First of all "where has the year gone"? I can't believe it's almost over. Secondly thank you to everyone who has worked tirelessly to make this alts 12 months run so smoothly. (As I prepare to hand over to Bryan I have no doubt that this coming Rotary year will be even better than any of us could imagine as I know we are in safe hands with early preparations well in hand.)thirdly I am asking myself what have I learnt over the last year and it goes something like this. Having been in Rotary for 28 years and on a couple of occasions been a committee chairperson I still had limited understanding of how a Rotary club works and functions. I have always been a regular attender at which ever club I have been a member of but rarely got into the finer detail. I have had an eye opening experience and will not forget quickly some of my lessons learnt. Once again thank you to everyone who has made this past Rotary year so good and I wish the Rotary Club of Lilydale every success in reaching 50 for 50, and yes let's continue to "Light up" Light Up Rotary Yours in Rotary, Steve contact@rotarylilydale.org.au www. rotarylilydale.org au Chartered: 23 rd Aug 1965, Incorporated: 2 nd Aug Registered No.: A ABN. : THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK WE LEARN ABOUT THE ROPES OF LIFE BY UNTYING ITS KNOTS. 4 The project has now been running for 3 years and we have provided 10 young students with quality, secondary school boarding sponsorships to date. The students are thriving and we are so excited for the future of not only these current students, but of the many more to come! If you are available, I would absolutely love to have you there again on the 14th August. From Kalori, the Bulletin of the Rotary Club of Bayswater After such a successful event in 2014, raising almost $10,000, we hope to be able to achieve something similar again this year! I would really appreciate it if you might consider sharing this flyer among the Rotary club, as well as friends and family - The more the merrier! All details and how to book are on the attached flyer. Kindest Regards, Ester Rijk rijkester@gmail.com ROTARY IN ACTION LYDIA DOS SANTOS. Our beautiful visitor from East Timor has certainly been busy! Lidia has been studying English at RMIT for four weeks now. She has been commuting each day to Melbourne by train. In her spare time she has been attending Rotary meetings, visiting the Zoo, milking cows and playing with her new dog friend, Bonnie. She has been lunching with friends who have volunteered at Bairo Pite Clinic Lidia is making the most of her stay and will be walking in the Age Fun Run for East Timor Hearts in July. If you would like to donate to Lidia's fun run please go to this link PICTURED Lydia with Jenny Selway, present Barry Vickers with banner and scarf from the Rotary Club of Dili. At last week's meeting, we were treated to one of the most interesting and engaging talks I've heard in a long time. Lidia Santos, our guest from the Bairo Pite Clinic in Timor Leste, shared with us the story of her work with malnourished children. Along with Jenny Selway from the Rotary Club of Lilydale, Lidia described her work with the malnourished children of Dili as her passion - and it was clear to everyone present that it is. Lidia revealed that the parents of East Timorese children have a very poor understanding of nutrition, living mainly on potato and rice. So one of the greatest challenges in such a poor country is to educate children and their parents so that their improved health once released from the clinic is sustained. With around 1000 malnourished children being helped by the clinic since January this year, that's an on-going issue, especially when there are few industries and very little opportunity for employment. Many Timorese are subsistence farmers. For a person who has come to Australia to improve her English, not a word of Lidia's talk was lost on the audience. Furthermore, the interest in Lidia's story and the quality of her presentation can be gauged from the number and range of questions she was asked.
5 As I indicated, we will continue to work with Jenny Selway and the Rotary Club of Lilydale to explore other avenues for assisting Lidia in her work. Barry Vickers President RC Bayswater. gets worse as we move away from the capital, Kathmandu, to the villages and remote areas. For more information please go to your District 9810 Newsletter Highlights Money raised as of the 16th June was $6, District Stamp Fund Your District Stamp Fund needs used stamps - we have had to ring around for supplies lately!! Any stamps will do, high value and foreign varieties bring in the most dollars. This is a diminishing resource so let us use it while we can, it will not cost you a cent but will hopefully improve the lives of the less fortunate amongst us. Many thanks to those who saved stamps which are forwarded to Carol Farmer who sells them. Carol has been doing this for a number of years. This Rotary year Philatelic Garbology has raised $6381. $3000 will go to the Kathy Freeman Foundation and provide 3 Koori scholarships, and $3381 will provide eye operations through the Fred Hollows Foundation. Since Carrol started selling stamps she has raised $89,212! Please keep the stamps coming in. For more information, consult the Directory or contact Carrol Farmer. From PDG Patrick Hartley. Nepal Earthquake Appeal ROTARY FELLOWSHIP WEEKEND The Rotary Fellowship Weekend was held over the weekend of June th in Bendigo. Bendigo proved to be the ideal venue for our weekend away with great accommodation, food, a glass of wine or two and of course great fellowship. All managed to arrive by Friday evening and quickly settled into a relaxed state (particularly after a glass or two). Saturday evening worked out perfectly with the in house catering. We welcomed several of our first time attendees with our usual presentation. Some items of entertainment were well received, especially Bill and Madalyn's duet. Helen Mc and Ann provided their interpretation on the old magic match trick. Over the weekend we visited the local Farmer's Market, Post Office tour, the Great Stuppa at Eaglehawk, the talking tram, several coffee shops, Art Gallery and of course Balgownie winery for a little tasting or two. Sunday evening we had a lovely meal at the Boundary Hotel. Monday morning after a leisurely breakfast it was time to head for home with some great memories of another great weekend. Helen & Ian Darvel Sha Rijal is a member of the Rotary Club of Clayton. Recently her country Nepal was struck by a massive 7.9 earthquake wrenching a terrible loss of life and leaving millions of survivors without proper shelter, food and water. Unfortunately, the relief efforts have been slow in the wake of this disaster. The situation
