A J PO BOX 127 Lilydale Vic 3140 Chartered 23 rd August 1965 Incorporated 2 nd August 1988 Ph: contact@rotarylilydale.org.au President Bill Parlet Foundation Bryan McCarthy Past President Delwyn Ellis Community Ann Wheeler Secretary Helen McDonald International Trish Condon Treasurer Margi Sank Membership on Haines Administration Jenny Hill Vocation Des Shiel President Elect TBA Youth Ian Darvell BULLETIN Dinner Meeting Tuesday 12 th December, 2017 President s Corner It is December, summer is coming, Christmas is nearly upon us and social events are numerous. I am sure that everyone is like me with the feeling of where did the year go so suddenly? Surely time is speeding up because when I was a child each year seemed to last a lifetime. Now it is closer to being a blink. And this is all happening just when I want to make the most of each minute of my remaining years. Nevertheless, life is good and I just need to remind myself to take every opportunity to savour it. Madalyn and I have been away since the last Board meeting (20/11) visiting East Timor to conduct a pilot Hearing Health workshop with Timorese nursing and midwifery university students. We believe the program was successful based on the positive comments from students and uni staff alike. The 15 students were split evenly between males and females, and all were in their last year of a six-year undergraduate degree program. The average age was around 26 years. Although all spoke some English, we conducted the teaching with an interpreter using Tetum. Our interpreter was a otarian from the C Dili Lafaek which has an all Timorese membership. Already we have had feedback from some students via and they express a desire to start using their new knowledge about hearing loss prevention in young children. It is our hope to keep providing training to health science students about to enter the workforce and perhaps look at a similar program with student teachers. While we were away, we received news from the home front regarding a successful boot sale. Well done everybody and I believe plans are already being made for something bigger and better next year. We had planned to be back for the December LCPM (Markets) on Sunday 3/12 but the vagaries of Timorese air service prevented that. However, hats off to the market committee for managing to operate a smaller market in spite of poor weather conditions (based on our luck with the weather this year we should never consider making a living from gambling). I attended the Yarra Hills Secondary College awards night and presented the award for Community Leadership to Molly Dickson. I was also given the opportunity to speak briefly to the students and parents about otary and volunteering. Next week I will be attending Mount Lilydale Mercy College to present several citizenship/service awards. I enjoy these opportunities to demonstrate otary s support for our community s youth and to reward community service. Finally, I want to thank three people in our club who have stepped up and volunteered for management positions on next year s Board. on Haines is now our President Elect as well as continuing as Membership Chair; Jenny Selway will be next year s Treasurer and Ann McCarthy will be our club Secretary. Thank you to all three members and may I wish them the best of luck for a great Yours in otary, Bill Parlet

ALL members and Friends of otary (spouses and the like) are required to hold one. It s easy to forget that picking up old furniture from a school, presenting school prizes, volunteering at the market, etc, brings us into contact with children. Obligations under the WWC check are now more onerous following government changes this year. A WWC check for volunteers is free and is current for 3 years. Go to (or google Working With Children Check Vic) and fill in the online application. Notification of your check should be sent to the Club Protection Officer, otary Club of Lilydale Inc, PO BOX 127 Lilydale Vic 3140 (you will be asked for this information on the application).

5 BOAD EPOT DECEMBE 2017 MAKET DATE: 3 December 2017 No. of Stalls: 29 No. of New Stalls: 3 No. of Stalls Cancelled: 24 all in the days leading up to the market. 2 stall holders did not turn up and did not cancel Gate Takings: $ Stall Holder Fees: $ Total Banked: $1, What should have been the biggest market of the year, with 52 stalls confirmed, turned into a fizzer due to the wet weather. It was very disappointing for the committee, stall holders, volunteers and the public. The rain mainly held off and was fairly light. There were no issues with flooding or overly wet ground. Tim, as Father Christmas, arrived on a fire truck at omany s granddaughter, Ebony, handed out bags of lollies. Both were very well received. The mood at the market was up despite the bad weather. The committee agreed to give each stall holder a $10 discount to thank them for their loyalty throughout the year. This was much appreciated. The following was sent to us from one of our stall holders: Hi omany, I didn t get a chance to speak to you today while we were packing p but I really wanted to thank you and everyone else at otary for the excellent market that you run. Always so well organised and every time an absolute pleasure to attend. Have a great Christmas and New Year and we will see you in February. Jeanine and Jasslyn Lewis-James

6 Jude, Delwyn and I had great pleasure today attending olling Hills Primary School to present 2nd grade student Jack Scott with a otary Junior Community Award. Jack won the award for his work around school and the fact he is very community minded, always helping others. Jack has a keen interest in science and the environment - recently he was recognised by the Melb Zoo for raising $109 for the endangered Northern Corroboree Tree frog. (Not bad for a eight year old boy. Jack was awarded a otary certificate and a $50 gift voucher. Well done Jack.
