Around noon the meeting will be closed to the public. At 6 pm the public is invited back to the Town Hall to hear the results of these plans. Barb Fioravanti has two costumes created for the Town s Bicentennial Celebration (1976) and would like to donate them to the Town Historian. Deb Donnelly volunteered to take them to him. Barb gave her official goodbye to the Club as she and Gene are leaving this Wednesday for their new home in New Bern, NC. Summerfest Committee meeting will be after NEXT week s regular meeting. PRESENTATION President Jean presented Bob Pasquarelli with the pin tab for 37 years of Perfect Attendance! This represents a significant long run of faithful service to our Club. We all offer our thanks and congratulations, Bob!

3 PROGRAM John Brownrigg gave a perfunctory introduction to our speaker, Dr. Tim Kelly, who gave the third in a series of three talks on Eat Well, Move Well, and Think & Sleep Well. Eating and exercising properly lead to brain health and sleeping for restoration. Stress makes you stupid and fat! Sleep deprivation leads to sluggish thinking and confusion. The function of the hind brain is to control our primitive actions. The fore brain area controls creativity and fun activities. Stress is the primary cause of brain sluggishness, releasing cortisol to counteract the stress. He illustrated this with the example of the zebra who spots a lion (threat), runs to get away, and when safe, he calms down, his stress is relieved and the cortisol is no longer needed. The difference in humans is that we hold on to our stress even after the primary cause is relieved, causing a continuing release of cortisol, leading to suppressed reactions and thought processes. 90% of illness in humans is related to stress. Less exercise leads to production of more fat cells, which leads to inflammation, elevated blood pressure, and ultimately to debilatory diseases such as diabetes, digestive problems, and cancer. This is not normal aging. Think about your life: have you agreed to too many volunteer jobs? You do need down time. But most Americans look to drugs and medications to relieve the results of stress. Instead you should listen to music, indulge in activities you really like (sports, travel, reading, whatever your choice). Lack of sleep cannot be made up by sleeping in on the weekends. We are genetically required to sleep between 7 8 hours a night. Less than that allows a buildup of cortisol. Keep a regular schedule to decrease it, which will keep your immune system at a higher level. Aids to sleep are darkness in the bedroom (no TV), cool temperature, good mattress and pillow, quiet surroundings. Eat early enough to allow your body time to process digestion before going to bed. Eliminate caffeine for several hours before bedtime. Don t overdue alcohol; it puts you to sleep, but not for long, and you awake in the middle of the night. Dr. Kelly concluded with at the end of the day, make sure your WHY is bigger than your BUT. Make changes for the better, but start small, and don t try to do it all at once! Bill Whipple thanked Tim on behalf of the Club for his series of presentations, and awarded him with another Certificate of Appreciation, commenting that he has now completed three visits, and is eligible for membership!

4 HAPPY DOLLARS $ John Brownrigg: I m giving 5 Happy Dollars for the peaceful transition of government power we just witnessed, no matter who you voted for. And then it was followed by two million women around the world, gathering in various cities to peacefully express their opinions! $ Kevin Sarsfield: We went to NJ to babysit our grandson who just turned two and is learning to use words. We were helping him by saying words for him to repeat. He did well with names such as Nebraska, Minnesota, Nevada, until we gave him Schenectady, to which he replied, No way! $ David Booker: Happiness is yesterday s Patriots game! And the flea flicker! {Ed s note: Am I the only one who has no clue what you mean? And I watched that whole game!} And a second for the fact that the person arrested for setting off the fire alarm at 3:42 Sunday morning in the Steelers hotel was not the one in the police artist s picture of the suspect! $ Barb Fioravanti: I m happy for the nice people I m going to meet in my new home in NC, but there are not enough sad dollars for how much I m going to miss all of you! $ Pete Stevens: You all know why I m happy! $ Jean Hamlin: I do have a hard time with names. I had 5 kids in 7 years, and never got them straight! If I d known that lack of sleep lowered testosterone, he would have been kept awake all night! DOOR PRIZE, provided by John Brownrigg, was won by Bob Pasquarelli! Skip Patton won the extra dinner. 50/50 for $17.50 was won by Stuart Nippes who donated it to the Veterans Memorial Fund to help a vet have his name engraved on the wall. Thanks, Stu, your generosity is appreciated. PROGRESSIVE 50/50, worth $ this week, defeated Jean Hamlin s efforts to find the King of Clubs. She picked the 4 of Diamonds from the 42 remaining cards!
