2 Into The Air Page 2 Chiefly Speaking Greetings Arrowmen! My name is Nathan Meronek and I have the privilege of serving as your Tom Kita Chara Lodge Chief. I am a life Scout with Troop 297 and Vigil Honor member of the order of the arrow. This will be my 4 th year in the Order and my 3 rd year on the Lodge Executive Committee. Being elected to this position means a lot to me and I am so excited for this upcoming lodge year and the things the LEC has planned. You will have a lot of awesome patches, fellowship, and fun events to look forward to this lodge year! Including new events in the works for the spring! One reminder is that our Winter Banquet will be held on January 7 th, at Marathon Park in Wausau. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you and getting to know my fellow Arrowmen in the lodge that I have yet to meet. VICE CHIEF OF ADMINISTRAION My name is Austin Zurakowski and I am will serve as your Vice Chief of Administration for the Lodge Year. This year we are planning a lot of activities to keep you engaged. I am really excited for this year and hope you are too. In this position I get to work very closely with all the Chapter Chiefs to ensure that the chapters are operating to the best of their ability. I am a firm believer that when our chapters run well the lodge does as well; because of this, the LEC is implementing a Quality Chapter Award to recognize those chapters who work towards improving many aspects of their program and service. I encourage each of you to attend one of your chapter meetings this year; your ideas are what make each chapter great. Many of you may not know what chapter you reside in so take a look at the map and then read your corresponding Chapter Chief's article to find the time and location of your chapter meeting. Rib Mountain: Usually meet at Camp Phillips at 6:30 PM on the second Thursday of each month. Crystal Lake: Usually first Tuesday of the month, 7pm, Rhinelander Senior Center Northwoods: Usually first Thursday of each month at 7:00 at Tomahawk Elementary school. Ojibwa: Chapter Meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at roundtable. Mushkodany: Usually first Tuesday of the month, 6:45pm, Stevens Point HS Math Department. SECTION CONCLAVE 2016 RECAP This section consists of about 3,500 OA members from our lodge and 4 others, and includes regions in the great states of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Each September the lodges in the section hold a section-wide weekend event called the Section Conclave. This is basically a large gathering of members from all lodges in the section. What's great about the Section Conclave is that it offers a fun, action-packed program while still being affordable and open to any and all Arrowmen who want to do something truly awesome in their scouting career. At the conclave, there were many great training sessions led by knowledgeable trainers, patch trading, an awesome campfire/show, and so much more. Along with this you get the chance to meet hundreds of people from other lodges. From our lodge Matt Jaworski was elected Section C1-B Chief. Congratulations Matt! Hello fellow Arrowmen, I had the pleasure of serving as OA Coordinator this past summer at Camp Tesomas. We had a great year, with over 113 new inductees, 61 new brotherhood members, and 6 new vigil honor members. Congratulations, and may the founding principles of our order, glow ever brighter in your hearts and consciousness. I would also like to thank everyone who helped with ceremonies, sand paintings, and those who served as ordeal masters this past summer. I greatly appreciated your help; our program would be nothing without your hard work and dedication. Once again, congratulations and thank you to everyone. I look forward to another great year. 4 Into The Air Page 4 SERVICE Cheerful Service With No Irksome Tasks The Badger State Winter Games are fast approaching and they are looking for your help in assisting at the games. The Games will be centrally located in Wausau, held on Saturday January 21, and Saturday January 28, If you fear the cold you can take a spot in the nice warm heated building doing a variety of tasks, or if you would like to face the elements you could hit the trail and test your skills against the forces of nature. Put your first aid skills to the test as you man a first aid station, or put all your hard work and winter survival knowledge to the ultimate challenge as you help others cheerfully in a day of fun and service. Saving a life or working hard to keep others safe is a way to give back to the community as this community and competitors have been supporting you along the way. Cub Scouts are the future of Boy Scouts and the OA. That means that we need your help to get these scouts to keep interested and we can do this by promoting summer/winter camp! 5 Into The Air Page 5 OPERATION ARROW 2017 To continue a tradition that dates back to the 1950 National Scout Jamboree, over 750 youth Arrowmen will answer the call to serve as part of Operation Arrow - the largest jamboree staff team ever assembled by the Order of the Arrow! Operation Arrow staff members will support the jamboree program by joining one of three primary OA areas: the Service Corps, the Trek Guides and the Indian Village. program The summer of 2017 seems like a long time away, but planning for the next national Scout jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR) is already well underway. The Order of the Arrow will continue to release information about Operation Arrow staff opportunities and how to become involved in the coming months. We hope you will join us for what is sure to be the experience of a lifetime, as a part of Operation Arrow at the 2017 National Scout Jamboree! 