Firstly, there is our Comedy Dinner with the popular Dave O Neill. It will be held Saturday night 28 th April at St Patrick s Hall.

I find this weather very invigorating, which is a good thing because the club has a busy time coming up. Firstly, there is our Comedy Dinner with the popular Dave O Neill. It will be held Saturday night 28 th April at St Patrick s Hall. Enjoy a cabaret performer singing French songs, a catered meal with BYO drinks, followed by many laughs with Dave. Invite all your family and friends, at just $60 pp it is great value. The big French Getaway Raffle will be drawn during the evening. I ve got my fingers crossed that someone in the club will be the lucky winner of a flight for two to Paris and a week s accommodation in a 3-bedroom house in an old village in the south of France. Please get out there and sell as many of these tickets as you can in the meantime. All proceeds, after expenses from both the raffle and the dinner, are going to our club s Hearing Health Timor-Leste project. If you need more raffle tickets or comedy night tickets please contact Madalyn or Sharon. Ian Darvell has informed me that his Youth Committee are starting the wheels moving in regards to having a Rotary Youth Exchange student sponsored by our club. If you would like to be a host family for 2-3 months sometime in the year, please speak to Ian soon. We only have a short time period to get requirements in place or the club may miss out. Talk to someone who has been a host of an exchange student and find out how rewarding the experience can be. I recently wrote to Nicole Wong who was the student we supported to attend the National Science camp some time ago. Nicole is now in her first year of dentistry at La Trobe University in Bendigo. Nicole has a future goal of helping children who have been born with deformities to their mouth and jaw. I was pleased to inform Nicole that the club is giving her $500 to help her get started with her studies. Hopefully she will have the opportunity to give us all an update on her progress later in the year. Your Board also approved a $500 donation to the BJ Quilters club. These quilters provide patchwork quilts to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for cancer patients. Last year they provided 62 quilts and in 2018 have already completed 30. However, they are short of supplies and asked for financial support, which we were pleased to offer. Most of you have probably seen the sent out by Ann Wheeler seeking volunteers to run a BBQ for the Big Dance Day to be held at Melba Park on Sunday, 29 th April. Yes, this is the day directly after the Comedy Dinner but this is the time to display the tough determination of Rotary members who want to make a difference in our community. So please dig deep and volunteer to help out at the BBQ to raise money for our various projects and donations. While you are there you might also feel like kicking up your heels! Lastly, make sure you have circled 10 th June in your calendars. That is the date of our club s Changeover Lunch. RAWCS UPDATE Reporter: RAM NATIONAL MANAGER DAVID PEARSON Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) Major players in the global struggle to eradicate malaria have recognised that we have reached a cross-road. Despite the impressive 60% reduction in the annual death toll from malaria since 2000 and the steady stream of countries achieving local malaria elimination. Progress seems to have stalled. Many recognise that now is the time for sustained resurgent activity to achieve malaria elimination for all time. Bill Gates is lobbying for a 2025 date for elimination in SE Asia and the Pacific as well as urging the Australian Government to take leadership to accelerate the programs. The 1 st Malaria World Congress will be held in Melbourne (July ) and I have been appointed to the International Advisory Board for the Conference Committee. The Congress is shaping up to be a very important and timely meeting at which RAM will be represented, highlighting the success of our ongoing programs in PNG and The Solomons and our commitment to assist Timor Leste to quickly achieve malaria free certification through support from a US $240,000 Global Grant. 8 Thanks for the feedback to Phil and myself on our radio presentation on 99.1 FM Yarra Yalley Radio today- the time goes so quick the hour seems like just five minutes - it's a great way to put forward the Rotary Message and tell our local community what we are doing. Further good news with the distribution of the Bendigo Bank Mount Evelyn donated basketballs by Rotarian Judite R/C Dili her presence in all photos. Also it is thank you to Rotarians R/C Lilydale with the donated air pumps by Des and Judith Shiel and Hans Witlox together with Rotarian Lindsay Murphy R/C Leongatha who supported Judite with the first distribution first lot of basketballs. Also it is thank you to DIK West Footscray for packing and loading in shipping container for distribution Rotarians Bob Glindemann R/C Melbourne Laurie Fisher R/C West Footscray Davis Dippie R/C Keilor.
