Looking back over the last month of the year, Lilydale Rotarians were busy. We had the last Farmers Market for the year with Father Christmas visiting, a great day for members on Sunday 20th celebrating Christmas and fellowship, and then there was the Bunnings BBQ, a hot day for slaving over a BBQ but the team survived and given it was a hot day on New Years Eve we still raised a good amount. Our membership committee has also been working hard to raise the profile and opportunities Rotary offer, we may yet achieve 50 members for our 50th year. What does 2016 have for us? The next few months promise to be busy. Review of the Farmers Market will be completed and presented to the Board and then members for consideration. The Board supports a request from Ian Darvall to do a working bee at Lilydale Youth Club. Following a very successful 50th celebrations' the Board is supporting a group of members to archive the Clubs history and memorabilia, this is important as we do not record our achievements well, I guess we are to busy just getting on with it. The other project I would like to start is a BBQ trailer, we have talked about it now it's time to start it. All of this over the next few months as well as the normal Rotary things we do promises to be a great year for our Club, I hope you find it as exiting and interesting as I do. BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD Yours in Rotary, Bryan THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK MY PRAYER FOR 2016 IS A FAT BANK ACCOUNT AND A THIN BODY. I GOT IT WRONG LAST YEAR. 3 FATHER CHRISTMAS VISITS CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY Father Christmas arrived at the Club Christmas party on the Lilydale Fire Brigade fire truck, much to the delight of the children present and members. The photos below capture the interest of the children. Unfortunately, Tim Hewitt arrived too late to be greeted by father Christmas. ROTARY SCHOOL PRIZES On Monday night December 14th, Madalyn and Bill Parlet represented the Club at the Mt Lilydale Mercy College end of year prize night. We presented the three Rotary awards centred on community and service. The winners were: Yr 9 Rotary Award for Citizenship = Lilian Pagels Yr 11 Rotary Award for Community = Elyse Schoch Yr 12 Rotary award for Service = Ben Morison The young girl excepting the award from Madalyn Parlet is Elyse Schoch. Bill Parlet BUNNINGS BBQ 31 st DECEMBER 2015 A big thank you to our members who provided support on the day for the Bunnings BBQ, 31 st December, on what was a very hot and humid day. Rod BUSST, Des SHIEL, Peter LOOSLEY, Helen McDONALD, Margi & Peter SANK, Phil HERRY, Sharon CHUCK, Anne Van HORICK, Bryan McCARTHY, and Bill PARLET all participated with a sense of fun and enthusiasm. Support was also offered by many of you who weren t available but offered encouragement, or to assist if we needed extra help; your offers and encouragement are appreciated and, in the run up to any event, it always helps to know that your support is there. So I offer my thanks to Geoff WELSH, Ian DARVELL, Ron HAINES, Ann

4 Wheeler, Tim HEWIT, Dianne JOCHETZ, Jenny SLEWAY, Delwyn ELLIS and Mindi & Brad. The sales on the day were slow to start, with a rush in the middle of the day, and then we had a very slow close. That meant that we had ample time to set-up and were cleaned up by 4:20. It was quite hot the whole day but especially so around the lunch rush. I think we ve helped Phil with the terrific effort he s making to reduce his weight he must of sweated off quite a bit over the BBQ! Of course drinks were appreciated and many people wanted bottles of water. Now, if my figures are correct (I will bank tomorrow so then get confirmation of my accuracy), I think we cleared $ We also have remaining 3 pkts sausages (72 frozen) and 3.5kgs onions (sliced and frozen) at a cost value of $ That will start us off for the Farmer s Market in February with potential earnings of a further $ (as we get the bread donated by Ponti s Bakery at the Market). I had hoped that we d have earned a lot more during this festive time but you needed to be there on the day to see just how quiet it was at Bunnings. Perhaps it was a combination of the heat and especially of people being away after Xmas. Whatever, this is bonus income as it s an additional day Bunnings offered us in Again, my thanks and appreciation to you for your support with a terrific effort. Regards, Madalyn PARLET Chair, Community Committee, Rotary Club Lilydale CLARE BROWN, OUTBOUND EXCHANGE STUDENT NOVEMBER REPORT from Brescia Vittoria Alata, 2050 Lombardy, Italy November has been a very busy month for me. It s still autumn here, however it feels like winter has already begun. The other day I walked to school when it was -1 degrees. It s safe to say that the thick coat and abundance of scarves have been well put to use. Daylight savings has kicked in meaning that it is getting darker at about 5 in the afternoon, sometimes before. Despite this making the whole place seem a little drearier, I like to think that it s just an excuse for the nightlife to begin earlier. Which it certainly has for me as my social calendar has been all but filled up this month with all sorts of different events, including: Halloween, my schools end of year party and visiting some of my best exchange friends. I finally got to make my speech about Australia to Rotary, which I think went rather well. The club however seemed very badly informed about the subject of youth exchange and the fact that I had been here since January. I think however, in the following week when I went to another meeting, coincidently about how to make Rotary more engaging to a younger audience (which might I add was 4 hours long), I made enough of an appearance to make up for it. The following weekend I visited my favourite South African, Georgina, at Crema and got to attend a meeting of her Rotaract Club. The club itself was quite accommodating and I think the night went well apart from the unwanted, surprise speech given on how to make Rotaract more engaging to a younger audience (that s right, I somehow managed to get myself into sitting through two, ridiculously long speeches about exactly the same thing, all in the space of four days. Brava Clare!). I did at least get to meet some nice people and when the meeting finished went out into the Centre with my friend. The following day I went to Lerici with Georgina and her host parents. Lerici is a gorgeous little beach town which is a part of the Cinque Terre. After exploring the place in the morning, Georgina, her host dad and I took our last swim in Italy; which I am quite sure surprised a lot of onlookers as it was about 10 degrees out and most had their coats on. Once dried off we all sat on the beach and ate the local foccias which were most definitely scrumptious.

