1 Rotary Club of Lilydale Inc. A J PO BOX 127 Lilydale Vic 3140 Chartered 23 rd August 1965 Incorporated 2 nd August 1988 Ph: contact@rotarylilydale.org.au President Bill Parlet Foundation Bryan McCarthy Past President Delwyn Ellis Community Ann Wheeler Secretary Helen McDonald International Trish Condon Treasurer Margi Sank Membership Ron Haines Administration Jenny Hill Vocation Des Shiel President Elect TBA Youth Ian Darvell BULLETIN Dinner Meeting Tuesday 24 th October 17 Our next dinner meeting on the 24 th of this month will be a special occasion. Norm Bruce, the manager of the East Timor Roofing and Training Project in Baucau, Timor-Leste, will be retiring after many years of dedicated service in helping the people of East Timor. Norm, along with one of the key Timorese workers at ETR, Osorio De Jesus, will be visiting our club as part of their business trip to Australia. Our own Tim Hewitt, who sits on the Rotary ETR Board, has organised for some of Norm s many Australian friends and supporters to join us on the night. To mark this special occasion, our club is bestowing an Honorary Membership on Norm. We will also present Osorio with a Friend of Rotary certificate. Tim says that you are welcome go to his home after the meeting for a further chat with our visitors. Our Board is very concerned about the on-going vacancy for President Elect. The first of the important district training programs starts in November. We need one of you to volunteer to be our next president and to do it now so that you do not miss out on essential training. The Board wants everyone to know that this important position will be given support at every turn. Now is the time to step forward to help your club. Our District Governor, Malcolm Chiverton, has recently reminded all clubs about two major projects that are aimed at improving the health of people both here in Australia and around the world. The first is Trachoma 20/20 which hopes to raise enough money to seriously reduce the eye disease of trachoma which is endemic in parts of northern Australia, especially amongst indigenous Australians. This disease can be treated effectively in its early stages with medication, improved hygiene and regular health checks. The other disease is malaria which kills over half a million people worldwide each year, many of them children and pregnant women and could be prevented by an effective vaccine. The Malaria Vaccine Project is sponsored by Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM). More information on both of these projects can be found on the District website. Des Shiel, chairman of our Vocational Service committee, tells me he will be attending the district vocational seminar this coming Friday (27 th ) evening, 7-9pm. It promises to be an exciting free seminar to explain the potential value hidden in this no-so-well understood aspect of Rotary service. Let Des know if you would like to join him at the Glen Waverley Community Centre. Lastly don t forget the ten-pin bowling social night, 7-9pm, on Tuesday 31 st October (Halloween!!) Should be great fun. Mindi and Delwyn assure me that skill and experience are not required, just bring your enthusiasm (+$10). Yours in Rotary President s Corner Bill Parlet
