited me to their 2 nd annual Installation Dinner, a very colourful affair. At the 4-day Ocean Shores Convention one of the most moving ceremonies is the Memorial Service. Can you believe that at this service on Oct. 18 th no less than 210 Lions were honoured as they had passed in the last 12 months. For some individual Clubs such as Wenatchee (7) and Everett (6) this has a significant impact. Luckily 19A only lost 9. This is why it is so important to attract new Members and retain current Lions; keep them involved, mentor and engage them. I am very happy to note Teresina Lau s report: from September s net loss of -22 to a net gain of +28 for October = 58 adds vs. 8 drops = 50 adds for October alone. Well done GMT & GLT team. North Vancouver Deep Cove Lions celebrated its 15 th Anniversary and our DG Jimmy burst into song accompanied by one of the Lady Members at the piano. At his visitation with Tiddlycove 9 Diamond Campus Club members also joined in and our DG rose to the occasion as the photo clearly shows handing out awards even to our tallest Member, Secretary Rod. All-in-all one eventful month! Further news: This Saturday, Nov 1 st, is our AHI Regional Progress & Planning Meeting in West Vancouver. I anticipate that 45 or more Lion Leaders from these 3 Districts shall be present, some as far away as Seattle and Sooke on Vancouver Island. It shall have a Town Hall format. Yours in Service & Fellowship, Eric R. Keller 1 st VDG Page 4

7 Empowering Community Service Leaders ( NOTE: Lions University is offered by the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum. Questions or comments about Lions University should not be directed to Lions Clubs International Headquarters, but rather to the Support page. ( As a Lions Club leader, you understand that building strong communities through volunteer service is our objective. The Lions University program is about making sure that you have the skills and resources to meet this objective. Through three degree programs, Lions Leaders will enhance their knowledge and skills to better serve their community. To complete a degree, Lions must complete 10 required courses and at least 5 elective classes. To complete a course, the Lion takes part in an hour long training session. These sessions are offered online on this website, through periodic webinars that are posted on this website, and through live sessions led in Districts and Multiple Districts. Once the training session is completed, the Lion takes a simple online test to confirm their learning. Upon completion, the Lion is awarded a certificate of course completion. Lions are welcome to complete the courses that interest them in any of the degree programs in any order they wish. Credit is given toward only the degree that the class is under. Bachelor of Lions Degree: This program allows Lions to develop the skills necessary to lead a vital Lions Club. Courses are directed to the skills needed to be great club leader. Masters of Lions Degree: This program focuses on giving support to clubs through district leaders. This degree is aimed at District Level leaders: District Governors, Vice District Governors, Zone Chairs, District Committee Chairs, Certified Guiding Lions, and other leaders that are ready to foster quality clubs in their District. Doctorate of Lions Degree: This program focuses on skills needed to be a training facilitator for adult volunteers. In affect, Lions with a Doctorate Degree are prepared to be great trainers of other Lions. Page 7
