1 Black Hawk Lodge HAWK TALES Mississippi Valley Council Issue 3 May 2017 A Message from Our Chief Brothers, Spring Conclave was an amazing success thanks to all the hard work put in not only by the LEC but by everyone who attended. I would like to give special thanks to our cooks, our ceremonies team, and our inductions team for always doing an amazing job. I would also like to welcome our new brothers and congratulate them on completing their ordeal as well as congratulate those who sealed their brotherhood. The officers and LEC member s terms are winding down but as they do we are gearing up for another busy but incredible summer as well as Fall Reunion. This summer we are introducing our new OA Provisional program OA Service Corps. Details are inside this newsletter. Pow-Wow was a success last summer and we are excited to be bringing it back and with some added fun. Pow-Wow is every Monday night at both SSR and CE and we welcome all arrowmen to attend every week. One of the Order of the Arrow s purposes is to provide back to the youth. The Pow-Wow is something the lodge loves doing because it is something the youth attending summer camp get to experience and the lodge takes pride in providing this opportunity for fun and fellowship for the entire camp. OA Service Corps is going to be an amazing opportunity and I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed in attending. A lot of great arrowmen are working hard to ensure that the participants are going to have the time of their lives. More information on These last 2 years as Lodge Chief have been unforgettable. I am honored and so very proud to be able to serve the youth of Mississippi Valley Council and Black Hawk Lodge as Lodge Chief. This is my last newsletter article as Chief so I d like to take this time to thank some people that have made me into the person I am today. Over my time as an officer in the lodge I have worked with 2 Lodge Advisers and 3 Staff Advisers. Bruce Moechnig and Rick Atwood have been amazing mentors for me and have helped me tremendously not only with the lodge but in life. I am proud to be able to call them not only mentors but friends. I have worked with J. David Gilbert, David Lane and most recently Todd Lamison during my time and I can say that each of them has worked with me in different areas because they all bring something different to the table. It has been a pleasure working with these professional scouters because I knew that I could always depend on them and at the end of the day they always wanted to help me run the best program possible and be the best Lodge Chief I could be. When I walk into the scout office they are nothing but happy to help me and for that I am eternally grateful. There are also more people that have helped me in numerous ways and to all of them I thank you. Dues Reminder that your dues must be paid to be an active Lodge member! Dues are $20 and can be paid in the scout shops or online at blackhawklodge.org In order to receive your service patches or be awarded any awards (Vigil Honor, Founders Award) your dues must be paid! Dues must be paid in order to attend any Lodge, section, or national events! It has truly been an honor to serve as Lodge Chief of Black Hawk Lodge and I can honestly say this is one of the pinnacles of my scouting career. Jack Gunsten Lodge Chief
2 Lodge Adviser Minute Greetings fellow Arrowmen! I would like to express how proud I am of all the youth and adults that participated in the Spring Conclave at Camp Eastman. If you missed the event, you really missed out on some wonderful camping weather and the start of a great service project in the restoration of Pete s Pond. I would like to congratulate all the new Ordeal and Brotherhood members and thank them for all the hard work they put in on clearing brush and giving us a great start on Pete s Pond. When the project is finished and the Cub Scout are using the area for their programs you will be able to take pride in the fact that you helped to make it all happen. The year is not even half way over yet and we already have a few adults with over 100 hours of service recorded and a handful of youth with over 50 hours of service. So I know at the Winter Banquet I will be awarding not only several of the 50 hour Red Service OA Flaps but it looks like I will need to give out a few of the Silver 150 Service hour flaps also. It s not too late, if you would like to earn one of these very special service awards we have multiple opportunities coming up for you to show off your cheerful service. We will be providing our cheerful service on May 29 th to help with the Tri State Pro Am Golf Tournament, which will be held at Spring Lake Country Club in Quincy. The Tournament will benefit the United Way and Youth Golf in the area. Home town boy Luke Guthrie will be bringing 18 of his Professional Golfing buddies to Spring Lake for a day of golf and fun. We will be helping with parking cars from about 7AM till around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. If you would like to participate send me an at rickya80@comcast.net and let me know. Summer Camp is just around the corner and I am looking forward to seeing you all there! The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others Mahatma Gandhi Rick Atwood Lodge Adviser
