2 1st Annual Dr. BRANCH LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA Lake Canyon Yacht Club Canyon Lake, TX July 4 & 5, 2014 Welcome to the South Central Texas Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! The Lake Canyon Yacht Club (LCYC) is pleased to announce its first ever Leukemia Cup Regatta. Donations will be used to fund life-saving blood cancer research and services for local patients. Registration information for the Regatta will be posted on the LCYC website as planning progresses. We will hold a two day regatta with one day devoted to a long distance race, and the other to buoys racing, most likely 3 races. The race committee will decide the morning of the first race day which component will be held day 1 to take full advantage of the wind forecast. As usual, trophies will be awarded by class for racing, with another set of trophies for those who raise the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; trophies will be given to race teams, virtual teams, and individual fundraisers. There will be a BBQ dinner for participants, volunteers and club members the evening of July 4th with plenty of fireworks around the lake to light things up. When you sign up, you 1l receive a personalized fundraising website and lots of fundraising resources. You can also earn prizes and incentives for all your hard fund raising work. Since its inception, The Leukemia Cup Regatta has raised millions of dollars for lifesaving research and patient services, bringing help and hope to patients and their families. Leukemia Cup events are held at yacht clubs across North America. Skippers register their boats and recruit friends and colleagues to help crew and to raise funds. Crew members seek donations from friends, family, co-workers and employers to sponsor their team boat. National and local event sponsors also support the Regatta. Cures today. Not someday. 3 The Mission is Critical Our Mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The History The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding research toward cures for blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and improving the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS was established in 1949 as the de Villiers Foundation, named in memory of Robert de Villiers who died of leukemia at the age of sixteen. LLS is made up of over 50 chapters in the United States and Canada. How Your Dollars Are Used Research At the end of fiscal year 2013, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has invested more than $875 million dollars in research, approximately $76.6 million in fiscal year 2012 alone. Programs like the Specialized Center of Research (SCOR), which brings together teams of scientists from different disciplines and our Translational Research Program, which funds research with a high probability of producing innovative patient treatments in an accelerated time frame, have directly contributed to many breakthrough cancer treatments. LLS funds between researchers around the world. Research funded by the Society has led or contributed to advances such as chemotherapy, bone marrow, stem cell transplantation and new, targeted oral therapies such as Gleevec. In addition, LLS funded research has been utilized in other types of cancer treatments, including breast, prostate, ovarian and gastrointestinal. Patient Services LLS provides a wide range of services to patients such as family support groups, a peer-support network, an extensive educational website with web chat support programs, free seminars and conferences, a toll-free information Resource Center staffed by Master-level nurses and social workers, and patient financial aid. Advocacy With more than 56,000 advocacy volunteers throughout the country, our voice is being heard by those responsible for legislation to fund blood cancer research and educational programs. Education LLS aims to serve as the world s foremost source of information on blood-related cancers. Programs include an Information Resource Center, (800) , an extensive collection of free educational materials, professional education and an evergrowing website. The Facts Every four minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Every ten minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. There are approximately 1,129,813 Americans living with, or in remission from, a blood cancer. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and adults under the age of 20. Lymphomas are the most common blood cancers and incidence increases with age. The survival rate for myeloma is only 44.9%. Incidence is more than twice as high in African Americans.

4 Campaign At-a-Glance The Concept The Leukemia Cup Regatta is a thrilling series of sailing events that combines the joy of boating with the important task of raising money to fight leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. Since its inception, The Leukemia Cup Regatta has raised more than $46 million for research and patient services. Leukemia Cup Regatta attracts sailors who already have a full, active lifestyle, but are looking for a way to get involved and make a difference while doing something they love. LCR not only motivates sailors to change their own lives, but gives them a way to make a difference in the lives of thousands of cancer patients and their families. The Texas Gulf Coast Leukemia Cup Regatta has raised over $2.5 million dollars for LLS since 1998! The Sailor Sailboat enthusiasts or those who like to watch from shore can participate in The Leukemia Cup Regatta. We invite anyone with an interest in sailing or boating and a passion about raising funds to cure cancer. Skippers register their boats and recruit friends and colleagues to help crew and raise funds. Crew members seek donations from friends, family, co-workers, and employers to sponsor their boat. Many supporters of Leukemia Cup Regatta are not sailors, and thus become virtual sailors, sticking strictly to fundraising and organizing events to raise funds for Fantasy Sail. Fantasy Sail Virtual and actual sailors participating in the Leukemia Cup Regatta can qualify for Fantasy Sail. An all weekend paid sailor s fantasy with Gary Jobson. This year, participants must raise and submit $10,000 or more by November I, 2014 in order to participate in the November 21-23, 2014 Fantasy Sail in Savannah, Georgia. The trip includes: Airfare for (1) person, 2 nights accommodations for (2) people in one room, Meals for (1) person and Participation in the Leukemia Cup Challenge (racing that weekend with Gary Jobson). The Campaign Goal The South Central Texas Chapter s 2014 Leukemia Cup Regatta s goal is $15,000 to fund LLS mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Why Fundraise? The Leukemia Cup Regatta gives sailors an opportunity to give back to the community while doing what they love - sailing. The campaign focuses on raising funds, awareness and advocacy in the fight against blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Over 78 cents of every dollar LLS spends is directed to mission driven programs such as cancer research, advocacy, education, and patient services. Plus, we have new incentives for this year!

