District Governor s Message This was my report which I filed at the Multiple District in Halifax. Thank you to all Lions for what you have done for your District this year. I am proud of you all. We are into the last quarter of this Lions year with only one and a half months left, it has been a fabulous journey as we started out the year with many unknowns as to what would happen in our District. We had been asked by our International President Joe Preston to Strengthen The Pride and we have been doing an excellent job with that challenge. We have exceeded the expectations that were set by International at the beginning of the year. Our district has increased by one brand new club and our membership has a net growth of 34 members and by the end of the month we will have a few more members. We were very fortunate this year to have such a group of dedicated Zone Chairs to help in all aspects of our clubs. I challenged all the Zone Chairs to qualify for the new awards that were introduced by President Joe Preston and they have qualified for the first three quarters and I was pleased to be able to present them at the convention in Gander. I have no doubt that all ten of our zone chairs will continue to do their great work and qualify for the final quarter awards before the end of the year. All Lions help is needed especially for the four quarter awards and if your zone chairperson qualifies for the four paw status they will receive the prestigious International Leadership Award. It would be great to see all ten zone chairs receive their award at the Marystown Convention in October I do not know if it has been done before in our District. The work that you have done in your clubs this year resulted in your District receiving a Lions Pride Award and we are the only district in our Multiple District to receive it for the first half of the year. This year we have lost 29 great Lions who have completed their life journey and we will honor them at our Necrology Service at our Multiple District convention in Halifax. They were great leaders who began like us by offering our service to our fellowman. Some were members for a long time others for not as long but we need to remember that they all did what they could for Lionism and we will try to keep doing the things they did to serve their community. We thank all of them for the work they did over the years. We were able to increase our retention this year as we only lost 58 members from our clubs. Some were transferred to other areas as they had moved due to work or be closer to family. We have inducted 111 new Lions in our District this Lions year and I will be personally inducting 5 new Lions next week. We have 21 clubs qualified for the Club Excellence Award as of this date and another 5 or 6 clubs which will be able to qualify as soon as their new members are inducted. We currently have a net increase of 36 in membership this year. We need to take steps now to fill all of the positions in our clubs for next year. Most Clubs have had their election of officers. Please consider offering your help to your club by taking a little more active role. One of the things you need to be aware of it that you are never alone in your club. Our clubs are like our homes and our families where we all share the joys, sorrows and trials and tribulations, but at the end of the meeting or the day we all find peace and tranquility as we are all together in the service of Lionsim (DG Len s Message continues on the following page.) Page 2

District Governor s Message (continued from previous page) We have worked hard this year to increase our membership and to provide service to our communities. It has paid great dividends for us. We are proud of what we were able to accomplish this year. We have formed a new service club in the town of Torbay and we currently have 27 members who are charter members and we expect to grow that number over the next few months. All clubs were asked to look at the prospects of funding white canes to the CNIB and all clubs accepted the challenge for the next four years and all have donated the cost of at least two canes this year. We found out that the Agnes Cowan Hostel in St John s which was built in the 1970 s had 98 rooms which did not have a television in them and consequently patients who were sick and not able to go to the general lounge had to stay in their room and look at the four grey walls that surrounded them. The Agnes Cowan Hostel serves all residents of Newfoundland who have to have surgery for various reasons and people from many areas of the province have to stay there for up to six or eight weeks. We asked the Lions of District N3 for their support for the purchase of a television to be put into all of the rooms and they responded with their support. Many clubs were able to donate one television while others were able to donate more. The cable company will be installing the cable at no charge which saves the hospital over $ 100,000. Approximate value of the project will be impossible to place a dollar value on due to what it will do for the benefit of those having to stay in the rooms while recovering from surgery. The estimated cost of televisions will be in the 30 to 40 thousand dollar value. We want to thank all Lions clubs in Newfoundland. It shows us that by working together in the spirit of Lionism so much can be done that would be impossible to do by working alone. We have teamed up with Team Broken Earth ( a program which was started by a few doctors in Newfoundland ) to go to Hati in October and work with a Lions Club there to distribute eyeglasses to needy individuals - children and adults. We are hoping this will be a continous project which will enrich the lives of people of Haiti. It is hoped that with the involvement of Team Broken Earth and Lions Clubs the knowledge will be attained to establish an eye surgery clinic in that country.we are working with the Multiple District to find the best method of establishing an eyeglass collection and distribution center and we are teaming with correctional institutes for the collection and cleaning of eyeglasses. We have worked together as a team to get these projects started and we know that by working together we will find fulfillment in these projects and any other we envision. We are trying to expand our Lions clubs and we are working towards that goal. Strengthen the Pride in your self and in your club, embrace all the challenges that come your way, adopt new attitudes and be ready to accept new challenges as we move forward in our futures. Embrace and practice our motto WE SERVE and we will all be winners and we truly know why you help others. It is only because WE CARE. Page 3