3 Vice Chief Minute Brothers, 2017 is flying by, the Lodge has already done a lot of great work, but the fun is just beginning! To start I would like to thank our Chapter Chiefs, Garrett, Anthony, and Ryan, for doing such a great job with the Webelos crossover ceremonies. As a lodge, we conducted 23 crossovers and crossed over 76 Cub Scouts into Boy Scouting! Also, a big thank you to everyone else who helped with the crossovers. Unit elections are starting to gear up and if you are interested in helping with those be sure to contact your local chapter chief. Summer Camp, my favorite time of year, is right around the corner and it is sure to be a blast as always! We always need plenty of help and would love for you to help us out this summer! We are bringing back the OA Pow Wow on Mondays which is sure to be a huge hit again! This summer, we also have the Black Hawk Lodge OA Service Corps! Check out the article on that later in the newsletter to get all the info you need to be a part of this amazing program! As always, feel free to contact me with any questions at or at bitsaden11@gmail.com Let s keep making this year a great one! Isaiah Aden Lodge Vice-Chief Treasurer Minute Brothers, It's getting to be summer time and we have plenty of cool t-shirts. Also, we still have blankets and a bunch of patches. At summer camp, we are going to sell the rest of the Salvation Army patches and the second fundraiser patch. Call me if you have any cool merchandise ideas call me at or me at Ryan_Spilman@yahoo.com RT Spilman Lodge Treasurer
4 OA Service Corps New for this summer, we have created a brand-new summer camp program for you arrowmen, the OA Service Corps! This is a one week program during the second week of summer camp at Saukenauk Scout Reservation, June This will be a week full of meaningful cheerful service, and above all, an unprecedented amount of fun and fellowship. Something else to remember is that the service you do this week will count towards your service hour lodge flaps! If you attend this week of summer camp you will be given the freedom to choose your own activities, allowing you to get more out of one week than ever thought possible. Don t you want to go to another amazing week of summer camp where you don t have to take any merit badges? Plus, there will be an opportunity to earn Brotherhood this week, if you are eligible. The cheerful service given, lessons learned, fun times experienced, and friendships created during this week will be memories that can last a lifetime, and make this summer one to remember! And if you attend another week of camp with your troop, all of this comes at a price of only $135! And that is a small price to pay for this absolutely amazing week! If you choose to only attend summer camp with the Black Hawk Lodge Service corps, then you will pay the regular camp price of $270. So, if you are an OA member and are looking for a brand-new summer camp experience, then attending Black Hawk Lodge Service Corps is for you. If this sounds like something you are interested in, then I encourage you to go for it! If you are interested then you need to go to blackhawklodge.org and fill out the registration form under the OA Service Corps tab. And I can assure you that Black Hawk Lodge Service Corps will not disappoint! Spring Conclave Recap Black Hawk Lodge s 2017 Spring Conclave was held at Camp Eastman and it was a complete success! We inducted 10 new Ordeal Members, 7 new Brotherhood members, and had a total attendance of over 60 people! We cleared a ton of brush around the pond that we are paying to renovate and we made a lot of progress around our ceremony ring. One exciting attraction this weekend was a dunk tank which generated some extra revenue and more importantly a lot of laughs! Huge shout out to the Nimats and Elangomats for reliving their inductions experience with the candidates. Also, thank you to the members of the lodge who served on and with the ceremonies team! Thanks to Ranger Phil for the help with service projects and for the help renovating the ring. As always, the food was a highlight of the weekend thanks to the dedicated volunteers we have in the kitchen! Last but not least, we could not do what we do without dedicated members like you and we look forward to seeing you at the rest of our events!
