Recent Publications 2 3-5-6 3 Dr. David Drake Completes CIC Academic Leadership Program Dr. David Drake, Department of Endodontics and Dows, has just completed the one-year Academic Leadership Program, which is offered by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). Dr. Drake was one of five University of Iowa faculty who were chosen to join the 2009-2010 class of CIC Academic Leadership Program (ALP) Fellows. Faculty from other Big 10 schools, as well as from the University of Chicago, are chosen to join each class. The ALP consists of three seminars hosted by different CIC universities. ALP Fellows may also be required to participate in on-campus activities throughout the academic year. Dr. Drake attended seminars at Michigan State University, the University of Illinois at Champaign, and Purdue University. The program is specifically oriented to address the challenges of academic administration at major research universities and to help faculty members prepare to meet them. Dr. Drake has served as president of the UI Faculty Senate during 2009-2010. Prior to that, he served one year as president elect of the UI Faculty Senate. For his third and final year, he will serve as past president and senior advisor to the new president of the UI Faculty Senate. Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Department of Prosthodontics, and Dows, became president of the organization after serving one year as president-elect. Despite a vigorous campaign to oust Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine professor Axel Ruprecht from office (a campaign that was organized and run by Dr. Ruprecht himself), he was re-elected to serve his 17 th consecutive term as secretary-treasurer. (Dr. Ruprecht asserts he was railroaded. ) Dr. William Preucil, professor emeritus in the Department of Music, was elected president-elect.

Page 2 Cathy Skotowski Presents Poster at 2010 Iowa Governor s Conference on Public Health Cathy Skotowski, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, presented a poster on April 13 at the 2010 Iowa Governor s Conference on Public Health. Her poster, Pediatric Oral Health Resources on the University of Iowa College of Dentistry s Website, was created to promote awareness of the pediatric oral health resources that are available on the Department of Pediatric Dentistry s department Web site (http:// www.dentistry.uiowa.edu/pediatric/). The department s resources include educational videos and fact sheets on various pediatric oral health topics that have been developed by faculty members and pediatric residents. (photo above): Dr. Carrie McKnight Elaine Brown, Jan Lawler, and Dr. Carrie McKnight Receive IOWA Award Dr. Carrie McKnight, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine; Elaine Brown; and Jan Lawler (both Dental Administration), have received the Improving Our Workplace Award (IOWA) for collaborating to develop and implement a new process to provide on-campus interviews. They initiated nine specific days that mixed other applicants together for a day rich in programming. Each day now includes a tour led by current students, a research presentation, lunch with faculty and staff, and the interview itself. Fifteen additional faculty and staff were engaged in the interview process to examine the questions and review the application procedure. Elaine, Jan and Dr. McKnight worked from the perspective of the student in order to provide new and better ways to interview and engage prospective students. Dr. McKnight, Elaine Brown and Jan Lawler were nominated by Associate Dean Cathy Solow. IOWA awardees are recognized for their initiative, innovation, measurable results, and/or sustaining impact. A review committee evaluates the nominations for suitability for the IOWA.

A dinner was followed by a reception honoring the faculty members of the year. There was also a senior slide show, drawings for door prizes and dancing with music provided by Rock n Thunder DJ. The master of ceremonies was Iowa American Student Dental Association (IASDA) president, Scott Anderson. For additional photos, see pages 5 and 6. Page 7 Dental Tribune Article Offers Recommendations for Reducing Dental Office Waste and Pollution An article currently published in the Dental Tribune discusses five ways dental practices can reduce waste and pollution. The Eco-Dentistry Association, to honor the 40 th annual Earth Day, wants to encourage the dentistry profession to help save the environment. The article includes a checklist of suggested practices that will help reduce dental office waste and pollution, including disposal of amalgam, environmentally-friendly biodegradable cleaners/disinfectants, reducing infection-control litter, and taking digital images rather than dental x-rays.
