1 LUNG CANCER INITIATIVE OF NORTH CAROLINA CREATE HOPE TAKE ACTION END LUNG CANCER 2O13ANNUAL REPORT
2 Who We Are As the state s leading non-profit organization supporting lung cancer research and education, Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina specializes in connecting patients, survivors and loved ones with the medical and research community. Formerly the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership, our goal is to fuel medical discovery, increase survival and provide a network for hope and action for those affected. We are proud of our record of responsibility with the funds we raise, and we pledge to maintain that standard while increasing advocacy across our state. 3 FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND CHAIR Dear Friends and Supporters, As we look back on the past year, we applaud the amazing volunteers who have given so much. Thanks to you and your efforts, we are able to make a difference for those affected by lung cancer in our state. Last year was one of transition and new beginnings! After five years, we ended our partnership with the national organization in order to focus more directly here in the state of North Carolina. Your feedback and response has been overwhelmingly positive and we appreciate your on-going support. Enclosed are highlights of 2013 in both our programs and events. With your help we have been able to fund cutting edge research, educate healthcare providers and assist patients across the state. Please read on to learn more about each of these programs. Your support will become more critical as we continue to grow our advocacy efforts. To that end, we have started a fund with the Triangle Community Foundation. This fund will allow us to appropriately invest our resources and assist the organization in providing long term financial security. Please feel free to reach out to our office for more details on how you can be a part of the Lung Cancer Initiative s future. Thank you for your generosity and the gifts that you have abundantly shared to help those affected by lung cancer. Sincerely, Amy Cipau President Board of Directors Jennifer Garst, MD Chair Board of Directors
4 Program Highlights Research Since 2006 the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina has funded more than $600,000 in lung cancer research through Free to Breathe s Young Investigator Research Grant Competition. In 2013, we funded researcher Dr. Lauren Averett Byers from MD Anderson Cancer Center. She will examine resistance to chemotherapy in small cell lung cancer and test new treatments that may help to overcome resistance. She will receive $100,000 total distributed over two years. We also created an NC based research committee to implement our plans for future research funding. Education AccessTLC Our capstone program is designed to limit the progression of lung cancer prior to treatment, increase access to stage-appropriate care and increase the number of lung cancer patients enrolled in clinical trials. A total of 10 AccessTLC educational activities (including 1 enduring webcast) were conducted in North Carolina during 2013 reaching 1095 healthcare providers. At these activities, evaluations were distributed to all healthcare provider participants with 276 intended practice changes. Access Patient Access to Care The Gas Card Program began on April 1, 2013 through the vision of Tomma Hargraves, a lung cancer survivor and board member. In the first year, the program provided $50 gas cards for 130 lung cancer patients throughout North Carolina and is on track to provide 300 in In 2013, applications were sent in from 11 cancer centers from around the state. We look forward to growing our access programs in years to come, assisting patients in accessing appropriate and necessary care. The gas card has been so helpful because I m on disability and it doesn t go far. My treatments are in the next town. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you. Recipient, February 2014
5 Event Highlights Golf Classics The Inaugural NC Lung Cancer Golf Classic in Memory of Harold Morrow & Susan C. Hicks was a tremendous success! Selling out the course at Rock Barn in Conover, the Classic had 120 participants and raised nearly $45,000. The Morrows and the Hicks organized an incredible event, complete with a Chinese raffle, putting contest, hole-in-one car and much more. It was a beautiful September day and the Hickory community came together in an overwhelming show of remembrance for Harold and Susan. 5K Run, Walk & Rally The series remains strong, attracting walkers and runners around the state and raising awareness and significant funds. In its 7th year, the Raleigh 5K was as exciting and successful as ever, with over $141,000 raised for lung cancer research and education. Presented by Duke Raleigh Cancer Center, the atmosphere was festive - truly a day of hope in action as over 1,000 people came together to celebrate, remember, and move towards a better future for all lung cancer patients. The Initiative also hosted 5Ks in Charlotte & Greensboro. Evening of Hope Galas Over 200 people dressed their best and gathered at the Washington Duke Inn to take a stand against lung cancer. It was a magical night of jazz music, food, drinks, and live and silent auctions. Presented by Pfizer Oncology, the gala was an Evening of Hope indeed, and over $71,000 was raised for the fight against lung cancer. Galas and grassroot events have been instrumental to our success.