5 The last weekend of November all of the exchangers went to Cremona for the festival of Torrone, which is a tradition Italian sweet made up of nougat, often with almonds or walnuts. I did give it a go but while it wasn t too bad, it s neither going on my top Italian foods list. The day was lovely and I got to catch up with not only my district but some of the others and it was a nice way to say goodbye to some of those that I unfortunately won t be able to see again before I leave. We have also managed to sort out our Rotary district jumpers and will get them the week we leave. This last month for me I expect shall be one of the busiest with Christmas, New Years as well as me trying to catch up and say goodbye to everyone. I had better also start thinking about packing (how scary), I have no idea how I will fit everything inside my suitcase. I guess this will be the last of my monthly reports as well, as by the time December is due I will be there to give it in person. So for now have a nice holiday, a merry Christmas and a happy new year from me in Italy. See you soon. Clare Brown ALICE MABIN - Guest Speaker Rotary Club of Healesville Stuart McDonald, Rotary Club of Healesville has extended an invitation to our Club to listen to Alice Mabin who will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Healesville on 28th January Alice is a most interesting character Stuart notes, he has spoken to her a number of times over the past few months as she has meandered her way down south driving cattle from Queensland. She's almost here now. From the dot points on the attached flyer she is well qualified to speak on any number of topics, such as photography, motivation or this big brown country we call home. Details of the meeting are: Date: Thursday January 28th 2016 Time: 6-00pm for 6-30pm; Start 8-00pm; finish Venue: Sanctuary House Resort Motel 326 Badger Creek Road Healesville 3777 Seats will be limited so please book your numbers early and no later than January 20th The cost is $28 per head. Contact Stuart McDonald, stuhoo2000@yahoo.com.au or Mob: HANSARD REPORT 50 th CLUB ANNIVERSARY Christine Fyffe MLA for Evelyn reported to Parliament as recorded in Hansard 8th December, her attendance at the Rotary Club of Lilydale s 50th Anniversary celebration. It is great to see our local member of Parliament recognizing our Clubs contribution to the community locally and internationally in such a public way in the State Parliament of Victoria. Thanks to Christine.

6 DECEMBER FARMERS MARKET CUSHION STALL A big thank you for the cushion stall helpers at the Club's December Farmers Market. Diane Jochetz and Jude Haines, both worked all day on the stall. Ron Haines and Robert Chuck came to the rescue when FATHER CHRISTMAS AT THE FARMERS MARKET The last Farmers Market for 2015 had a special visitor who arrived via the Mt Evelyn fire truck. Father Christmas included a visit the Farmers Market in his very busy schedule leading up to Christmas Day. He brought with him Christmas cheer, good will and small treats for the children and adults. He even had Christmas socks to show he was really in the Christmas spirit. Can you guess who Father Christmas is? asked if they would be able to pick up the cushions from Tim s with the ute. They were at Tim s at 6.30am, this saved Tim and I from doing the loading. Robert, Ron and I set up the tables and cushions and then the girls took over. Mindi Steel, Club Administration Director CARPET ROLLS FOR ETR The photos taken by Des Shiel show two large rolls of used carpet for our Club Rotary East Timor Roofing project, Baucau, East Timor. They will be used by laying them on the concrete floor for the manufacture of all sized steel water tanks and grain silos. Also chairs were loaded loaded and delivered to DIK by Des Shiel and Robert Chuck. This was the last load for the year which would be considered a record amount of aid materials for The steel legs and the timber top tables originally made and built by Rotarian Bruce Watts R/C Lilydale deceased who owned and operated Weldcraft Industries.
