Notes from the December Ministry Council Meeting Ministry meetings will be held once a quarter on Sundays in February, May, August, and November. The first ministry meeting this year will be Feb. 7 after worship with a potluck meal for the congregation. This is a change from our longtime first Wednesday meetings for committees and ministries. Signs required to prohibit open carry and concealed carry of weapons on church property have been made in-house and posted at all public entrances. As of late December, our pledges this year are comparable to 2015: $363,408 pledged from 66 individuals and families for 2016 and $369,604 pledged from 70 individuals and families for Deacons can expect a workshop led by Vernon Davis in the first part of A Faith and Film series is scheduled for April and May, with the topics of death and life. Our Fifth Sunday offering after worship on Jan. 31 will go to Friendship International in honor of longtime volunteers Martha Burns and Mary Ellen Sullivan. Discussion continues on updating our street-side sign to an electronic LED sign as the estates of Bill and Faye Ludwig gave HPBC two gifts specified for our property. HPBC has received two donations from organizations. Sir Speedy on Far West gave us a large format printer, copier, and laminator as well as supplies, and Lifetime Learning gave us a large screen television to replace the smaller one we often loan to Lifetime Learning and other groups. 6 Who s that in the building? Highland Park offers space to a diverse bunch of groups. Here are a few of the groups you may see around the building: The Attic Film Fest is currently using Room 225 on Tuesday evenings for acting classes. TAFF s mission is to support and empower independent filmmakers to spread Christ s message through film. In addition to rent, they also gave us some comp tickets to their screenings at Alamo Drafthouse! Lifetime Learning Institute of Austin uses classrooms all week for the seven classes Highland Park hosts. Classes are only $20 each and are available to adults 50+. Highland Park frequently hosts language classes, writing classes, and poetry classes. This spring we re also hosting a Latin American history class taught in Spanish! LLI graciously donated a 42 TV to us this past fall. Jacob Wise teaches guitar lessons on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in Room 234. After earning a master's degree in jazz studies at the University of North Texas, and traveling the world performing on cruise ships, he's back in Austin to teach and work on his music, which blends classic and contemporary jazz influences. 7 The Austin Genealogical Society meets on the last Tuesday of each month in Sapp Hall. The Society aims to collect, preserve, and promote genealogical research, especially records relating to Travis County and Texas in general. Their monthly meetings typically include time to get acquainted with other researchers, announcements, and a speaker on a genealogical topic. The Bluebonnet Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild meets the third Saturday of each month in Room 225. Bluebonnet ANG is one of three (yes, three!) needlecraft groups that meet at Highland Park. Bluebonnet ANG is open to all for membership. Their meetings are focused on education and fellowship, and they welcome all skill levels.
