Dr. Marchini and his family recently moved here from Brazil. Dr. Marchini received his dental (1996) and master s (2000) degrees from the State University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Sao Paulo (2006), with a focus on the molecular identification of oral pathogens. Prior to coming to Iowa, Dr. Marchini taught as an assistant professor at the University of Vale do Paraiba, the University of Taubate, and the State University of Sao Paulo, for both undergraduate and graduate students. He taught prosthodontics, geriatric dentistry and occlusion. Dr. Marchini also practiced dentistry in his private dental office located in Sao Jose dos Campos-Brazil. He has published numerous papers and textbooks in the fields of complete dentures, implants, occlusion, and geriatric dentistry. At the University of Iowa, Dr. Marchini teaches pre-doctoral students in the Geriatrics and Special Needs Program and treats patients in the Faculty General Practice. Dr. Marchini's current research focus includes geriatric dental and general health epidemiology, satisfaction of prosthodontic patients, temporomandibular dysfunction and bruxism, and molecular biology tools applied to geriatric and dental problems. His hobbies include having fun with his family (wife and two sons), soccer, diving, swimming, running, and reading. Please stop by his office, N337-1, and say hello. The IASDA Presents a $25,000 Endowment to Benefit Patients and Dental Students Iowa s dental students are sometimes faced with the challenge of completing required procedures when their patients are unable to afford the treatment. The Class of 2011 used the remainder of their class account to create a fund to assist patients with their treatment while enabling students to complete their required procedures. Working with Dr. Michael Kanellis, Dental Clinic Administration, the fund helped more than 50 patients receive their needed treatment while helping students obtain the experience needed to become a successful dentist. (Continued on page 2, IASDA Presents Check)

Page 2 (Continued from page 1, IASDA Presents Check) (Above, left to right): Dr. Michael Kanellis and Taylor Zmoos with the IASDA check for $25,000. On Monday, August 19, 2013, Taylor Zmoos (D3), president of the Iowa American Student Dental Association (IASDA), announced during the 2013 allcollege conference that the IASDA was presenting the College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics with a check for $25,000 to serve as an endowment to benefit future patients with financial needs and the dental students who treat them. The funds were procured from an IASDA account originating with a book store that the organization once ran. Dr. Luca Gobbato Lectures at the College of Dentistry Dr. Luca Gobbato lectured to the periodontics residents, staff, and faculty on August 9, 2013, on management of the extraction site in the anterior maxillary segments and implant esthetics. His lecture included a variety of cases that illustrated the importance of proper treatment planning and multidisciplinary dentistry to achieve satisfactory and predictable results in different clinical scenarios with high esthetic demands. Dr. Gobbato graduated from the University of Verona in 2007 and then moved to Boston where he trained as a periodontist in Tufts University. He maintains a private practice in Verona, Italy, with exclusive dedication to periodontics and oral implantology; he is also a visiting professor at Harvard University and an adjunct clinical assistant professor at the University of Verona. Dr. Gobbato is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He has authored several publications in the topic of implant esthetics in peer-reviewed journals such as the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants, the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, and Clinical Oral Implants Research.
