1 Meeting Minutes August 22, 2014, 1:00 pm CST Bryan West Hospital Co-Chairs: Dr. Belau and Dr. Miers Attendees: Jennifer Fry, Julia Hebenstreit, Ellen McElderry, Terri Marti, Dave Miers, Pam Oltman, Ray Reimer, Nikki Roseberry, Jill Sauser, Andres Sandoval, Krystyn Schmidt, Melissa Shaffer, and Hayley Sutter I. Approval of Minutes Julia made a motion to approve the July 18, 2014 meeting minutes. Terri seconded this motion; the meeting minutes were unanimously approved. II. III. IV. Coalition Updates a. Norfolk Dave attended the Blue Cross Blue Shield check granting ceremony on behalf of the NSSPC. Representatives from the Norfolk Coalition handed out information on suicide prevention and had a reception and ceremony including a balloon release. The grant will focus on youth suicide prevention. Josh Rivedal will be preforming the The Gospel According To Josh, a 15 character, one-man show about a journey through religion, reality TV and his father s suicide, in Norfolk over two days. Norfolk will be holding a walk on September 21. A training is being planned for October or November; however, the details have not been finalized. b. Other Coalitions Beatrice had a community justice meeting. Beatrice is hosting an Out of Darkness Walk on September 20. c. State Coalition Six seed grants were awarded; awardees included Gage County (grant will help support their awareness walk), Norfolk (grant will help support a youth support group), the Norfolk mental health clinic (grant will help support trainings), Kearney (grant will help support their golf tournament), Wilber-Clatonia (community and school QPR training), and the Grand Island Peer Support Conference (grant will help support QPR training). The NSSPC will be spotlighted in the next Kim Foundation newsletter. Update from Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Fry The University of Nebraska Public Policy Center co-sponsored the Nebraska School Safety and Security Conference in Broken Bow, Nebraska on August 7-8, 2014; the conference included a QPR training and a presentation by R.E.S.P.E.C.T., who wants to incorporate suicide prevention into their skits. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. reaches 30,000 people each year and wants to give suicide prevention wristbands to youth they come in contact with. Awareity had a booth at the conference and is interested in working with the Coalition. Educators in attendance were very interested in LB923. Andres held a QPR training at a local school for faculty and staff. September is Suicide Awareness Month; a proclamation signing event will be held on September 2 at 11:00 AM in the Governor s Office; lunch at Billy s Restaurant will follow. The Army National Guard is hosting the First Annual Suicide Prevention 5k Run and 1 Mile Walk on September 13 at the Veterans Memorial Garden in Lincoln, Nebraska. Goals Development The state suicide prevention goals were last updated in April The current state goals go through 2015; however, the Coalition would like to be proactive and begin reviewing and updating the goals starting at the September Coalition meeting. 1

2 V. LOSS Development Advisory Group The Kearney LOSS Team is continuing to get organized; Dave Griek held a golf tournament on August 8 that benefitted the Kearney LOSS Team. The Lincoln LOSS Team is actively recruiting new members; 11 people recently expressed interest in joining the team, of which 4 are likely to join the LOSS Team. VI. Member Activity Update Bryan Health is recognizing the week of October 5 as Mental Illness Awareness Week. The Run to Overcome will kick off Mental Illness Awareness Week on Sunday September 28; the Run will include a kid s 1 mile fun run, 5k run and walk, and 10k run. Proceeds from the Run to Overcome will fund depression awareness and mental illness education. Other events during Mental Illness Awareness Week include: a presentation by Dr. Shawn Shea titled The Human Matrix: Finding Happiness in Difficult Times ; an all-day continuing education workshop on intervening techniques, questions to ask, and how to listen for suicide cues held at the Medical Center; and a community leader breakfast on the 10 th. The Kim Foundation is excited to announce Mariel Hemingway as this year s keynote speaker at their second annual A Time for Hope & Healing," luncheon held at the Embassy Suites-La Vista location. Mariel Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway s granddaughter, is an Academy Award nominated actress, model, author, and mental health advocate. She will deliver a powerful message of inspiration, hope, and insight on how to live a life of wellness, while embracing your mental health. National Updates The National Suicide Prevention Week toolkit has been released and is available online; the toolkit offers helpful tips to raise awareness. The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) has a representative, Adam Choy, assigned to Nebraska who can be contacted for information and resources. Awareness a. Don t Be Sidelined Campaign (Partnership with The Kim Foundation) The radio spots have been recorded for this year with each month having a different focus; October will be focused on mental health awareness, November will focus on military and veterans, and December will be focused on general mental health. The Ohio State game has been identified as the volleyball game the DBSC will be at; the game begins at 5:00 pm and set-up will begin at 3:30 pm. The game will include interview between the 2 nd and 3 rd sets. The football game has yet to be identified; however, it will likely either be the October 25 or November 1 football game; set-up for football games begins two hours prior to kick-off. The Social Work department at USC has invited the Kim Foundation to participate in their Suicide Prevention Month as a voice of the day. The Kim Foundation will be doing a social media push prior to the first Husker football game. Training Updates The DHHS Prevention Group is putting on a Prevention Summit in November to promote healthy families; the summit will feature three keynotes: Dr. David Schram, Mary Pipher, and Rich Harwood. Registration costs have yet to be determined; however, it is expected to be minimal. An AMSR training will be held on September 8. Additional AMSR and CONNECT trainings are being set up; however, logistics have not been finalized. Kelli R. is working to schedule lunch and learns and QPR trainings for military personnel and their families. A Mental Health First Aid Instructor training is scheduled for September 24-October 4 in Omaha; the training is an intensive 9:00-5:00 training and registration costs about $2,000. Certification as a Mental Health First Aid Instructor is contingent on passing an exam following the training. The Mental 2

3 Health Association of Nebraska is hosting ASSIST Training for all their staff. Don and Terri will be hosting a training in Norfolk during the week of August 24. X. Other In the wake of Robin Williams suicide, national and local media outlets focused on suicide and depression awareness, education, and warning signs. The AAS has started a sub-division for attempt survivors and the QPR Institute is putting together resources for talking about suicide prevention and awareness. A committee has been formed to work on the implementation of LB 923; one of their main goals is to put together a list of recommended suicide prevention trainings. XI. XII.
