2 Statements Mission The Oklahoma Brain Tumor Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides education, advocacy, and support for Oklahomans with primary brain tumors and their families to improve quality of life and help find a cure. OKBTF is currently working to produce a Patient Toolkit, an informative collection of brain tumor specific reading materials that address a variety of issues, such as communicating one's needs and feelings with their doctor, appropriate nutrition, and social services. OKBTF works with caregivers to address care issues and a means of dealing with the stress associated with the care of a sick loved one. The Foundation encourages families to create a team of at least five friends and family members who are willing to assume some of the day-to-day patient care responsibilities. OKBTF's Patient Navigator also works with caregivers to assess their personal needs, as well as the needs of the patient, during their entire treatment process. 3 Financial Support Services Description Category OKBTF approaches financial assistance with the belief that one should not have to worry about making a house payment, car payment and/or utility payments while simultaneously battling a brain tumor. This allows families to concentrate their physical, emotional and financial resources on conquering the disease. OKBTF provides up to $1,000 per family per year and has partnered with other state, federal and nonprofit agencies to better assist families. With each new referral, a personalized patient intake is conducted to develop a Family Needs Assessment to identify their needs and develop a plan to meet those needs. The Computer Donation Program provides computers for families undergoing brain tumor treatment, do not have a computer with internet access, and also demonstrate financial need. This program allows families to access medical information via the Internet, receive online support from family members, physicians and track the latest treatment options for brain tumors. More than anything, OKBTF strives to serve as a dedicated, effective and vocal advocate for families with brain and central nervous system tumors. The Foundation advocates for change in the way families address the disease, how doctors communicate with families and approach treatment options, the methods used by social service agencies to address the needs of families, and the knowledge of the general public regarding the devastating effects of the disease. 4 Support Groups Description Category OKBTF holds monthly support group meetings in Oklahoma City and Tulsa to bring families together to share experiences, triumphs and struggles. Families benefit from the practical knowledge of others who have experienced the same pain and obstacles. Families build lifetime friendships through these support groups and serve as valuable resources for one another. OKBTF schedules speakers who specialize in areas such as: nutrition, radiation oncology, neurosurgery and social services. The Foundation has taken great strides to improve access to support groups and trainings for families that are home-bound or hospitalized due to their illness. Online communities have been developed to stream support group meetings live, thus reaching home-bound and hospitalized patients and allowing them to continue their participation. Nancy founded the Oklahoma Brain Tumor Foundation and began the first support group specifically for brain tumor patients in the State of Oklahoma. In 1991 Nancy was appointed to a committee with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for her work as a cancer advocate. She consults and works with NCI on cancer clinical trials and issues affecting families with brain tumors. She has been sought for consultation on Patients Rights issues for grant applications submitted by the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium and most major cancer treatment centers in the United States for funding amounts reaching around $15 million. Due to her work as a patient advocate and efforts to pass legislation concerning health insurance coverage of participation in clinical trials, she was asked by the American Cancer Society to serve as their Patients Rights Advocate in support of the Patients Bill of Rights Legislation.
