3 THE WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY A day of education and an evening of celebration for clinical providers and patients Overview The Weight Loss Journey Education Day will focus on pre- and post-operative care of the bariatric surgical patient. The goal of this program is to provide education on some of the most common issues encountered by weight loss surgery patients and clinical providers. Topics are focused on supporting the weight loss surgery patient through diet, lifestyle and behavior modification. Audience Patients and their support persons, primary care providers, nurses and coordinators, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and dietitians. Accreditation Nurse practitioners, nurses and other health care professionals who participate in this 4.0 CEU activity may submit their Statement of Attendance to their appropriate accrediting organizations or state boards for consideration of credit. The participant is responsible for determining whether this activity meets the requirements for acceptable continuing education.

Enjoy the evening by: meeting new patients and their support persons during social hour enjoying a delicious, weight loss surgery appropriate dinner watching a short program with some fun activities dancing the night away with a live dj celebrating the journey we have chosen!
6 LEARNING OBJECTIVES Weight Gain After Surgery from a Psychological Perspective Identify common contributing factors for getting off track. Identify common consequences and responses to getting off track. Obtain a road map for getting back on track. Life and Weight Loss from a Dude s Perspective Increase understanding of the similarities and differences between the male and female perspective on obesity and weight loss surgery. Increase awareness of how men experience the social aspects of obesity, weight loss, and self-image. Keeping Weight Off Behaviors and Tools Understand information on how to utilize apps for smart phones and computer web-sites to improve nutrition and food choices. Identify two strategies for long-term weight maintenance. Culinary Boot Camp Cooking Demonstration for Basics of Nutrition and Meal Prep Understand basic cooking techniques (dry heat versus moist heat) and how to determine which cooking technique is most appropriate for a chosen meal. Identify ways to flavor and enhance meal tastes and textures. Prepare three recipes that can be easily modified to make several different meals. Post-operative Challenges: Addressing Body Image Concerns and Emotional Eating after Bariatric Surgery Learn strategies to interrupt emotional eating following bariatric surgery Understand the nature of body image concerns that patients may experience post operatively A Patient Panel Discussion Strategies for Long Term Success Define the meaning of success from a personal perspective. Comprehend and distinguish tips and tricks from those that have been there, done that. Body Contouring/Plastic Surgery Identify most common body contouring procedures after massive weight loss. Recognize outcomes of body contouring surgery. Culinary Boot Camp Cooking Demonstration for Basics of Nutrition and Meal Prep Understand basic cooking techniques (dry heat versus moist heat) and how to determine which cooking technique is most appropriate for a chosen meal. Identify ways to flavor and enhance meal tastes and textures. Prepare three recipes that can be easily modified to make several different meals.
7 Addiction Transference: What is it? Is it real? How can I avoid it? Identify risk factors for addiction transfer after weight loss surgery. Appreciate the experience of alcohol use disorder from a patient that has struggled with this issue. Chair Yoga Understand that slower progressive sequences and holding of postures brings the body and mind into balance. Explore the benefits of yoga for strength, movement flexibility and stress management. Integrative Health and Your Path to Wellness Identify integrative approaches to assist in stress management, relaxation, pain management, and creating life balance. Demonstrate a relaxation and/or meditative practice to do on your own. Protein The Building Block of Good Nutrition Describe protein composition and know expert recommendations for daily intake. State reasons for protein supplementation Body Image The Good News and The Bad News Gain a better understanding of the disconnect between perception and reality related to body image after weight loss surgery. Gain knowledge of past research, current trends and outcomes of the sleeve gastrectomy. Understand the difference between a body image problem and Body Dysmorphic Disorder Realistic expectations for your body: body shape/loose skin Tips for improving your body image Changing My Weighs Making Exercise Work for You! Identify benefits gained from regular exercise Identify components to a well balanced exercise program Participate in simple exercises that can be incorporated into a regular day Mindless to Mindful Eating Explore the external and internal cues that trigger mindless eating. Identify simple mindful eating practices that bring deep satisfaction to eating, without overeating. Bone Loss How to Make Sure Bones Stay Strong for the Long Run Identify key nutrients important for bone health Identify key elements of bone maintenance and prevention of bone loss (osteopenia).