Message from 2nd Vice-District Governor Sam Wells MD Coordinator N3 and N4 for GMT Fellow Lions, Another year has almost passed us by; every year seems to slip by faster than the previous year, but the things a Lion has to do still have to be done. This year I feel was a rewarding year for our District and for me. This year we formed a new club in Torbay, the FIRST CLUB in a COMMUNITY in over 20 years. I am pleased to say I had a hand in getting this done, along a great group of Lions - District Governor Len, Lion Janine Howse, and the whole Pouch Cove Lions Club who are their sponsors. All came to completion on May 2 nd 2015, when the first Charter Night was held at the Pouch Cove Lions Club, with many dignitaries in attendance and over 125 guests. We now look forward to good things from this club and they are well on their way with projects. I attended the MD Convention and VDG training in Halifax, NS from May 20 th 2015 to May 24 th As you know, this is my second time as VDG and I can say that the training process has improved greatly from my first sessions over 10 years ago. And even though some people think I am untrainable (lol), I did learn a few things and I really am looking forward to next year as your 1 st VDG and the following year as your District Governor. In attendance, besides me from our District were PCC Frank Antle, 2VDG (E) Diane Bonnell and Lion Terry Clarke from Gander. The Convention was fairly well attended for the business sessions with estimates around 175 to 200. The Banquet Saturday Night had approximately 150 in attendance. Next year, the Convention will be held in St. John s at the Capital Hotel. I think we should all make an effort to attend these meetings. There is usually a lot fun and fellowship and there are certainly things you can learn. Our own PCC Frank Antle was elected as the chair for the MD Constitution and Bylaws Committee we all wish him well. We know a great job will be done. I had two reasons to be at the convention this year 1) training 2) as Multiple District GMT Coordinator for N3 and N4 The report for GMT was very positive for both districts N3 was showing an increase of 16 members and they formed a new club. DG Cyril Simmons has been stressing the need to ASK ONE and it seems to be working Our own District also showed an increase of over 26 members, even though we had 28 great Lions pass away. We too formed a new club and we know that the ASK ONE campaign has been front and centre in our District. Further to that, as the Coordinator I have had the opportunity to attend a GMT/GLT Summit in Winnipeg this past December and I was privy to a lot of information. The GMT/GLT concept will be around for some time and all over the world progress is being seen in membership growth and new leaders coming forth. I suggest that your clubs look into how you can benefit from these programs. If help is needed in our District regarding membership, the District Coordinator is Lion Ed Browne from the Bay Roberts club. If there is anything we can do, do not hesitate to contact either of us. We would be happy to help. (Lion Sam s Message is continued on the following page.) Page 5

Message from 2nd Vice-District Governor Sam Wells MD Coordinator N3 and N4 for GMT (continued from previous page) From the Summit and two Webinars a lot of ideas have come to us for consideration. One was that the Zone Chairs have to become proactive with the program and ensure all their clubs know what is happening regarding GMT/GLT. But the most important and probably the idea that will cause our districts to increase membership and create more leaders is a test program to be started hopefully in the new Lions year. The concept is to add to the Zone two captains, one each for GMT/GLT. This will relieve the Zone Chair from some duties and have these people keep everyone informed of new concepts and ideas from the GMT/GLT teams. This will be only a test in some areas and will be starting soon. When I know the test areas I will let you know where they are and update you when new information is available. (For your information I have included, on the following page, the concept of captains for your study and feedback, let me know the good, bad and ugly of the plan.) I am looking forward to the next two years and if you feel I can help your Club or your Zone, do not hesitate to call me at the numbers below. Yours in Lionism, Lion Sam

