Jones, DC, USN, who graduated from the College of Dentistry in 2000 with a certificate in endodontics, died of pancreatic cancer in June 2007. His funeral was held in Washington, DC, on June 18. Dr. Kweli Carson, who graduated from the UI Endodontics program in 2000, and Dr. Eric Rivera, former head of the UI Department of Endodontics, both attended the funeral. Dr. Carson described the well attended service: There were lots of Navy people who spoke about Vince, and it was nice because you got the feeling that they really knew him well. Most people talked about how he was always laughing and smiling. One of his Navy colleagues even said, Close your eyes and imagine Vince. I bet you can t even imagine him without a smile on his face. So true Dr. Jones will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on August 27. Nosing Around for the Rest of the Story? Here it is: Dr. Rick Walton, Department of Endodontics, and his wife, Laura, visited Peru for two weeks as part of a group led by Dr. Chuck Huss, UIHC physician. The group, mostly from the Iowa City/Coralville/Cedar Rapids area, hiked the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu the first week. During the second week, the group went farther north to the Cordillera Blanca, an area of very high Andes mountains. The morning the group was going to take the bus back to Lima and then fly home, Dr. Walton developed a severe nosebleed, which could not be controlled. After several trips to a local hospital, and several procedures to control the hemorrhage, his nosebleed finally stopped. Dr. Walton stayed in the hospital for 30 hours and was cared for by Laura and one shift nurse who was responsible for all of the hospital patients as well as her emergency room responsibilities. The bill for Dr. Walton s emergency room visit was $2.00. The fee for the overnight stay was $10.00. The attending doctor s bill: $10.00 (but the Waltons gave him $60.00 in appreciation). The DSB CORNFED bike group heard of Rick Walton s Peruvian nosebleed experience and greeted him with an amusing surprise. For more biking photos, see pages 4-6
