2 Course description The Pediatric Integrative Master Class offers state-of-the-art education in the holistic, nonpharmacological management of common symptoms such as pain, nausea, fatigue, insomnia, depression and anxiety particularly as they are experienced by children and teens with cancer, life-limiting conditions, chronic pain, and those in palliative care or hospice situations. Participants will gain knowledge and experience with a variety of modalities including imagery, biofeedback, meditation, acupressure, aromatherapy, massage, music, storytelling and energy therapies. Additional topics will include practical discussions of ethics, legal issues, business and administrative aspects of integrative care, care coordination and self-care for the practitioner. Intended audience The Master Class is primarily designed for physicians and advanced practice nurses to develop their expertise in the field of pediatric integrative medicine. Other disciplines are welcome. ii
3 Learning objectives By the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Describe evidence-based and best practice strategies for integrative management of pain and other symptoms in children 2. Discuss the current state of pediatric integrative medicine 3. Describe the mind-body connection and its role in health and healing 4. Demonstrate the ability to practice and teach mind-body skills including diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, relaxation mental imagery, autogenics, meditation and yoga 5. Describe the role of integrative medicine in the management of acute pain 6. Discuss legal and ethical decisions related to the use of integrative strategies 7. Describe and demonstrate the use of clinical hypnosis including language, induction, deepening, hypnotic suggestions and alerting 8. Describe the functional medicine approach to the gastrointestinal system 9. Identify strategies for working with adolescents 10. Describe evidence-based use of herbs and supplements for children 11. Describe innovative approaches to procedural pain including topical anesthesia, sucrose, distraction and the Magic Glove hypnosis technique 12. Describe methods for blending integrative strategies into treatment of anxiety and depression to achieve holistic mental health care 13. Apply the principles of self-care practices to make individual lifestyle changes 14. Describe how to incorporate integrative medicine into an interdisciplinary model for the treatment of chronic/ complex pain 15. Describe the clinical use of aromatherapy including symptom management, safety and methods of administration 1
4 16. Identify new and innovative technology as aids to healing, including biofeedback and mobile apps 17. Discuss barriers and benefits to setting up an integrative medicine program, including billing, coding and reimbursement 18. Discuss the incorporation of integrative medicine into a pediatric hematology and oncology program including symptom management and counseling patients and families on the use of herbs and supplements 19. Describe pharmacological and non-pharmacological symptom management at end of life 20. Synthesize knowledge of a range of integrative options into a cohesive patient plan of care 21. Describe the use of storytelling and music in healing 22. Apply understanding of the placebo and nocebo effect to interactions with patients 23. Identify trends in philanthropy that can be applied to development of integrative medicine programs 24. Develop an individual plan for advancing integrative medicine at their institutions 2

Cancellations must be made 60 days prior to the first day of the conference in order to receive a refund minus a 10 percent administration fee. Cancellations made less than 60 days prior to the first day of the conference will not be granted a refund.