Message from District GMT Chair Lion Ed Brown Hello Fellow Lions, Since my last report I attended a joint meeting with Zone One and Two in Gambo. It was very good meeting and thank you for your invitation. Next time my speech will be shorter lol. The Bay Roberts Lions Club inducted two new member May 26. Community 5 will be inducting 5 new members June 1st. I was happy to attend Community 5 Charter Night, and say a few words. I am looking forward to being there for the inductions on June 1st. We are attempting to have a workshop or meetings with Musgrave Harbour and Green s Harbour to help grow their clubs. The GMT is always available to do anything we can to help clubs. Please let me know of any growth or activities you have coming up. On another note, Bugs and Debbie Greene are doing shows at various Lions Clubs. Clubs get 30% plus 50/50. This is easy money if you re interested. Have a great summer all! Yours in Lionism, Lion Ed GMT Chair Page 7

From My Files on Leadership: Lion Herbert M. Burry, PCC Thirteen Mistakes Brigadier General S.L.A. Marshall started out in life as a newspaperman, eventually working for the Detroit News. Upon America's entry into World War II, he was given a commission as a major and was assigned to the Army Historical Section. His studies of World War II combat began in the Pacific, where he covered the landings on Makin Island and Kwajalein. After a battle on Makin, he asked the survivors questions about their experience in combat, which he referred to as the "after-action interview." After his work in the Pacific, Marshall interviewed those who fought in Europe, becoming chief historian of the European Theater of Operations. His experience and the evidence he amassed provided the basis for his pioneering and most controversial book, Men Against Fire, which was published in In his 1966 book, The Officer as a Leader, he shared thirteen mistakes leaders should avoid that are worth considering: 1. To attempt to set up your own standard of right and wrong. 2. To try to measure the enjoyment of others by your own. 3. To expect uniformity of opinions in the world. 4. To fail to make allowance for inexperience. 5. To endeavor to mold all dispositions alike. 6. Not to yield on unimportant trifles. 7. To look for perfection in our own actions. 8. To worry ourselves and others about what can't be remedied. 9. Not to help everybody wherever, however, whenever we can. 10. To consider impossible what we cannot ourselves perform. 11. To believe only what our finite minds can grasp. 12. Not to make allowances for the weaknesses of others. 13. To estimate by some outside quality, when it is that within which makes the man. Page 10

Goulds Lions Club Hosts Purina Dog Guide Walk In Memory of Lion Doug Harvey Lions, family members and friends who participated in the Walk, held on May 31, 2015, in front of the St. Kevin s High School, where the walk started. The walk ended at Goulds Lions Club. Goulds Lions Club raised $ 2, at our recent Dog Guide walk, held in memory of Lion Doug Harvey. Lion Doug was an active member of our Lions Club for 36 years. He served as Treasurer, Secretary, twice as President and Zone Chairperson. He was President in 2004, when our Leo Club was formed. Lion Doug helped with all projects, but was most known for calling Bingo and participating in our Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guide Walk. Doug was extremely busy with family and work commitments, but he always made time to help with our Lions projects. He was the recipient of the Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowship Award and the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest awards given to volunteer Lions members. This money raised through this walk will be donated to our Lion Foundation of Canada. Their Dog Guide programs assist Canadians with a medical or physical disability, by providing them with Dog Guides at no cost. Dog Guides profoundly impact the lives of those with disabilities, improving their safety, mobility and independence. Goulds Lions Club, has made an additional commitment to the Lions Foundation of Canada. We pledged to raise $12,000 over the next 3 years, to sponsor an Autism Assistance Dog Guide. The Autism Assistance Dog Guides helps families and children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Helping children aged 3 to 18 years of age, Autism Assistance Dog Guides provide safety, companionship and unconditional love. These Dog Guides provide a calming relief for children in high anxiety situations and reduce the stress commonly experienced in public places. The bond that develops between the Dog Guide and child allows for increased social interaction for the family and the child. The Dog Guide we are sponsoring, will be named Dougie after our deceased member, Lion Doug Harvey. Page 20
