1 Volume 1, Issue 2 September 2015 Newsletter Revamp Do you enjoy learning about Lodge happenings? Do you enjoy getting up to date on Lodge news? Well I have just the thing! Its in your hand, or on your screen. At a whopping eight pages long, the new newsletter is longer than before, keeping you tuned into even the smallest lodge news available. The Lodge Secretary (Me, of course), The Lodge Chief (Ryan Johnston), and the Lodge Advisor (John Hamman) will be in charge of gathering all of the Lodge happenings, even the smallest. You may be wondering, How do I submit an article? I m glad you asked. To have your article published in this newsletter, well not THIS one, is quite simple. First you need to contact me to find out how long your article has to be. Then you need to write up an piece to your appropriate length and edit it for grammatical mistakes. Once it is perfect, or close, you need to send it to z.garvey2016@gmail.com and I will then make changes and edits (I will consult with you) and then find a spot in here to publish the article. If I cannot publish it I will let you know. Now if you don t see an article that your ea- ger to read, and you don t know the information to contribute, then me and I will do my best to find material on it and put it in the next publication of this newsletter. Now down to some dates. Every odd month I will be publishing a newsletter (Jan, Mar, May, etc ) so look forward to those. If you are submitting an article they are due on the last Thursday of the previous months (Feb, Apr, Jun, etc ) at the Lodge meeting, unless I have given you special permission (Don t bank on it). Anyway, if we didn't have money no lodge events would happen, and no patches. So to pay your dues, get in the nearest car, drive on over to the council office, and someone there should be able to help you. I am not however encouraging illegal activity. What this means is not only will we be donating money for this project but we will be conducting the Cheerful service portion as well. With this we are donating $6,000 from our building fund and will be fundraising $12,000 through a campaign. The entire project is going to come out to about $24,000, so make sure you spread the word! Lodge was the first cabin constructed at the newly opened Camp Sinoquipe in Lodge was dedicated in memory of Private Willis Bill L. Jr. who was killed in France in World War II. Bill was active in the Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle. For the past 67 years, lifelong memories have been made in this cabin and many Scout stories have originated from the time spent here. Please consider contributing financially to this worthwhile project to ensure that future Scouts can make their own memories in Lodge. For more information : See Next Page For the Forum!!! If you still have any questions please talk to a lodge officer. We would love to see you come out and help. Page 3

5 Renovation Project To fulfill our obligation in the order, it is imperative that we not only financially invested in this project but that we do our service as well. We need to have a good turnout at each of these events in order for our monetary donation to mean anything. 6 The Rattler Time after time I continuously stop and reflect on how far I have come in life. One thing that always seems to spark in my mind is being a part of an Honor Society based on Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service. I hope each and every one of you can say this as well. In my mind without a doubt this year has been an outstanding year to be a part of our Order, especially for our lodge. Not only are we celebrating the OA s 100th anniversary but we must remember 70 years ago a Lodge Chief Report small but meaningful lodge was created; Guneukitschik. I encourage you all to join us in our upcoming lodge events such as the Fall Ordeal/Brotherhood weekend during October 23rd-25th. You could help out tremendously by attending one of our Renovation weekends and be a part of restoring our camps oldest building. The dates our located deeper in our newsletter and I encourage you to take a look. Don t worry that s not all, we are helping staff Webelo woods this year if you re interested shoot me an . In addition to this make sure your getting your Arrowman Service Awards turned in so you can earn our centennial sash patch and remember the deadline to turn it in is at our annual banquet on December 28th. I also recommend that you join our Facebook and Remind 101 group for more information on upcoming events. With all this knowledge of how to become an active member of our lodge I challenge you, strive to fulfill the obligation you once took and DareToDo! The 100th anniversary year of the order of the Arrow has been a great year for Guneukitschik Lodge. We had a fantastic showing at our Conclave this year with over 80 Arrowmen from our lodge participating and we have set the bar high for I hope to take a large contingent to the next Conclave so plan on attending. NOAC was a fantastic experience as well. We took 24 members to Michigan State Universtiy and came away with new ideas Lodge Advisor Report about how to improve the lodge and contribute more to both scouting and our community. This year we are hoping to get more active and need your help. Our commitment to renovate the Lodge is the perfect place to start. In addition to our financial support it is crucial that we do the work as well. An active lodge is a happy lodge! We elected a new Lodge Executive Committee at Pow Wow and they will start their new positions in January but will end their terms at Pow Wow We are looking for new chairmen and advisors. If you have any questions or are looking for ways to get more active with the lodge, please let me know. WWW, John Hamman johnfhamman@gmail.com Lodge Advisor Page 6

