Al mentioned that the opening of the Men s shed went well. About 120 persons in attendance. There are several club events happening, Rotary Club of Croydon (Big Band), Wheelers Hill Flood Relief Fundraiser on Fri March 25 th (Ed. I suggest you ring Geoff Haw directly on m if you d like to attend), The GSE welcome back on Tue Mar 29 th (which is our Club meeting next week). Note the Board meeting is at Al s house on Monday March 28 th for the board members. Ange Forthun chaired the meeting. The following reports were received: Brian Norton seeking numbers for the Kenworth Truck visit on Tue April 12 th. (Ed. See elsewhere in Bulletin). Rob Haines the next Peridot Theatre session is on Wed 11 th May, the play is called Sitting Pretty. Numbers required by Monday April 4 th. (Ed. See elsewhere in Bulletin). Peter Dalwood asked members to consider sponsoring the bike riders on their trek to Adelaide (or please forward monies if you ve already committed). Rob McPherson has flyers for the Quilt show ready for members to display. Tony Hough advised that we have received a swathe of books. A new sorting time was arranged prior to this weekend. The roster was redistributed to plug in some gaps. Michele Oscar asked for final numbers for next week s meeting on Tuesday 29 th March at the Wheelers Hill cub venue. David Alexander promoted the District Conference. He promised a great time with reflections on Rotary, the years ahead, some top speakers and an exciting program. Not too late to book!

3 The Glen Waverley Rotaryannes and Friends are holding their annual Fashion Parade and luncheon at the Mulgrave Country Club, for 12 noon on Wednesday 30th March, with fashions from Vera Jorge of Wheelers Hill. Tickets at $25 each are available from Sue Mair, telephone All the proceeds from this event will be donated to The Cerebral Palsy Education Centre in Glen Waverley. Please help us make this a successful event by supporting us. Please note Merv Ericson of the RC Monash has been selected as the DG for 2013/14. Congratulations to Merv and Kay and every success as they plan and prepare for this exciting journey over the next three years. District Governor, David Alexander recognised Creagh Bown's ongoing commitment to the Rotary Foundation and presented him with membership into the Paul Harris Society. Members of the PHS donate $1000 per year, every year, to the Rotary Foundation. Vocational Visit to Kenworth Trucks, 64 Canterbury Road, Bayswater 12th April. Tour time is 3:30 for 4pm for a 90 minute tour/presentation. There are clothing restrictions which I will advise to attendees well before the event. Maximum of 20 adult people can be accommodated, but is not limited to members, so spouse/family/friends can be invited. One restriction is that visitors must not be currently working in the motor industry. 6 Foundation sets up disaster fund for Japan By Ryan Hyland Rotary International News March 2011 People carry their furniture from their ruined home 15 March in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, four days after an earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's northeast coast towns. AP Photo/Kyodo News In response to the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on 11 March, The Rotary Foundation has established the Rotary Japan 2011 Disaster Recovery Fund, which will support long-term recovery projects in affected areas. Rotarians and non-rotarians can donate online. Clubs and districts can contribute cash and District Designated Fund (DDF) allocations to the fund. The 9.0-magnitude quake, Japan's largest in history, and the tsunami that followed it caused widespread devastation, paralysing much of the northern coast. More than 10,000 people have been killed, and thousands are missing. Millions have been left without clean water or power, and at least 550,000 people have been forced from their homes. A series of explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, 140 miles northeast of Tokyo, damaged reactors and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands. The Japanese government is working to contain the situation. Damage from the earthquake and tsunami is estimated at US$170 billion. RI President-nominee Sakuji Tanaka, of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, was in Lisbon, Portugal, on Rotary business during the disasters. He was able to reach his wife, Kyoko, on the phone to confirm her safety. "She said it was the most horrifying experience she'd ever had," says Tanaka. "The northern region of Japan is still in chaos. We are unsure when this chaos will end or when things will get better. However, I am most thankful to know that Rotarians around the world care for us." Japanese RI directors Masaomi Kondo and Masahiro Kuroda, as well as staff at Rotary International's Japan office, are confirmed to be safe. Rotary clubs and districts worldwide are mobilizing efforts to bring urgently needed aid to victims. "I've received many messages from Rotarians all over the world," says Noriko Futagami, the Public Image Resource Group coordinator for Zone 2. "I also have reports that Rotary clubs have begun to start planning projects for immediate help. Unfortunately, there are many Rotarians and families who haven't been able to be contacted. Rotarians in Japan worry for their safety. Jan s say: Thank you to all the Rotarian families that sent me pictures of their grandchildren. The pictures were handed out at this last meeting and I d like all Rotarians and their partners to try and guess who the Rotarian grandparents are of the delightful grandchildren. If you did not get the handout of the pictures and you would like them please ring me on and I can deliver them to you or we can work out sometime for me to give them to you.