6 Into The Air Page 6 Chapter Updates MUSHKODANY Mushkodany has had an amazing start with the newly elected chapter officers. Serving as the chapter chief for a second term is Ezra Eckerson. The newly elected vice chapter chief is Joe Daniels. We ve begun planning ceremonies which will be underway soon. The chapter has gotten together to help with a cub scout chuck wagon. After which, we played a round of disc golf. Mushkodany also saw great attendance at the section conclave which was in Rochester, MN. I look forward to another amazing year, NORTHWOODS Northwoods Chapter is planning a fun activity for early April. At the next meeting will talk about service opportunities in the near future. If you haven't heard yet, we have moved our meeting time from previous years to the second Thursday of every month, in the scout shop meeting hall at Camp Phillips in Weston. Our first meeting went well, and we elected our chair positions: Ceremonies: Austin Nest, Communications: Taylor Halverson, Service: Jack Davisson, and Elections: Derek Kedrowski. If you want to get active in the chapter, come to a meeting! I look forward to seeing you then! CRYSTAL LAKE We have a good start, hoping to keep getting attendance up. We have almost all of our chairs filled. Our service project on October 22 went well. We prepared, served and cleaned up the banquet dinner, for the United Federation for Disabled Archers. I hope this year goes good for the other chapters. Alex Metzger Crystal Lake Chapter Chief AHDAWAGAM Hello I am Henry Niedbalski and I am excited to be the Ahdawagam chapter chief for the year. We have some information for our meetings. September we had disk golf October we had games and pizza, for November we will have a potluck dinner. There are some goals that we can do this year, first is service, that is the basis of the OA (I think we could do about 50 hours of service), second is communication I want everyone to know what is happening in our chapter so I think that I will have a monthly or every few months. 7 Into The Air Page 7 Midwest Rally Section Conclave 2017 SAVE THE DATE OCTOBER 6-8, 2017 CAMP DECORAH HOLMEN, WI Like Section Conclave? Then the Midwest Rally is for you! It is a gathering of section C1-A and C1-B. You get to meet people from 11 Lodges! NLS 2017 National Leadership Seminar (NLS) is the hallmark training event in the Order of the Arrow. It s aim is to prepare current and future youth and adult leadership to be successful in their roles within the Order. February 17-19, 2017 in Rochester, Indiana March 24-26, 2017 in Central City, Iowa October 20-22, 2017 in High Ridge, Missouri Registration for all three Seminars will open soon at registration.oa-bsa.org TKC to Host Section C-1B Conclave 2017 Greetings, What does being the 'Host Lodge' mean for TKC? Well, we will need 100 or more Arrowmen to help plan and facilitate the conclave. I have created committees to help with this task to serve over 400 Arrowmen from the five lodges in our Section. So look these over to see were you could be of service. Facilities: Assist with the general layout of camp as well as help with events during the day. Housing: Arrange sleeping for all participants. Food Service: Prepare and clean up all meals in the kitchen and dining hall. Registration: Friday night check in of all participants. Medical: Do medical check ins Friday and Saturday. Each Committee has a youth Chairman and an adult Adviser to help you with your assignment. Watch for more details in the coming months. OA CORDINATOR FALL CONFRENCE RECAP Fall Conference 2016 had about 200 Arrowmen gathered at Camp Tesomas for a frenzy of food, fun, and fellowship. Following breakfast on Saturday, the attendees regrouped in the Dinning Hall for officer elections. Nathan Meronek was elected Lodge Chief, Zach Steinberger Vice-Chief of Chapters, Johnny Pries Vice-Chief of Program, and Austin Zurakowski Vice- Chief of Administration. Each Chapter then elected their Chapter officers. Following elections and lunch came an afternoon full of fun activities. From lodgeball to cribbage, there was something for everyone. After dinner new Ordeal and Brotherhood members went through their respective ceremonies, while six Arrowmen began the process of keeping their vigils to become Vigil Honor members. These six were introduced to the Lodge as the newest Vigil Honor Members at breakfast Sunday morning. They are: Kristin Woller, Lorrie Rindfleisch, Johnny Pries, Ethan Buechel, Nathan Meronek, and Scott Howard. Congratulations to all! Remember your Ordeal? Remember that guy that was always around, telling you where to go and what to do, making sure you had enough water and at least some food? He was even there at the Ordeal ceremony and he read off your Ordeal name. Remember that guy? He was the OA Coordinator at camp, and in addition to what you saw him doing, he also built campfires, coordinated the volunteers that made the sand painting, recruited and directed the ceremonialists for the callout, pre-ordeal, Ordeal, and Brotherhood ceremonies, and took care of every detail for each of those ceremonies. How would you like to be that guy? Applications are now being accepted for the 2017 OA Coordinator at Camp Tesomas, as well as all other camp staff positions.
