Please check out extra books to keep your kids reading during the long break! You can also access hundreds of books online at Use your Stafford and password. Kids can practice their keyboarding on Typing Agent. You can find the link on the Stafford homepage under the LIBRARY tab, or go to Students can log on with their Stafford and password. For the next two weeks in the library, 1st 5th grade students will be learning how to write code and participate in The Hour of Code. Code.org's vision is that every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science. This is a teacher-led movement to bring opportunity to all schools, and to ALL students. Stafford students will embrace computer science. We will guide student learning to break stereotypes, to introduce more girls, more students of color, and more of our youngest learners, to this new and exciting field. Please see the OBOB section of our website under the library menu for information, book lists and registration forms. If your child has not turned in their form, but would like to participate, please let me know so we can extend the deadline. Before winter break, we will release a schedule with battles starting sometime in late January or early February. A coaches meeting for OBOB will be held on Wednesday, December 2nd at 12:00. 2 Counseling Corner A Season of Gratitude This is the time of year when we focus on everything we are thankful for in our lives. Practicing thankfulness or gratitude is an important practice to engage in with your children throughout the year. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we want to all that we have. When we deliberately cultivate gratitude in our children, we increase their happiness and well-being. Studies show that children benefit from gratitude with greater life satisfaction and a positive attitude about school. Gratitude increases our emotional intelligence and is worthy of our practice. When we think of things we are grateful for, we focus on the positive aspects of our lives. Research reveals that we don t have to find a reason to be grateful because merely looking for a reason changes our brain chemistry for the better. Gratitude makes our brains happy by releasing the neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine. The result is increased energy, optimism and empathy. Feelings of gratitude are associated with less frequent negative emotions and more frequent positive emotions such as feeling energized, alert and enthusiastic. Gratitude is associated with optimism. Research has determined that optimistic and grateful people are happier, less stressed and less depressed. In an effort to increase happiness, we will be practicing gratitude at school with all of our students. Over the past few years we have been spreading kindness by collecting Drops of Kindness. This year we will shift our focus to practicing gratitude by collecting Gratitude Drops! Children will write down what they are grateful for on a Drop. The Drops will be collected and displayed in our Library to inspire others to focus on gratitude.

3 We encourage you to practice gratitude at home with your children. Families practice gratitude in many different ways: Parents model an attitude of gratitude for their children; family members take turns sharing three blessings during dinner; parents tell their children why they are grateful for them; parents help children look on the bright side and find the good in a challenging situation. At school, we practice focusing on the positive by talking about what went well. When you ask your child about his or her day at school, ask What went well? This simple question will encourage your child to focus on all the good things that happened throughout the day. You may encourage your child to write letters of gratitude and keep a gratitude journal. The practice of putting positive thoughts in writing deepens the experience. It is not happy people who are thankful but thankful people who are happy. Our oldest daughter, Avery, has adjusted well to the new member, and is already hard at work training her on the nuances of various animal noises. 4 Messages From The Office Changes to the Immunization Law: Prior to August 2015 the law had been changed to re-name Religious Exemptions to a more general Non-Medical Exemption. The law was then changed again to allow schools to grandfather any Religious or Non-Medical Exemptions requested prior to 3/1/14. As of the end of August 2015, Oregon law changed again and those are no longer recognized by the State of Oregon. If this affects your family watch for a letter coming in the mail that provides specific instructions to guide you in updating your child s immunization records. This update is required to avoid the exclusion of your child from school this winter. Please contact your school nurse with any questions. WLWV Primary Strings Winter Concert is Wednesday, December 16th 7:00pm Wilsonville H.S. Auditorium WINTER WEATHER Snow routes are now available on the district website. School closure information will be available on the website as well. Please sign up for the flash alerts so you are informed of changes that can take place quickly. CHECK OUT THE COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD! Check this out! HELP! WE ARE OVERFLOWING WITH COATS! LOST AND FOUND Because of weather changes, lots of coats and sweaters are being left on the playground. The Lost and Found is overflowing. Please check the table in the hallway by the library when you are in the building and claim your items. Unclaimed items will be donated on December 16th.

5 Music Informances Third and fourth grade recorder "informances" are just around the corner! Students have been working diligently on recorder selecons such as Hot Cross Buns, Ode to Joy, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, and Auld Lang Syne. Students will also perform a few vocal tunes. These informal performances will be held in the library. Please come support our budding musicians! The schedule is listed in the calendar below.
