2 The Journey of The Armendariz Family We postponed having a child for many years while completing our educational goals, pursuing careers and other interests. When we finally had our son, Octavio, Autism was not something we knew much about or expected to encounter. Nevertheless, it was apparent from his infancy that Octavio was not developing typically. We have a family member that had a baby boy a couple of weeks after we did and he was meeting all developmental milestones such as transitioning to solid foods and beginning to walk and talk, while our son was not. Our concerns were dismissed by our first pediatrician who said we were simply overprotective older parents of an only child and there was nothing to worry about. However, by the time Octavio was two years old although he had begun to walk, he was still only saying three words and not playing with toys. That was when we made our single most important decision as parents and contacted Paso del Norte CDC s ECI Program. Within days, an ECI caseworker called us and scheduled an appointment to come to our home. When she met Octavio, she was very concerned about him being so far behind in his development and scheduled an evaluation with a speech pathologist and an educator. The educator administered the MCHAT, a screening tool for Autism. His score was cause for concern and she recommended he be evaluated by a developmental pediatrician. By the time Octavio was three years old he had been evaluated by two developmental pediatricians and a pediatric neurologist, all of whom gave the same diagnosis of moderate to severe Autism. With the help of ECI therapists, Octavio began saying words and eating solid food. After he was discharged from ECI, we immediately placed him in private speech therapy, physical and occupational therapy, as well as therapeutic horse riding. Along with private therapies, we made the decision to homeschool our son, and he has made great progress. He is now eight years old and speaks in sentences, reads, spells, does basic math, and enjoys hiking and swimming.
3 The Journey of The Armendariz Family Around the time Octavio was diagnosed we became involved in the Autism community and for the past four years we have run our Facebook group, Autism Community Network of El Paso (ACN). Through the group, we organize Films for Friends, sensory-friendly, judgement-free movie showings at the Cielo Vista Cinemark. We also work with Cielo Vista to get the word out on Caring Santa and Caring Bunny events sponsored by Autism Speaks. We also coordinate with the Westside YMCA to offer a parent-child swimming program for children with Autism and other special needs. We plan to continue to advocate for programs and services for people with Autism. Currently, there are few opportunities available for adults with Autism. We hope to see this change in the future. In addition to his career in real estate and his activity with ACN, Martin Armendariz has served on the board of the Autism Society of El Paso and is currently a board member of CDIC. Rosanna Armendariz is a stay-at-homehome-schooling mom. She frequently s and calls elected representatives to advocate for disability-related topics. We believe it s crucial for parents of children with Autism to get involved and each do their part to make this world a better place for our kids! Martin, Octavio and Rosanna Armendariz
