3 From the Nurse s Office Dear Parents, Please mark your calendars! We are busy planning a wonderful Parenting Program for you on Thursday, March 23 with fun raffles and free babysitting in the upper gym. More information to come soon! We are starting to see some flu cases at Burgess and it can be difficult for parents to determine it their children have a bad cold or flu. Colds are minor infections of the nose and throat caused by several different families of cold viruses. Children tend to get as many as 6-9 colds a year, with symptoms usually lasting a week to 10 days. They typically go away on their own, even without treatment. Cold symptoms have a gradual onset and are characterized by the following symptoms: low-grade fever, malaise, headache, watery eyes, runny nose with clear drainage, nasal and sinus congestion, sore or scratchy throat, decreased ability to taste or smell and a nonproductive cough. Influenza or flu is also a respiratory infection. It is caused by a strain of the influenza virus. These flu viruses cause symptoms that are more severe than cold symptoms. Typically, symptoms of the flu have a sudden onset and include the following: high fever, cough or sore throat, severe muscle aches, malaise, chills, headache, swollen glands, runny nose, nausea and vomiting. Attached is a guideline from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to help you to determine if your child has an influenza-like illness and if your child can attend school. Flu Symptom Check List for Families from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health To keep flu from spreading in the community it is important to keep your sick child at home when they are sick. SHOULD I KEEP MY CHILD HOME? Yes No Has your child had a fever of degrees or more in the past 24 hours? Yes No Does your child have a cough OR sore throat? If you answered YES to both questions above, keep your child home. Your child has an influenza-like illness. CAN MY CHILD RETURN TO SCHOOL? Yes No Has your child had a fever of degrees or more in the past 24 hours? Yes No Has your child had acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) in the past 24 hours? If you answered NO to both questions above, your child can return to school. If you answered YES to either one of the questions above, your child CANNOT return to school. Keep your child home for at least another day to observe for additional symptoms. Then use the check list questions again to decide whether you should continue to keep your child home. More information about influenza can be found on the Massachusetts Department of Public Health influenza website at mass.gov/flu. Please call your doctor with any questions. Thank you.