5 Where The Funds Go $7500 Funds a program to educate 200 doctors on emerging treatments for a specific blood cancer. $3500 Funds a program to educate 70 nurses on emerging treatments for a specific blood cancer. $1000 $1000 $150 $500 $200 Provides one week s salary for a medical researcher at NIH, Johns Hopkins or GW who may discover key information for developing curative treatments for blood cancers. Makes possible one-on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team. Provides a patient with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma financial aid to support medical treatment and travel to medical appointments for one year. Provides 10 patients the opportunity to logon to a webcast and hear the latest information on treatment for their disease. Provides funding for a Family Support Group Program for one year where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members mediated by a trained facilitator. $150 Provides for 5 patients to make a First Connection with a trained peer volunteer patient/survivor. $100 Provides 3 patients access to an informational teleconference. $100 Helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures. $75 Covers the cost of one tissue typing test that is used to become a bone marrow donor. $50 Covers the cost of one CT scan. $40 $35 Covers the cost of sending a comprehensive support and informational packet to the family of a child with cancer. Provides transportation expenses for a patient living in South Central Texas to a comprehensive cancer center for treatment. $25 Covers the cost of one prescription co-payment.

6 Set UpYour Page Online Fundraising Quick Start Guide Step 1: Sign Into Your Fundraising Page Visit Enter the Username and Password that you received in the Welcome after registering to access your fundraising page. Once signed in, you can change your user name and password along with your profile information on the My Account tab. Step 2: Customize Your Page To get started on your fundraising page, click on the Personalize Pages tab. If you are a team captain, you can choose to customize the team page or your own page. Select Manage Posts in the dropdown then click the Edit link next to the item titled My Fundraising Page to customize the text and post photos that will display on your fundraising page. Select New Posts item in the dropdown to create New Posts about your fundraising and training progress so that visitors to your page can post comments. The Manage Comments item provides the ability to control what comments are to be displayed on your page. Select Options to modify how features of your fundraising page will be displayed, including changing the Title, page link, how your name is displayed and who you are sailing in honor / memory of. Be sure to click on Save after making any changes. To set a fundraising goal, click on Edit next to Personal Goal. Step 3: Send s After personalizing your fundraising page, import your contacts. Click on the Address Book tab. Select the system that you use under the Choose an Option next to Import address book. For Gmail, hotmail or Yahoo, enter your login information for your account and click on Import. Otherwise, choose the Microsoft Outlook option to import a commaseparated value (csv) file with your contacts to import. For any additional contacts, enter their First Name, Last Name and Address then click on the Add button Now, you re ready to send s to family, friends and co-workers. Click on Center tab, Compose . Click on the Address Book icon and select those to . Enter additional addresses separated by commas. Customize the Donation Request template or enter a new message in the Message box. Make sure that your message contains a link to your fundraising page so people can donate easily. Click on the Send button to send your . Your will be sent from your personal address with a link to your page, where people can make a donation and support your efforts. Making a donation is easy. In the Make a Donation section of your page, select or enter a donation amount and then click on the Donate Now button. Then complete the form with the payment information. Step 4: Updating Your Page Be sure to access your page often to check on donations, update your page s message and send additional donation requests. You can also send thank you s to those that have donated by going to the Center tab, Compose Message and selecting Thank-You Note in the Message Type option. Then, click on your Address Book icon and choose the Donors to be thanked option that will automatically select only those donors that you have yet to a thank-you note. Also, if you are part of a team, be sure to invite others to sail with you on your team by ing the Team Invitation Message Type to those who might be interested in joining you. They will receive an invitation with a link to the Leukemia Cup Regatta registration webpage and will automatically be added to your team after they complete their registration. Team Captains can also their team members easily by selecting the Team Captain Msg Message Type which will automatically place all of the team member addresses in to the To box. Just enter your message and click on Send to the team. Team Captains can also utilize the Team tab to view all of the contact information and funds raised for all members on the team. By clicking on the Team Captain Guide button, a Getting Started message along with downloadable reference materials are available to support the success of your team s fundraising efforts.

9 Fundraising Tips The Golden Rule of Rundraising... Just Ask! The most important part of fundraising is making a commitment to ask anyone you can think of who might want to support cancer research. Ask family, friends, co-workers and people in the community with whom you interact on a regular basis. Remember that you re not asking for yourself - but on behalf of thousands of cancer patients. You ll be surprised how willing most people are to contribute. Start Early and don t do this alone! Recruit strong crew members. Enlist your friends, neighbors, family members, and coworkers. Set a fundraising goal for yourself and your crew. Start the campaign by making a personal pledge! Online Fundraising: LLS is pleased to offer complimentary online fund raising webpage. It is a fast, free and easy way to reach a large group of people and raise money! Once you are registered you will receive an with a link to your webpage that you can personalize with photos and content. Write a letter and send it to your contact list. It is a great way to attract your donors and let them know the important reasons why you are fund raising. Remember: the more letters you send out, the more funds you will raise toward your goal! Follow up with your potential donors a week or two after you send your request to encourage them to help you in the fight against blood cancers. Check out the sample fundraising letter in this packet for ideas on how to formulate your own letter! Matching Gifts: Many corporations have matching-gift programs and will often match gifts given by you and other employees. Contact your human resources department for more information and ask your friends to do the same. This is an easy way to double or triple your money! Conduct a third party fundraising event to create more awareness. Bring new sponsors to the Regatta and get credit for it.