8 The Rattler Conclave 2015 Recap Hey brothers, This is Alex Bausman your 2015 Conclave chairmen. I wanted to first off say thanks to all of you guys for the help. Everyone of came with one goal in mind which was to cheerfully serve our lodge to make conclave a hit. This all would not be possible if it wasn't for the devotion of all our Arrowmen, so thank you. Over all conclave in my eyes was a blast. I can certainly say I didn't see one disgruntled guest from our section the whole weekend. So with this I d say we achieved our goal to create a unique and fun conclave. Our shows for the weekend headed by our own brother Mark Shepheard were very well put together with a high level of professionalism.. Our activities chairmen Ryan Johnston did a great job of utilizing our camps facilities and materials. In the dining hall culinary masterpieces were made.. Our photographers and writers did a phenomenal job bring together the event in great detail. All in all everything went great. Yours in service, Alex Bausman OA Work Weekends During the OA work weekends our lodge gathers for fun and fellowship throughout a weekend full of cheerful service dedicated to our wonderful Camp Sinoquipe. During a normal OA work weekend, everyone willing to participate gather up at Camp Sinoquipe Friday night, camp up at Sinoquipe, Page 8 have breakfast Saturday morning, and work until lunch time, have lunch, go back to work until around dinner time, have dinner, cool-down after dinner and then sleep Saturday night and wake up Sunday, have breakfast, cleanup camping area, and then departure. Yours in Brotherhood, Will Hildebrand
9 Volume 1, Issue 2 National Leadership Seminar (NLS) Are you interested in talking a national training course to better your leadership skills and also learn more about the Order of the Arrow, then I have a training course for you. NLS which stands for National Leadership Seminar, is held three times a year. Our region has it in Pittsburg and Camp Alpine this year. The northeast region chief is in charge of putting it together and he invites the best trainers from across the region to train at this event. Also, there is usually a guest trainer, which could be the national chief. The course is a Friday night to Sunday morning. It is a very intensive with little breaks. You will learn a lot about how to further your leadership skills and a little about the OA. The course also has you complete a mini wood badge ticket that is a pledge to come back and help support 3 different community organizations. If you have any questions about this training opportunity please me a t n i c h o - las8896@gmail.com. I took this course last year and I hope to see someone from our lodge go again this year. Ordeal/Brotherhood Conversions Attention all new ordeal members or anyone looking to convert to brotherhood. There will be a new system of conversions. No longer will there be conversions on Thursday nights up at summer camp. This has been done in order to improve membership attendance at brotherhood work weekends so that we can do more camp improve- ments. There will be four weekends a year that will be just for brotherhood conversions. Those dates are: October 23th-25th If you wish to attend these weekends you MUST register by the Monday before the weekend at noon. To sign up all you have to do is call the Opportunities For New Members! council office and have them put your name on the list. If you don t sign up it will cost $5 to eat and you will be last in line. October 23th-25th If you re new to our lodge then you might have realized that our meetings can be quite boring. Well I was there once. I had to sit through meeting after meeting just so I could hear when the fun stuff is. I am hear to help you. The first opportunities for you to become active is to become a chairman. There are various chairman such as ordeal chair, brotherhood chair, Pow-wow chair, and ice cream social chair. Now some chair positions are more challenging than others but you will have help from all of your fellow brothers. They will help you in any way you might need. Now second on my list of opportunities is work weekends or brotherhood weekends. These are both weekends that our lodge gets together up at camp and has a weekend of fellowship and service. Lastly there is Conclave. There is an article further about it, however we are in need of staff, so if you wanted to learn more about the OA or get to know lodge members then this is the opportunity for you. If you have any questions feel free to contact any one on the exec. board and they would be more than willing to answer them. Page 9

Were on the Web! Guneukitschik.org Brothers, I am pleased to say we have had 53 candidates complete their ordeal and 15 of our brothers sealed their membership by taking their brotherhood. Through the ordeal weekends we were ably to get a lot of work done for camp. As you know we are always looking for more people to help out at these weekends. We have the potential for 51 candidates to take their ordeal in the fall. The fall ordeal weekend is October 23rd- 25th. If you can help out please sign up at the council office so we have an idea of who is planning to come. On another note we have 270 dues paid members of our lodge so far this year. This means we are only 9 shy of last years numbers. If you know someone who hasn t paid their dues, please help encourage them to as it helps the lodge finically and it allows our lodge to select more vigils each year. I look forward to seeing you at the next ordeal weekend in October and if you have been or- deal for at least 10 months then you also have the opportunity to seal your membership in the order by taking your brotherhood. If you have any questions regarding membership feel free to me at nicholas8896@gmail.com. Nicholas Dougherty
