2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission To save lives by promoting research, awareness and support for children and families affected by pediatric neuromuscular diseases. Background Laurian and John Scott created the Thisbe and ah Scott Foundation (formerly The Olive Branch Fund) after their 2 ½ year old daughter, Thisbe, died of a neuromuscular disease called BVVL and in the hopes of saving ah, Thisbe s baby brother, who was also diagnosed with BVVL. gene was known for BVVL and with no gene, there was no hope. Laurian and John were determined to help find the gene and that is exactly what they did. In the end, they were not able to save ah. However, a mission was created to help those families fighting similar pediatric neuromuscular diseases and to fill the holes in terms of research, awareness and support. Pediatric neuromuscular diseases are considered rare. However, as a whole, rare diseases afflict more than 35 million people in the United States alone. Many patients suffering from pediatric neuromuscular diseases do not have the research benefits and funding given to larger groups. They do not have a sense of community or hope. They are invisible to many. TNSF wants to help give a voice to those children suffering from these rare diseases and to offer programs of support to their families. Impact 1. TNSF continues to work with researcher, Kevin Eggan, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology at Harvard University. Dr. Eggan submitted for publication the First Animal Model of the Function of a Gene Implicated in BVVL. TNSF funded this research.2. TNSF began a new program of support for families in This program offers travel grants for families within our mission to attend support conferences. These conferences exist to allow families and caregivers the opportunity to create a community around their child's disease that can result in enhanced clinical care and new research directions. 3. We continue to spread awareness about these diseases through successful fundraisers, conferences and social media. Goals: To save lives and fill holes in pediatric neuromuscular diseases. To provide hope to families affected by pediatric neuromuscular diseases. To increase awareness through the use of social media, marketing and fundraisers nationwide.to educate doctors and researchers on BVVL. To continue to fund research that seeks treatments and cures.to enhance services by providing a continuum of therapies and support.to ensure stability by broadening our donor base. Needs 1. I am amazed each day by friends, family members and even strangers who share in my passion. As soon as they hear the Scott s story, they are moved to help. 4 Programs Programs Family Conferences Travel Grants Description Family conferences exist to allow families and caregivers the opportunity to create a community around their child's disease that can result in enhanced clinical care, new research directions and a sense of hope. TNSF believes that family conferences are a vital part of offering support and hope to these families while also driving research forward. TNSF was able to fund 12 families, within 2 conferences, to allow them to come together as a community.
